Stone Roses = pure class between So Young and One Love
With all the shite that happened with the court case et al, it destroyed them! the favourite argument for me is "What if?"
They coulda been fuckin mega But IMHO they threw it all away - coulda been head up arses routine - or maybe some other underlying facts - not sure meself!
Spike Island was a great idea - but when yer stuck a mile away from the fookin stage - it was a bit of a bast!
Favourite song has always been Elephant Stone 12" ( and yes Hooky produced it;) ) but all their singles and b-sides were fookin great (except for the annoying songs like simone and guernica which are the songs reversed
)

Anyone go to Glasgow Green June '90...there last ever gig prior to the "Second Coming"...in a sweaty tent, excellent, a DJ set from Harri was about all we got by way of support despite rumours that it was gonna be The Charlatans who had played The Mayfair the night before. The best night I ever had as a spotty sixteen year old.
I think the Mondays did much more to warrant further investigation than the G-Mex gig itself. They were dire that night, saved at the bell by Tart Tart and WroteFL. Don't think there was any movement down the front till then. Finsbury Park surely brought 'em to most people's attention?
Only decent thing at G-Mex 90 was Barney's attempt at 808's Magical Dream, but with his microphone too bloody low in the mix.
And it's the flares and Aztec tops that will always leave the bitter taste. Fcuking ridiculous. And those bloody 'ja' james t-shirts too. Utter w*nk. That's how I'll largely remember the Roses.
Sorry, babe, the Angels were shite. And, as for Northside. ..

can i stick my oar in now? the roses & the mondays started around the same time, both started off sounding a bit pants, the roses as goths as has been said previously (the nme had an ace picture of them from that period in a "when we were young" section once - it was hilarious) but both developed into something 1000 times better. both debuted on totp on the same show after a decade of existence (more or less) 1st came across the roses on the release of made of stone went to see them at the bristol bierkeller on the 89 tour & it was the biggest queue I have ever seen at the venue, the buzz was huge from the hype. this was around the time of she bangs the drums but before fools gold (my copy says what the worls is waiting for on the front, not fools gold, was a double A single but fg soon took over) they seemed to get progressively bigger after made of stone, each single selling more copies & getting more airplay. the gig was great, resurrection was good, the whole no encore thing miffed a bit but still.... then nothing from them for ages.
the mondays career kicked off around the same time again during the madchester era but they maintained it longer til they self destructed with the homophobic comments being one turning point, the collapse of factory & the bahamas recording sessions others.
dug albums out for both recently, both sound good to me still. wfl, 24hpp, tart tart, she bangs the drums, made of stone, fools gold - all classics. (but the mondays were never goths......)

HOWEVER ... would defo not agree that the Mondays started off sounding pants. Defo ended up like it. But didn't start like it.
Bummed came out a full year before that TOTP appearance and was, IMO, their defining moment. Squirrel had a couple of classic trax on it too - Tart Tart & Kuff Dam - and then of course spawned a title track cos the album name got so popular (I believe there's a film due out soon using the same moniker?). And, of course, Freaky Dancin' was simply superb on its day. Produced by one B.Sumner of the Order. Frankly, they went down hill with Step On and beyond and I never really believed the hype of Pills & Thrills. They'd lost it by that point.
What amazed me at Borders last week was that T Wilson is still completely sold on the idea that Ryder was a genius character, despite being the c... that brought it all crashing down. Having read the book, I'm convinced that Wilson is mad.

What I was getting at mate was that THE STONE ROSES sold a lot more copies than TECHNIQUE ultimately - cos it (TSR) hung round the charts for two years like a bad smell. And who's M Gray? Macy?? 
Hubert, RENI, the greatest drummer EVER produced by this country or just Ma*chester?
No WAY is Reni the greatest drummer ever...the most overrated drummer more like! Actually, he's confessed that he's a better GUITARIST than drummer, which is why he's given up the sticks in his new band now, preferring to strum instead, haven't you heard?
But you have to remember that John Squire showed the way for all the best guitarists in the world, even before he was born, Ian Brown is vocal coach to Placido Domingo as well as doing his own barbers shop quartet on his own, and Cressa is the head honcho at the Royal Academy for Contempory Dance. It's all a load of fucking hype and bullshit, and I am utterly amazed that there are still people out there who still genuinely believe that the Stone Roses were any good.

looks like we can't kill it off just yet then Allen... & yes, Bummed was a good album, & those tracks on squirerel g-men etc were top, but was thinking about the early appearances on antony h's central tv program. agree to differ with you on the nec appearance that we've discussed before, wasn't that familiar with bummed at the time which may have influenced it & couldnt get to the front either, was in the 1st row behind the railings which ruined the atmos for me.

I remember 1989 when the effect of New Order's Technique was waring off and I was desperate to listen something decent as all that aceeed shit was pretty shallow. I got a hold of The Stone Roses first LP and it put my faith back into music. I remember listening to the intrsumental section on "I Am The Resurrection" and thinking these guys are good! Also, who cannot like the melodies in Sally Cinnamon and All Across The Sands.
