I've just put a pregnant girl on a weeks probation. Yet strangely, no one has given me any grief or questioned my morals. I feel quite pleased with myself.

I'll probably get rid of her next week.

Good for you (erm, considering it was for the right reasons). We had this silly cow working here last year, she had umpteen days off sick due to her pregnancy (she wasn't even visibly pregnant at this time). She bored us all to tears about her swollen ankles, appetite, stretch marks and didn't do any proper work due to her condition.

The questions are:

1. are you the father of her unborn child? ;)
2. is she on probation because she's pregnant?
3. is the pregnancy in any way relevant to her probation?

The problem is her attendance and punctuality is poor, at best. She isnt the best at her job, far from it. She provokes the other members of staff with her constant moaning about everything. Believe it or not, she's worse than me on the moaning front!

How far pregnant is she? And has the punctuality, attendance and performance gone downhill since she became pregnant?

I had a similar situation myself a few months back, which was complicated by the fact that the pregnant colleague was a good friend. Being objective wasn't easy.

Managing people is always nasty business, but someone's got to handle it. If she's been underperforming, and is generally not kicking in her bit to the workforce, regardless of her status it's time for her to pack it in. I'm relatively sure if it'd been a guy being that stupid with it all, the result woudl be the same for you, right?

I have you possibly one uppped on this - a guy I laid off a few years back was mentally ill and he was suck at his job on the floor. Not just a poor performer, but always late, always rude to customers, and his till was always over or under.

I laid him off, he killed himself. Figures he'd do one job right.
