all i'm saying is that the world is not black and white. just because you hate one Genre of music does not invalidate it.
I'd like to add to my earlier vote for Coldplay, the following: Dave Matthews Band, Madonna and the Grateful Dead.
I never understood the fascination with the Dead or the other jam bands like Widespread Panic or Phish.
Most mentioned before, but anyway...
Oasis (actually perfectly listenable, but hardly worth all the fuss for something so pedestrian and derivative) The Streets (first lp was funny, but then the joke wore off, and Mr Skinner appears to be an annoying tosser) Coldplay The Libertines/Babyshambles (boring and featuring the most annoying twat in rock) Eric Clapton (not technically a 'band' but never mind, a boring racist plonker) Bob Dylan (actually its not the man himself or his music I dislike, but his fans, all of whom seem to be middle aged former public school boys who never shut up about him)

Someone mentioning Phish reminded me of the Grateful Dead. I'll never understand that obsession. They had one, mediocre, song, and people following them all over the country for like 30 years. 
another vote for Grateful Dead... the only demographic who seems to actually love the Grateful Dead are boring to middle aged middle class to rich mainstream heterosexual white americans, and a few "deadheads" who were from rich families but become bums to "live the life"... they actually 'dance' to this boring middle-aged white guy extended "jamming"... over 30 white guy jamming bands are something to be ignored...
I don't think I've ever read a rock critic who really liked the Grateful Dead all that much either, so there isn't much of a music geek angle also ... its all just about the "lifestyle image" in the end
...U2 is just so overhyped by the media, largely because there is no else to fill that space in modern times since the music industry have changed, Bono is just so irritating anyway it is so easy to dismiss him

Anybody heard of that recent much touted band called Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah!! (or summat)?
I had the misfortune of hearing their stuff for the first time on the radio (I think it was the evening session programme) and i remembered how some music publications were wetting themselves over them in a similar way that they tipped bands like The Arcade Fire and The Magic Numbers. They were truly awful. The singer couldn't sing for a start. It really was more a case of "Cover My Ears And Scream Noooo!!"

Boulevard was on such heavy rotation last year on the radio and everywhere else that I can't stand to even think about it. Holiday was much, much better imho, and easier to take on repeat listens when it became the main song on radio from that album

Should I be embarassed that I rather like Green Day? Perhaps they aren't as omnipresent over here. Surely the Eagles can't be over-rated - on account of the fact that nobody has said anything positive about them since 1976? Which means they are in fact about correctly rated.

the first track on the album is a very weird choice, but once past that they're not bad.
