Everyone does.

My grandfather, 87 years old, begins to get very old. Let's say that he reached an age when you do remember better what you did when you were 20 than what you did yesterday. Last time, he told me, crying like a child who wishes to be forgiven, what he did at the beginning of the war. The order was given to leave the port of Toulon and to head towards Genova in order to destroy Genova's Italian Fleet. When they arrived, the order was the following : "feu à volonté". They sunk most of the boats in the "most honorable art of war", but, as they still had ammunitions, they bombed everything they could, including civil targets. He told me, crying, "I ordered to bomb a civilian train steaming on a bridge and, short after the dust of the impact disappeared, I could see that nothing was remaining of the train and of the bridge." That was his first experience with war.

That is not, sadly, something special to Britain.

And in my opinion the "rich bastards pocketing millions in tax avoidance and tax evasion" is a much more efficient Internationale than the Socialist one. But, quite curiously, there is no Containtment policy to stop them.

Which non-Socialist non-Communist International are you referring too (and why)?

The 2nd? With the worst thing that ever happened to Socialism that pseudo-intellectual non-democratic murdering bastard Lenin as a member? (Although Rosa Luxembourg, one of the many who imediatley said that what was happening in Russia in 1917 had nothing to do with socialism/communism, was also a member). Or the 3rd ran by the State Capitalist USSR? (Communist/Socialist State: the definition of oxymoron). Or Trotsky's non-Socialist non-Communist 4th?

Or some other incarnation/joke of an International?

Thirded.

I remember reading FATS' post at the time and hoping some achingly funny punchline would materialise but no such luck. Just a load of hard right bile that - directly or indirectly - discriminates against anyone who is not your average, English white male.

Just a boring, xenophobic, stereotypical, deadly dull rant by yet another little Englander with a chip on his shoulder.

Well done MIMX :thumb:

But It's good to know I'm not totally wasting my time, when I'm forced into political posting.

Although it can be convincingly argued that all actions are political, unless you live in splendid isolation on a mythic desert island.

I think we've got some absolutely lovely beaches really. Some wonderful wild coast, great scenery, cliffs, dunes, caves, rock formations, wildlife, shoreline woodland, salt marshes, desolate coves, excellent internationally regarded surfing beaches, etc. Then again, I don't go to seaside looking for topless women... ;)

EdelBrock wrote: and my guess is that you've never met anyone in or from the military... only watched it on tv from yer armchair.

NOTE : This has nothing against Edel. It is just what he said that I find interesting.

Note also, that I will also try to answer to Ian about militaries.

Just like Ian, I think that a professional army has to be made of people ready to do dirty jobs like killing. This is the reason they are given weapons, right ? We can see a weapon under two different lights.

  1. Defensive weapon.
  2. Offensive weapon. What can we say ? Both are intented to kill, to defend or to attack, but the final goal is to kill.

As you may have already noticed, I am a citizen of this little arrogant country which seats at the permanent council of the United Nations. And unlike in the two Western democracies which lead our ways, National Service was a duty until 1996. Lucky as I am, I did it in 1994. My grandfather was very proud. Mind, he spent his life in the army. He has French medails (nothing special for a Frenchman), British medails (as he joined the Free French in England - still smokes Player's Navy Cut from time to time) and even an American one, yes Sir !

Well, by a morning of October, I found myself in barracks in the Alps. Burt, if you read this, the Laibach video made me laugh as I remembered how we enjoyed to sing this tune by this time... Yes, I had a weapon in my hands. Yes I did things I find rather stupid because I was wearing an uniform. Lucky as I am, I was in a High Montain Combat Company - not sexy as Marines, isn't it ? And it came a day when we were asked whether we wanted to go in Sarajevo or not. I said no. No, because as blue helmet, you have the rifle, but you cannot shoot the fascist doing his business in front of you. I say, in this case, and in this case only, I am ready to pull the trigger. Otherwise I hate guns. That is what I liked the less during this time : loving my famas like it was my wife. Bloody cunts ! As I refused, they wanted to get rid of me. But as I speak slavic languages, they could not sent me in a boring place where I could rest until the end of my duty. They sent to the Headquarters in Paris ! Bastards ! No, I am kidding, that was interesting. Like one colonel told me one day. "As you can see, we are between gentlemen here. This is not like in barracks, where most of the professionals are stupid cunts. I evaluate the amount of cunts at 80%. But we do really need them". What did I have to say ? And then he added. "When your cause is not worth it, don't think. In the army, thinking is already betraying. The only hope you've got is to serve an officer who is able to say no to an inhuman order."

And as for the military, I've worked with alot of soldiers and ex-servicemen/women. I've never met anyone who joined up to kill. The main reason cited is that they had no chance of employment on the (yes, Thatcher is to blame) run-down council estates and the armed forces looked like the only option to escape semi-poverty and learn a trade for when they'd completed their service. They came out with Engineering qualifications, Medical qualifications, Computing degrees, etc. etc. and ended up with productive civilian careers. I think it's short-sighted and unfair to paint every member of any country's armed forces as being in it for 'being a hardman/wanting to kill'. There are a few, but in my experience, MOST get weeded out during basic training and everyone undergoes psychological testing. Everyone here has made rather general statements. Most are equivalent to saying 'All Americans are stupid/All English are bowler hat wearing snobs/All Scots are illiterate thugs drinking Special Brew/All Irish are either thick or carry Armalites/All Welsh shag sheep' There are always exceptions to the rule and always those who unwittingly perpetuate the stereotypes. It's a sad fact that without having armed forces, simply due to humanity's in-built self-destruct, many more people would die as a result. There are always civilian casualties, even when an attack/defence is PROPERLY planned, rather than in panic. It's terrible and most service personnel would agree with that. I must admit that I don't know the solution to repairing what seems to be social decay - I'm not one of the sappy Guardianistas who say pat them on the head and discuss the problem over a latte, but to a certain extent, some tougher, socially responsible measures need to be put into place. I can only speak for what I've seen in the UK, but we're all human, so what works in one country MAY be effective in another. It still all comes down to honest communication.

I'll shut up now.

MIMX wrote: Which non-Socialist non-Communist International are you referring too (and why)?

I have to improve in English.

I was referring to the first one if we may say so. The Capitalist one. Unlike Socialist or Communist ones, it has not to have a leader, like the ones you were talking. No, this is more a "nowhere to be seen club", a kind of think-tank.

It promotes itself with great efficiancy since the genesis of the industrial era. It began with religion. "You shalst be honored to be son of God and exploited by someone who shares his bread with you". On this point, the French Revolution shows that it has nothing to do with political regimes. This revolution was a revolution of bourgeois for the benefit of the bourgeois. The only real revolution was la Commune. Mind, UK is by definition a Kingdom, it does not annoy capitalism. Capitalism feels home everywhere like in dictatorships, democracies, kingdoms and even in communist countries (NEP in USSR, Hungarian goulash communism and not the least PR of China). Religion is a bit out of fashion. In some emerging countries, it is seen as conservative ! Too generous in favour of the people ! Now, the banksters need another more glamourous way to promote their stuff. The self-made man, the "do it yourself", the myth of the individual superior to all the other individuals with its hall of fame published in Forbes. And even if these people seem mighty to us, they are simply the puppets of a system that evoluates permanently.

Chris, thank you for your post. I've met and trained with all the branches of US service and many other foreign countries' services. People in general are peace loving. Killing is not fun, and I've never seen anyone do it out of enjoyment. I think that stereotype comes from people that, and rightfully so, couldn't kill another human and have trouble understanding how one can do so.

On the 'babies splattered on the windshield', well I can't say that never happened as I was never there for that and I never heard any order like that. Something like that would have to be the policy of a small unit commander... that definately wouldn't be a large unit policy. The military truly is afraid of bad press, it does us no good in getting the job done. So there are extra measures and rules/regulations to ensure that bad practices don't start. Orders like that could get that unit commander in alot of trouble.

Jiphy you did make a good point. If you put 100,000 people in a country there will be a certian percentage of idiots. We do our best to weed all them out, but there are some that slip through... every profession has this percentage. I would guess this percentage is under 10%... and the unfortunate thing is that this small percentage ruin the reputation of the over 90% that do thier job professionally day in and day out.

MIMX, I had no intention of insulting your friends... I thought you were doing that yourself, so I was only in agreence... Also you have to understand war is a VERY political machine. Somethings that make the press are true, and some are politically driven. Haditha is a very difficult to understand, where truth starts and politics begins. These things aren't cut and dried, as there are high individuals that are out for people's heads and there are others trying to cover up facts... both are impeeding progress... both have their personal agendas, and both try to cover their tracks well... if we could somehow get the politics off the battlefield, so much more could be accomplished...

The Scots have always made the most effective lethal battle hardened soldiers in the British army.

Nowhere did I suggest otherwise.

Or we should learn French! I think something was lost in translation: the 1st International as capitalist? The international founded by Marx and Engels, before being overrun by anarchists.

But you made some interesting points...

Jiphy wrote: The only real revolution was la Commune

True, but bombs and bullets, does not a revolution make! Although you rightly point out that most revolutions put the capitalist class in power.

Only the democratic action of a majority make a revolution.

(Or at least a socialist/communist revolution).

It's just a means I have no time for. (Except in a very few specific cases:like stopping the Nazi's).

The Ends NEVER justify the Means. For anyone with a truly ethical outlook the means are the ends.

I reckon Jiphy meant 'capitalist' as in "Der Kapital", Marx's principal work that inspired the entire movement along with the Manifesto.

Aye, maybe. But you meant Das Kapital: and unlike most people I've actually read it. No really an enjoyable read and Marx hated writing it, he wrote to Engels about having "to wade through economic filth" in order to finish it. "The German Ideology" is a far better read.

I wasn't talking about politics in macro scale, in that case war is obviously politically driven. I am discussing politics on the a more day to day basis, on individaul actions, and specific events... specifically directed at certian individuals that are lower on the totem pole... but then I guess you already knew this and are only trying to twist my words...

and to say "The Ends NEVER justify the Means." is a completely over-simplified understanding of world politics... if that were the case, there would NEVER be a reason to go to war... to which you already stated there is...

There's good theory, and there is how the world works... and never the two seem to match... not something I like, but nothing a post on a fan-based website will ever change, now will it?

In this vein maybe you know what you meant/mean by the above post, but I'm afraid whatever point you were trying to make eludes me!

PS I've no intention of being drawn into an argument with you every time I post, so feel free to post your right wing propaganda and excuses for slaughtering innocent children for oil. (While ignoring the proof that stares you in the face).

Blimey, MIMX, I do not see how this is now adding anything whatsoever.

That is the 3rd time you've felt the need to post pictures of dead children.

Surely once was enough? I think we all get the message. You're starting to dilute your original points now.
