When I was a kid, I watched a surfer die on the beach-- he went surfing in the morning, and somehow drowned. He was pulled from the water, and was still alive, and onlookers were doing a heroic job of giving him CPR-- it almost seemed like he was going to make it... But he didn't. He just slipped away and died.
That was nothing compared to my father's death from cancer. I'll spare everybody the details, because they're pretty awful, but if I have to listen to a fatalistic "we all die," try watching somebody die from cancer before you say it.
Will every smoker die from lung cancer? No. Will every smoker get emphysema? No. Will some smokers live to a ripe old age? Probably. Will, some non-smokers die of cancer? Sure. That doesn't negate the fact that smoking is a cause of those diseases, and that every smoker has a higher probability of contracting those diseases because of smoking.
Anyway, my earlier point was that people are free put what they want in their lungs, as long as they don't force me to breathe it as well. Second-hand smoke is a killer, and it's only a matter of courtesy for smokers to indulge their habit without endangering the health of those around them. That's what the public smoking bans are about. I suppose if smokers were considerate of those who don't wish to smoke, there wouldn't be a need for a ban in the first place.
