There is ONE thing I cannot stand in Britain:

Videocameras everywhere (well hugely used in Britain compared to France). Said to be for your security, feeled spied all the time. I am not the kind of doing nasty things, but I feel paranoid with all this... And if you follow Jiphy's way of thinking : if there is a camera here, then, it means that the place is not safe, for there is one... Only one option left : run away !!!

And I read on the news today that the Minister of Interior wants to add 900 cameras to the French network.

That is living in democracy ? When everyone can be followed by Police spying devices, then you live in a dictatorship...

I think the british government needs to replace hathrow with an enourmous sky scraper, something like taipei 101, but 3 times larger or something. No heathow means fewer planes in sky to crash into it (althought there would obviously still be Stanstead and Gatwick airports to service London)

I dont think that Heathrows Spanish owners would be too pleased with that one. Also who would then be in charge of losing everyones luggage?

I sat reading this thinking it was pretty funny as satire then the horrible realisation struck me that it wasn't/isn't! So...

  1. Little En-ger-landers and their right wing cohorts espousing truly offensive and idiotic racist sexist homophobic self delusional utter utter shite which has been consistently and conscientiously disproven generation after generation since at least the time Hobbes was espousing the same dismal crap sometime in the mid 17th Century.

  2. The SNP, Plaid Cymru, and Sinn Féin, they wish to take a step backwards into narrow parochialism and nationalism, and are the acceptable face, and font of, racist ideologies. Simple mind pictures for simpletons (this is NOT thought/thinking in any meaningful sense).

  3. Rich bastards pocketing millions in tax avoidance and tax evasion, while ignoramus's attack the genuine poor on measly state benefits. A vast amount of which goes unclaimed due to purposeful complexity, and social stigma. Tax avoidance/evasion costs the country far far more than benefit fraud.

  4. The idea that we have to support "our boys/troops" no matter what, even if they are killing and maiming wholly innocent civilians to line the pockets of of oil barons and their political allies. If your thick enough to join the army be seduced by the idea of killing, hell slap it into you!

  5. Thoughtlessness, avoidance of any and all critical thinking and the need for proof before belief. This applies to so many people in so many ways that it'd be tedious to try to provide a comprehensive list. But for starters it'd include those who flaunt their narrow, simple minded prejudices, behind a thin veneer of being cool and anti PC, and 99.9% of politicians, political parties, and people expressing political views. It would also include believers in ghosts, telepathy, mediums, the multitude of afterlife/s, esp, "psychic phenomena", ufo's (as extraterrestrial craft), crop circles, etc etc Ad nauseam.

Who's killing "wholly innocent civilians"?

I have never met anyone that joined because they wanted to kill someone.....

this is by far one of the assinine posts I have seen in awhile... Sort yer shit out before you post MIMX

Edel, this is stuck in my head. Help me, if you can. I respect military as professionals who are meant to do "dirty" job, i.e. keep our country safe. At the same time, I am acutely aware, that job includes killing, i.e. who joins the army/af/etc. must have inclination towards it (normally people hardly would think of killing as profession, right?).

So the readiness to kill and die must be in the mindset of a person who goes military. From this point of view it's understandable if soldiers kill innocent people (in the war, mind you), that's part of that risky job, part of nature of war, and they follow the orders.

asinine not assinine. And take a fucking look in the mirror mate!

You once accused me of "bitching and moaning" because I brought up the FACT that 5 million children die each and every year for want of clean safe drinking water, while countless billions and massive effort is spent killing wholly innocent civilians. Totally unacceptable to any sane thinking human being!

See what I mean about uncritical thinking people.

I've never met anyone (other than those of an older generation who joined up to fight fascism) who joined the armed forces who wasn't seduced by the idea of killing, or being/becoming a "hard man".

ect ect ect Ad nauseam.U.S Soldiers Kill Children In Cowardly Attack (ps link works, and it's the 2nd story if you've a reading disability).

I find it amazing how you can say this:

  1. Little En-ger-landers and their right wing cohorts espousing truly offensive and idiotic racist sexist homophobic self delusional

and then turn around and say:

I've never met anyone (other than those of an older generation who joined up to fight fascism) who joined the armed forces who wasn't seduced by the idea of killing, or being/becoming a "hard man".

Somehow you condemn absent-minded bigotry in one way, but condone it in another... make up yer mind...

and my guess is that you've never met anyone in or from the military... only watched it on tv from yer armchair.

Fck off... it easier that way...

if yer going to post a link make sure it works first, maybe? and how do those pictures show "yer boys" killing innocent civilians?

Wrong yet again!

My maternal Grandfather (whom I was extremely close to) was a Drill Sergeant, who was decorated for his part in "Market Garden", and helped liberate many towns in Holland, for which he had the eternal gratitude of many Dutchmen, and women.

His brother, my great uncle, was decorated for serving in Burma, before his capture by the Japanese and forced labour on the notorious Burma, or death railway. Where he lost most of his fingers.

My paternal Grandfather lost an arm in WW1, and as a result died before I was born. One of his sons, my uncle, was killed coming home on the last British sub the Germans sunk. His brother, my uncle (who I was also close to, and whose funeral I attended on Oct 31st) was in the RAF and served with distinction in Malta.

When I was a schoolboy most of my pals wanted to join up(partly, to escape the grinding poverty Thatcher engendered) but mostly to kill, to be perceived as a "hard man". They all wanted to be para's or marines, none wanted to join the Royal Engineers, or other more constructive branches of the armed forces. Of those who singed on 1 committed suicide, and the rest became either junkies or alcoholics. They'd boast of glue sniffing, dropping acid, taking mushrooms etc while on active service. Scary: daft wee boys out their heads while in charge of lethal weaponry.

By the way I'm no pacifist, and unlike many socialists I know, think WW2 and fascism/the Nazi's had to be fought. And I'd certainly have fought the twisted evil fucks. Thank fuck the Red Army (of the non-socialist non-communist USSR) and their tanks saved us all!

I'll leave the last word to Jake, who thankfully brought me to my senses, before I committed the same gross error.

So let me get this straight.... you knew and loved those who chose to serve to defend their country.... you also knew a couple rejects who joined for the wrong reasons... so instead of seeing that your family members are like the majority that join and see the rejects as rejects, you're going to seperate them by time periods?

I was in the Marine Corps for 10 years. I've been in charge of countless men. Granted there are those that joined to be 'bad-asses', but they are in the minority... not only that they are also ones that never really have the ability to adapt, and usually get in alot of trouble, get kicked out or at least never really advance as they just don't fit...

I will take back my insult if you at least consider revising your thought about those in uniform....

We don't 'enjoy' killing people... no one does... granted there is an image that is put forth, but it is that... and image is not reality.... why do you think there are so many cases of PTSD when soldiers come home?

and no, they are not out killing innocents....

MIMX has rapidly turned into my favourite poster. Kudos.

Back to jolly old EE-RACK. Was at a conference a week or two ago where someone was giving a paper about her experiences interviewing US Gulf veterans about their experiences in Iraq/Afghanistan. She was telling us about one guy who explained that current policy for US military personnel driving vehicles in certain sections of Iraq is to not brake if children walk into the road lest they're being used (as they have apparently been in numerous incidents) to slow down a convoy prior to an 'insurgent' attack.

He reckoned that after he'd seen the fourth or fifth infant systematically splattered all over the road he began to doubt what the US was doing in that part of the world....

Or is there no such thing as "innocent civilians"?

What these non-innocents:

I have already said proof should be a prerequisite for belief, but it also seems that when many are given absolute concrete proof, they still cling to their unfounded airy fairy belief.

Ah the famed reading disability strikes again...

MIMX wrote: I've never met anyone (other than those of an older generation who joined up to fight fascism) who joined the armed forces who wasn't seduced by the idea of killing, or being/becoming a "hard man".

They didn't join up to defend "their country" (like all members of the working class they have no country, own no land, country piles, or means of production), they joined up to fight Facism! As for my mates being "rejects" better a reject by far than an American Banker! (Or something that rhymes with it).

PS Thank you Doctor Clayhead.

PPS Shug's post reminded me to add Celtic FC and Scottish Irishmen :p (Or maybe, as someone suggested in another post, in Shug's case English Scottish Irishmen...)

That is not, sadly, something special to Britain.

And in my opinion the "rich bastards pocketing millions in tax avoidance and tax evasion" is a much more efficient Internationale than the Socialist one. But, quite curiously, there is no Containtment policy to stop them.
