fairlight CMI...from the moment I heard beat Box and Moments in Love by Art of Noise I read up and found out what it was (and tha it had been making the FGTH records I'd been listening to). When I actually SEEN the thing and found out it cost as much as a very large house...hooked for life. Amazing instrument, a truly unique living silcon creature.
Partial to synclaviers too, mainly as it's the only think more idiotic than a fairlight. The CIA used to check you out before you could get one (Paul hardcastle got turned down by them because of "19" and had to go 2n hand), because it could easily run a medium sized ICBM system....and NASA used to borrow one from time to time because it was the only computer on Earth that could handle the shittle's (sic) telemetry in real time for debug work. AND, I got a mail once after raving about them, frmo a guy who buys, refits and sells them, offering me one for less than the price of 2 kidneys....but he said that half the music on TV today that you think is an orchestra is STILL a 20 yr old synclavier :)

I taped the PBS "Punk and the Perfect Beat" episode when they first aired it - and seeing all these musicians with these huge racks of electronics, and seeing people messing around with patch cables made me give an internal to the tv.
I think my first love had to be because I was reading this "Home Recording with Synthesizers" book at the library in.. 91? And being a kid into stuff like that made one weird. The photo that I feel in love with was someone like Rick Wakeman (I believe) playing this ENORMOUS patch system, with this tiny little keyboard stack under it. And all I saw was wires and buttons and pitchbenders and I said "Oh man, that looks cool".
I wish I still had access to that library. I was the only one who had ever checked out that book.

I've never named my JV90, because even tho it's my main keyboard an I use it, and there's nothing wrong with it (in fact it never ceases to knock my socks off in terms of what it can do and how cleanly it does it)...but we're just not friends, and that's important with machines as with people, we get on brilliantly but with professional detachment. :D

I remember an interview with Stewart Copeland regarding the re-recording of "Don't Stand So Close to Me." He brought his Fairlight, Sting showed up with his Synclavier, and he couldn't believe how frigging long it took them to record it, with all the futzing around.
And it's still crap compared to the original.

My *nix box is named ginger and my win2kpro box is named fred.. cos they like to dance about the network pretending not to see my files. all the other computers I have have been dessicated and lie about my floor like war casualities.they get just numbers no names.
my car's name is frank, because when he gives me trouble if I play "luck be a lady" he starts fine
keyboards all held several names: tito was the dx100, i called the triton in the store simon, there's a friend's pro 10 affectionately named pookie ... and somewhere in a closet in an abandoned storage barn there is a neglected Prommer that is ashamed of being known only as "Meaty".
there's really no logic in why i name some things.

have you tried the virtual PPG anyone? I'm still stunned they didn't do a full waveterm emulation for it, but as far as i can tell the back end editting options have many of it's functions.
Did anyone ever make a PPG talk like the Korg Wavestation eventually managed?

See, it's about having the right things in common and the right differences. Jem and I have different talents.
