I wanted to keep the Oakland concert alive!

Anyone seen the Chems before? Do they just turn on their computers and put some pretty graphics on the big screen?

Really looking forward to this--hopefully New Order will have rehearsed as it is their first gig since 02.

I got tix Friday through the pre-sale. Does anyone know if it's OK to bring a camera into the venue? I don't want to lose my camera or get kicked out during the concert.

My boyfriend and I are planning on going, but we haven't bought our tickets yet.

There's prolly no hurry in getting tickets (got mine on presale friday) cos Henry Kaiser apparently fits about 7000 people--surely won't be a sell out?

Saw the Chems in 99, damn good show I must say, don't remember a lot about it except that it was really packed on the main floor and most people were happily dancing.

I know Coachella lets you bring camras but I dont know about this one?

My friend went to the Chemical Bros concert here, and he loved it. He said it was just them by their keyboards and computers with a big screen behind them showing cool stuff.

But after the show the band stayed and talked to their fans behind the stadium by their tour bus.

Maybe we can catch new order after the show?

Don't you have mobile phones in the US that take pics? You can't go to any event in the UK whether it be sport, or a concert, without everyone on their mobiles taking pictures!!!

how weird is it now to look at footage of the 316 dvd where they showed people taking photos on their phones as it was a new thing back then?

You can check tripadvisor.com for a list of hotels in Oakland, but you may want to make sure you're not staying way out near the airport (that is if you're staying on the East Bay side). I've booked a room at the Marriott Courtyard downtown, it's a little cheaper than the swanky Marriott next door but not exactly what you'd call budget accomodation. However it's within reasonable walking distance of the venue and close to a BART station, and for me convenience is more important.

I got my ticket in the mail today! I finally have a concert ticket that says New Order on it. My other ones say Coachella and Area 1 .

As for a hotel in Oakland, I just dont have time to get one. I get to San Fran at 5:30pm and I'm going straight to the concert from there. And my flight back to Palm Springs is 7:00am So it will be easier to just stay at the airport for the night.

I'm also going to th econcert straight from the airport (Oakland). And then I'm leaving for the airport to wait for my flight back.

The Theatre is located about a block away from the Oakland Unified School District Office. I saw a show there eleven years ago, and it was solid. Not my favorite place to see a band play, I would have preferred The Fillmore in SF, but it is fairly conveniantly located for BART (I think the Nearest BART Station is about 15-20 minutes walk away from the Kaiser (if I remember right, the Lake Merrit Stop)),  not too hard to find, and if you come early you can have a nice dinner in Jack London Square which is quite nearbye, or the quite famous GingerBread House (Best Cajun restaurant West of the Mississippi according to many) or quality Chinese in Oakland's China town which is right nearbye too. I'll be going with four of my friends. I hope they keep to the rumor and do dust off some old gems. I'd go completely apesh!t if they played, Age of Consent, Leave Me Alone, Thieves, Sooner than you think, anything off of Technique that isn't Round and Round or Fine Time. Damn, well, it will be the first time I've seen them since they were touring the Ghastly Republic album at the Shoreline nearly twelve years ago, damn does time fly.

The layout on the Henry Kaiser website is a bastard to read. I'm in row G4 - anyone have any idea where that will be in relation to the stage?

It is yeah. So what should I make of what it says on my ticket (Row G4 seats 278-280)? Never been to a general admission gig, is it the sooner you get in the closer you to the stage you get?

Hmm, sometimes the GA tickets list a specific section (which is irrelevent) but i've never heard of a GA ticket listing a specific seat.  But yeah, for GA shows, the sooner you get there, the closer to the stage. I like it better this way, can't stand having the seats.

Happily, my ticket for Oakland arrived in the post today.

can anyone suggest nearby decent bars (emphasis BARS not danceclubs) in oakland to get my drink on, pre-show?   Strong & cheap drinks, a good jukebox,  divey/punk atmosphere, a smoking patio, and a pool table would all be a plus.   Stuffed shirts and a prevalence of yuppies would be a minus.

Everybody I talked to who went to Oakland All agreed "Get the hell out of Oakland as soon as you can!"

Oakland is not a safe place to hang out. I was thinking of going to the Hard Rock Cafe San Fran after the show to get a shirt.

I have never been in any city but Dallas. Can I get close to the stage? I would really wish it, I got a general admission ticket.

Oakland has a bad reputation, but like much of San Francisco there has been a lot of gentrification and there are some nice areas (my husband, who used to live in there, assures me the neighborhood around Lake Merritt is cool). However, you'll probably want to head to SF, go to Chinatown, the Haight, and the Mission for sure and maybe North Beach if you are a fan of the Beats (you can still have coffee where Jack Kerouac used to hang out, at Cafe Trieste). If you're a record collector you might want to make your first stop at Amoeba Records on Haight, it's the biggest, craziest record store I've ever been to (housed in a former bowling alley). So, there's lots to do. If you wanted to stay on the East Bay side there's always Berkeley (more good record stores, lots of students, very pretty and laid back).

Well TurnJim I changed my mind, I'll be up in Oaktown for the show and then begin the mad dash down I-5 to Coachella. I already called my hotel and said "Hold the room Friday night, I'll be coming in late, very late, light sun coming up late." They said for the festival and I said "No, for New Order"....

Apparently Hernan Cattaneo, a South American DJ according to google, will be the support at Oakland. Does this mean Arthur Baker won't be there?

definitely don't stay in oakland. stay in san francisco, it is a 10 minute drive over the bay bridge to the concert venue. I suggest the Hilton San Francisco, as we can all go party after the concert if anyone is game...also if you use priceline.com you can always get a 4 star hotel in SF for around 70US dollars.

Well before the concert I'd like to take pictures of the city, because I would have about 4 hours before the concert after I'd arrive to Oakland Airport. Do they have skyscrapers or just a nice beach?

San Francisco is not known for it's beaches but there's plenty to see. The city is actually fairly small, being limited by the amount of real estate. The only growth it's experienced was when the land under the financial district was created with the rubbish from the 1906 earthquake (not the place you want to be when another one hits). That being said, 4 hours is barely enough time to scratch the surface. The skyline is interesting, with the TransAmerica building and what not, but there's nothing really huge. You'll find great food, art and shopping but if it's your first visit you'll probably want to do the touristy stuff like go to Alcatraz or ride the cable cars.

I AM PLANNING ON DRIVING UP FROM L.A., NOT IN THE MOOD TO STAND AROUND ALL DAY AT COACHELLA, DOES ANYONE FROM OAKLAND HAVE AN IDEA OF PLACES TO STAY IN THE AREA OR NEARBY? CHEERS!!!

I would suggest staying in SF as it is very close and much nicer. You can get a 4 star hotel in north beach or nob hill for 69 dollars on priceline, almost everyday. That is what I did for this little excursion.

Looking forward to this show. Doesn't seem like it's being advertised around here (the SF Bay Area). Anyone know how well tickets are selling? As far as I know it's not sold out yet, which surprises me a little.

Haven't seen NO live since 1993 (at LA's Hollywood Bowl) and am excited to see the lads (not quite a bit fatter) play again.

I've seen a show at the Kaiser Auditorium once, if I remember correctly it's got a basketball court feel to it. Lots of room to dance, especially for old geezer NO fans with tender joints.

I'm flying to OAK on 29th at 7am from Dallas. Who else is going from Dallas? My flight is 1-stop, it's cheaper and I'll be in Oakland at around 2pm.

you don't need a rental. you can take the BART from the oakland airport to the lake merritt station, which is half a mile away from the venue according to google maps (but they take a really roundabout way). i think's it's only a buck or two.

Finally made it to Burbank, getting ready to jet north for Oakland Friday a.m.

I'm wondering whether I should risk bringing my digital or just going out and picking up a sack full of disposables tomorrow morning (Hoping I can get some freebies from the photo lab I used to work at).

They better allow digitals. I have no place to put my camera if they don't allow them since I'm coming straight from the airport. My stomach has been in knots since last night in anticipation of the concert, can't wait...

You should just bring the disposables. The kaiser never lets people bring in Cameras. Of course, if you can sneak it in, then I have ever seen any taken away, but who knows. I personally do not think it is worth the risk. See everybody there. Should get there around 5.

I plan on getting to the venue by 6. That way I can pick my spot. I am not sure as to how crowded it will be but better safe than sorry. i know all of the NO fans will be well behaved, but you can never tell about fans of the Chems ;)

The suspense is killing me...ah, I see it. Interesting. had high hopes that TPK might make a welcome return, first gut feel is it's OK but not quite what it could have been. I know, picky, picky...

Highlights that immediately come to mind are:

• During a storming rendition of LWTUA, some punk with a mohawk gets throttled up to be carried by the crowd and the security make leaps to snatch him. Hooky into his microphone as the second verse begins to segue into the chorus: "DON'T LET 'EM TAKE YOU, BOY"

• Barney suffering a stroke in the middle of BLT and passing out for the instrumental portion of the song :D

More after I crawl out of the showers.

A couple of initial impressions...

--The place was fairly packed...I'd say somewhere between 5500 and 6500 people...

--Song selection ranged from fantastic SLC and Love Vigilantes (hidden track b-side remix of course ;) to the ok...Road to Ruin and Run wild...

--I don't get the fact that NO talks about how much the fans like the dancier songs and yet they really didn't play that many outside of the normal range...I personally like the variety but the crowd seemed impatient for the "hits"

--Barney was very talkative...singing the song about San Francisco "flowers in your hair" etc.

--Barney danced all over the place and it didn't look half bad...not as many whistles and whoops as you'd expect

--I was shocked by how many people knew the words to the songs from JD all the way through WFTSC

--I was proud to wear my NOOL shirt and have my 8 year old stepson next to me in his NOOL shirt as well dancing and sweating the whole time!

They didn't play Touched, they played True Faith, wondering if that was just a mis-type based on fatigue. No biggie.

I was disappointed in the sound mix, it was really botched, the vocals were a pain in the rear to hear, really distorted and out of whack. The performance was very nice, enthusiastic, even funny (I believe I recall a rip on Morrissey from Barney), terrific, my only complaints would be that #1, the sound mix (or someone else can put it more clearly who was there) was screwy and #2, nothing off my fav album, "Technique" was played. That's two New Order concerts I've been two with all of one "Technique" track being played (Round and Round). Still, it was a great gig for the most part.

Love Will Tear us Apart (best performance of night along with Temptation) Love Vigilantes Road To Ruin Temptation (particularly sterling performance) Crystal (first time ive seen live) Krafty (sounded great)

The performance was very nice, enthusiastic, even funny (I believe I recall a rip on Morrissey from Barney), terrific, my only complaints would be that #1, the sound mix (or someone else can put it more clearly who was there) was screwy and #2, nothing off my fav album, "Technique" was played. That's two New Order concerts I've been two with all of one "Technique" track being played (Round and Round). Still, it was a great gig for the most part.

Highlights:

Love Will Tear us Apart (best performance of night along with Temptation) Love Vigilantes Road To Ruin Temptation (particularly sterling performance) Crystal (first time ive seen live) Krafty (sounded great)

Disappointments: She's Lost Control (great to hear, but the sound was off) Run Wild (sounded awkward) WFTSC (my fav song of the new album did not sound very nice, mostly due to the poor sound in the Auditorium).

Nothing off Technique, only the old tired standard off PCL, no Perfect Kiss.

Anyway, was a pleasure to see them, especially for the highlights.

Here is my song by song quick review...

She's lost control...fantastic, measured and intense...crowd loved it! Barney dedicated this to Ian.

Love Vigilantes...sounded amazing...the hardcore fans were going nuts...Hooky dedicated it to "our boys in Iraq"

Regret...Crowd really starts to get into it...that song sounds as good live as any song they play.

Hey Now What You Doin'....just as the whole crowd was warming up this kind of stopped them in their tracks....maybe it was the Chem Bros fans or something but a straight ahead rock track that very few people knew was not a great pick here. The song sounded fine...not great.

Krafty...again the crowd starts to get into it and one thing that really stood out was Barney's voice...it was nicely warmed up and its by far the best version I've heard of this live...he sounded great.

Transmission..the place was JUMPING..great choice...song executed flawlessly...even the people who like dance music and had never heard it before were into it.

Touched is listed above...but they didn't play TBTHOG...unless I was unconscious for 5 mins...They played True Faith here...it was fine but they played the '94 perfecto type version which did not fit that well from the intensity of Transmission...anyway it was fine.

Run Wild...kind of a disaster. The crowd momentum was building and up...and NO sings their "prom ballad" for crimeny sakes...barney even kind of apologized for this afterward saying that it was the first time they'd played it live so don't give them any shit...Turn or As it is when it was or YSF would have been so much better of a change of pace song...no one seemed to know the song or seemed to care...it was so out of place it was like a sore thumb.

JET...song didn't translate as well live in a cavernous stadium as I would have expected. I think that after Run Wild the intent was to start picking up the pace again but noone seemed to know the song and although it is extremely catchy the crowd never really caught on.

WFTSC...sounded brilliant...but again the crowd wasn't that into it...the lineup of songs certainly needs to be switched around a bit.

BLT...crowd went nuts for this...but it wasn't their best performance of the song by a long shot...maybe I'm being picky but its like going from 0-150mph in two seconds. Anyway...its a crowd fav and everyone was dancing.

LWTUA...They had the crowd in the palm of their hand during and after this one...sounded so good live I almost peed myself...wow.

Temptation...this was the climax of the evening for me and most of the rest of the crowd...I think at one point you could hear the crowd singing it louder than barney...everyone seemed drained after this trio of songs...

Crystal...the hardcore fans loved it...they pounded through this one...those of us that still had energy were jumping up and down...nicely played...I think it would have been much better somewhere else in the set though.

BM...flat and boring. The crowd was kind of trying to get into it but never really did. I know everyone expects this song...but they should really tweak it out or do something new with it...I think that finally even the crowds are bored of it (like the band has been for 10 years)

Only one song as an encore...that sucked...would have been better to close with temptation and come back to do crystal and BM than to end with one...the crowd was kinda ho hum and walked out...not exactly the way to leave 'em wanting more. Where was PK or YSF??

one more thing...if anyone was wondering about female NO fans...there were lots and lots of 'em there...

The fact there was only one encore track was down to the strict curfew imposed by the venue. Atmosphere was also scheduled as an encore, and there might have been other tracks after Blue Monday had there been time.

I guess this setlist will get some work - it's not always easy to gauge how songs are going to go in a live setting, and the order in which they play them doesn't always gel. Must admit to being surprised at Run Wild, was hoping that this one would be consigned to the "album filler" bin.

Are we going to keep these concert reviews to the Ceremony Forum or what? It states it pretty clearly above. Otherwise this forum's going to get flooded in the next few weeks with twenty threads about each show.

More like Bernard doing his "Like A Virgin" routine. Hilarious, until he stopped moving. I thought he had a stroke for a second, and that the gig would have to be stopped to bring in the paramedics. There were quite a few medical personnel...all in tie-dye, I kid you not, like a Grateful Dead version of the "Substance Squad".

True Faith should never disappear from Set List and yes, us Americans would be disappointed with no BLT. I'm disappointed with no Ceremony, Subculture, & Round and Round. They could scrap Blue Monday.

I'm very happy to see New Order on Tuesday, but from looking at that setlist, once again it looks like a short show from them. Maybe when they come again in 15 more years, they'll play a little longer and more of what we want to hear. Oh well, I was sober in 87, 89, & 93 so I just try to remember those those shows, and thank goodness PIL was at 89 show to put on a proper concert.

As previously stated, the setlist length was dictated by the venue's curfew. The gig was still the best part of 80 minutes, and I wouldn't mind betting they have only ever played about ten gigs longer than 80 minutes, with only two or three over 90 minutes in length. Nobody's making you go!

Any bets on Run Wild staying in the setlist? Or could it have been the first and last time they played it.

I go for the last option.

I did notice on 'the other site' that DS said that Barney has twisted an ankle while performing his patented jig during BLT. DS seemed to have been backstage with the band at some point afterwards.

I agree with Stephen Smith: The sound was horrible. We sat at the balcony level towards the rear, and it was the worst sound I have ever encountered. Barney's voice sounded incredibly muddled and I had no idea what their onstage banter was about. Other than that, I am glad to say I was there. Wished they played "Turn".

And what's up with the Chemical Bros? Cool lasers but their music sounded the same after fifteen minutes and soon after became as grating as a contruction jackhammer and nails on a chalkboard. IT WAS EAR TORTURE!!!

Whew, just got back to L.A.! What a show, no longer a NEWorder concert virgin finally. I was front row center and had such an amazing time. One of the highlights for me had to be when Barney flung the pick he was using at the audience during "Temptation" and I managed to catch it. Allllmost got the second one he threw later in the set.

Had such a good time, I even sung through the lyrics of "Jetstream"

It was hilarious(or embaressing) when Barney did the motion of typing on a keyboard when he sang the "writing songs on your computer" line from "Hey Now". He did more dumb literal hand motions for a couple other songs, I forget which.

I got caught trying to sneak in my camera but I weaselled my way out of it. Didn't take any pictures though because the event staff would've been all over me.

Can't wait til tomorrow's show...

Oh yeah, I heard them sound check True Faith twice, Run Wild, Krafty, and another song I didn't recognize. One of the new ones perhaps?

He said that he hoped it wasn't as hot in Coachella or he would have to go offstage like Morrissey. It was Hooky who said "poof!" and I think he was calling Bernard, rather than Morrissey.

In defence of Run Wild, it doesn't sound as bad as I had expected it would when played live - middle eight is quite effective. Live backing vocals, or taped? Same for harmonica - it's not a melodica by the sound of it so could be sampled harmonica.

Chems Temptation intro to Star Guitar... how in the world did New Order not work this into their version? They didnt even take the time to pick out an intro piece of music this time... just walked onto the stage and tuned up and told the audience how wonderful they were... standard rocknroll wank... since the Chems already had this in their MPC, why didnt New Order start it up and come out onstage and play along to it? That sort of contemporary update is exactly what NO needs rather than to succumb to rock and roll as they are clearly doing... anyway that little bit was the only good part of the Chems set... that and the New Order sounding slow one with the girl slowly flipping in air on the video... other than that the Chems have a wonderful ability to create and manipulate sound, but no ability to DO ANYTHING with it... for a dance band, most of the house was remarkably still... is it me or is computer music where you can see those four bar chunks cycling by about as unfresh as you can get in 2005???

Good points of the New Order set;

Transmission sounded great... She's Lost Control sounded great (except for the obligatory whoops that sound so ludicrous in these songs... Ian must be cringing)... Steve's playing was wonderful and Hooky's playing was fantastic...

The more recent material was DREADFUL... I was cringing and so was everyone around me during Run Wild and Hey Now... my god next to their better work and the JD stuff in particular those songs sound APPALLING... even Krafty and Sirens were pretty awful except for their verses...

All in all its about what I expected... the old material was decent... Love Vigilantes was pretty good and BLT was wonderful as always (Hook in particular was fantastic during this one)... but the new material was truly horrific and depressing to see played live... so all in all it was an uneven evening which finished on the down side with a paint by numbers Blue Monday and then the house lights came up... no surprises, no hairs standing on the back of your neck (except for one moment near the end of BLT which always gets me)... nothing unexpected and nothing inspiring...

I look forward to seeing how the Gang Of Four sounds in comparison...

That was an awesome show. I got there very early annd arrived at the venue just as NO were doing their sound check. It took forever to open up the venue. The Chemica Brothers did a Pink Floyd show. Their music was okay, but like their fans, it was loud and obnoxious.

Of course, New Order rocked the house despite the muddy sound mix (which I initially blamed on the Chemical Brothers' excessive volume level). I was down in the fray on the arena floor. It was awesome to be able to make eye contact with Bernard and Hooky.

I agree with what the others have said here, they should have ended with LWTUA instead of BM. Bernard looks tired as all hell at the end anyway.

Overall, I had a blast! Chemical Brothers had a very tight production, almost "too perfect." Except for the parts the destroyed my ears.. :dead:

He then added that they "prefer not to talk about it." I assume, since no one here has mentioned this, that it was just my imagination or just common knowledge.

Yep. Sound was definitely muddy especially the vocal mix, I also blamed it on the set up for the Chems. I thought the Chem's were fine, particularly Block Rocking, Temptation, and the female gymnast music (when that was on the screens), but that music that long, that early, before New Order just makes your ears bleed and gives you general fatigue.

I didnt like She's Lost Control (it was the first sign that the vocal mix was off, so it was ruined for me), liked Transmission, and the general commentary is in agreement with mine, the newer material sounded weaker, although i actually thought Krafty and Road to Ruin sounded great. The other stuff didnt. No Technique material really pissed me off. I didnt need Round and Round, I would've liked something else off the album (and not Fine Time) but honestly i wouldve taken anything, rather than nothing. I thought they might play Dream Attack. Oh well. After talking about older material, it was mostly the same old, the only PCL track being of course Blue Monday.

Barney was fun and funny, the rest were great, Phil was really into it, i got the feeling Barney was actually having fun, maybe he doesn't quite mind touring as much anymore?

I think they should put blt and true faith too bed for awhile. They should also play more of their lesser know tunes.

I expect their set to be expanded when i see them in nyc. They dont have to put up with the chemical brothers.

I'm not going to lie and say that I was exactly pleased with the setlist or the stupid curfew, but anyone who thinks that wasn't worth the $40 is a mong.

We got there in time to hear them soundchecking Run Wild and True Faith. It was a long time to get in and the event staff couldn't tell me where to find a toilet. The advantage of getting there early was that we were front row and right in front of the amps on which Hooky frequently stood.

I thought the Chems were fantastic--certainly dispelled any worries that they might turn on their computers and sit back. They really got into it, and so did the crowd, although these dickhead goths tried to ruin everyones time by screaming with fake fear everytime these 'scary' clowns appeared on the screens. To be honest, I'd say the Chems were the best overall last night, though they had some notable advantages.

I found my place for the New Order show although some Yank cunt tried to stop me from getting back to my place. The atmosphere changed during the break, with the front getting more squashed and people getting more pushy.

Who thought they'd open with SLC?! Don't think it was even an option in the prediction polls. Went down well, as did Love Vigilantes. Transmission was a treat, while Temptation and Love Will Tear Us Apart were an outstanding double. The worst part of the evening was that the bass, guitars and vocals seemed to segue into each other to make one mass of noise, the sound was abysmal.

But where were the fresh additions to the setlist? Did they mean Run Wild? I didn't expect them to come out with Movement material but I thought they might want to try out some of their older ones in preparation for the summer. True Faith and BLT were boring.

Bernard literally got down on his knees and prayed during the chorus of BLT, before lying on the ground completely. Less whoops and shouts than I was expecting, and in fact Barney said "We're trying to concentrate on playing and not jump around too much, but now we're gonna do some jumping around." He also called Morrissey a poof.

The night ended really depressingly thanks to the curfew which prevented a better encore. My friend was even more pissed off when Hooky gave his pick to the person who had pushed my friend out of his spot! But all in all I am glad to say I have seen New Order. To have Hooky yards away from us was something else.

Hooky patted an event staff on the head, raising a smile from the bloke who for the rest of the evening seemed like he couldn't wait to get home. Also, Bernard kicked the mic stand down during one song, prompting a nervous roadie to dart back on and try to fix it while the song was still playing.

I am still down that they didn't play Ceremony or Atmosphere. Upsetting to think if they had more time they would have played Atmosphere.

Fantastic show, fantastic set. Being smashed up against the barrier in front and dancing to "Temptation" is the culmination of years' worth of dreaming. One thing: I wouldn't have noticed that they're getting old, except they kept reminding us that they're getting too old for this. Well, during "Bizarre Love Triangle" he got down on his knees when the lyrics said so, and it looked for a minute that he might not make it back up. That would have been awkward. Nonetheless, amazing show. I'm still buzzed.

I wish. I won't be in England till July, the same month when the lads are seemingly playing every country in Europe but ours. I considered making a jaunt for that French festival but that doesn't seem a goer, and I don't know what the situation is ticket-wise with T in the Park. It looks like I'll have to wait until the next album, but the memories of last night will do nicely.

Anyone got pics yet? DS is going to upload his over the weekend and my mate took one of Hooky on his phone which I'll try and get up here.

One more point of note, being so close to Hooky during WFTSC made me see what a great bassline it is, even though I could barely distinguish the bass from the mix. Good luck tabbing that one! (Although I'm fairly sure the 6 7 and 9 frets on the G string play central parts)

Is he playing it on the 4 or the 6? It's just the 6/7/9 fret on G pattern that changes....might sound as good on the D at 11/12/14 G 14/13, depends on what you are playing it on and hearing it through.

I'm fairly sure it wasn't as high as 14 or as low as 4 and for some sections of the song (although my memory is hazy) I thought I saw him play on both the G and D strings though I can't figure out how. Incidently I find the bassline of Krafty's instrumental interlude similar to parts of WFTSC, although as I haven't listened to the album since hearing both songs last night through the poor sound system the two songs have been meshed together in my mind!

The songs are essentially the same in construction - I've found myself playing along to one and accidentally playing the other. I'm guessing it's all G string up and down 6/7/9/14/13 on WFTSC, with some D drone at times.

I agree. I really feel that this set was partially an experiment, and one that won't be repeated in whole. I doubt they will play this exact set again. Of course the set list isn't going to be incredibly different, but I do expect the inclusion of some old classics that they haven't played since the 80's. I really have high hopes and a feeling that TPK will return.

Definitive NO to TPK, they haven't been rehearsing it and it hasn't been programmed. Sorry. More's the pity, as it is the genuine NO classic.

Did Barney's vocals sound muddled the entire time? It seemed in some instances, he looked at the teleprompter too late and mumbled some of the lyrics.

I enjoyed the show. Very guitar oriented, which sounded great. The Joy Division songs were a very unsuspected bonus too.

Did anyone else notice the sped-up "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" Kylie Minogue samples toward the end of BM? Thought it was worth mentioning here...

Have they used that sample in previous performances? I found it shockingly out of place!

I'll just say that I managed to sneak my iRiver in (What a piss-poor frisking the security did, that's Oakland for you) but I chickened out of recording as security was looming right over my shoulder for the entire performance!

Did anyone from on here manage to catch one of Hooky's drumsticks at the end? I was screaming "Hooky!" from the balconies and he did look up for a moment but he tossed it to the pit anyways .

According to Mr. Sultan on WIM, Barney actually hurt his ankle during his neurotic dance during BLT, might explain why he laid down for nearly the entire second half!

Did anyone else spot Bernard plugging his ears with his fingers during the Chems show? Having a laugh or too old for the racket? :) I pointed at him to show my mate where he was and Bernard smiled. He seemed to be having a good time. The lads seemed to really enjoy it and I have a feeling they were so angry at having to go off for the curfew that they neglected to say proper gnites and thanks yous etc.

Bloody hell, my ears are stil ringing. Just got back to Burbank after driving from Santa Cruz to LA on two hours sleep. I'll add more when I'm a bit more rested, I will say that Transmission live was brilliant, everyone around me (in front of Hooky, maybe that's why I'm still ringing) was shouting the lyrics to Love Vigilantes, a very good sign, and I saw a number of people singing the words to the songs from WFTSC, a nice sign. Hey Now and the title song from the new one were done quite well, Jetstream wasn't bad, but Run Wild was definitely given a heavy handed treatment; definitely surprised to hear it live, but I needed a breather at the time, my feet are quite sore after the thrashing around me for SLC, Love Vig, and Regret.

The Chems were fine live, but even the relatively quiet intro to Star Guitar was loud ad overdone. Ah well, can't have it all.

Ran into Jeff, Ian , Brian and his missus, Churchy and his g/f, April and her b/f, and then J. Giles and Jarvo inside. Sorry I didn't get a chance to meet others, it was a heckuva drive up from LA. Had never met him before, but I did say hello to Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads after the show, told him it was too bad the Heads weren't still making music. He just smiled and laughed.

Was it you or Jeff in the Hoops shirt near the front, Green? I was right in front of the speakers, front row, the lad in blue jeans, blue shirt (I was only reminded that blue is not Oakland's color as we parked the car) and glasses.

Hopefully they will play Run Wild in NYC... I think the audiences on the West Coast are totally different from us here on the East... I mean they don't even have pre or post parties going on out there (!)... we would appreciate the non-hits to be played in NYC, don't just want Substance for 2 hours.... rather have 1 hour of NONsubstance...

Really liked the Run Wild mp3 - cheers! I don't know why people are down on it either, well, I do. It is very different to any other NO song but it's one that has really grown on me over the years. Reminds me of 'All I want is You.

In reply to the earlier post about who caught Hooky's stick: We met Anthony from San Antonio outside after the show, he's the one that caught Hooky's stick. He claims it was because of the Kraftwork T-shirt he was wearing. My friends and I, who are in a Seattle NO tribute called Love Vigilantes, also got to briefly meet Hooky and Bernard. They were very cool and let us get pics with them. Bernard mentioned he had seen our site. How cool is that?

"Run Wild" sounded pretty good in that MP3. It's a good song, but probably one that would work better as a first encore.

By the way, is there any chance we'll ever hear the rest of that recording? ;)

Reflecting on Friday night's show...

I got a good spot at the barrier near stage right, in front of the speaker bank where Hook frequently came and played rock star. He was hilarious with his deadpan expressions and cheap "guitar god" tricks like bass-behind-the-back. I flashed the "you rock" devil-horns hand gesture, and he gave what I assume was an "I-see-you-get-the-joke" smile.

Barney kept referring to the show's location as "San Francisco" and told us to "be sure to wear some flowers in your hair." There were shouts of "Oakland, we're in Oakland!" but he obviously couldn't hear them. If Barney were to read this I'd tell him that Oakland is a distinctly different place from San Francisco and that, if you are playing anywhere in the San Francisco Bay Area other than San Francisco, say that it's great to be in <that town's name> and how are you doing tonight, <that city's name>? (To a previous poster: "San Francisco gig" means San Francisco Bay Area gig, not gig for San Francisco proper.)

Funny how, as Barney was attributing the inspiration for BLT to a love triangle involving Hook and Stephen, Stephen and Phil appeared to shut Barney the hell up by hastily starting the BLT program, which caught Barney off-guard. Also funny how he had prompters with song lyrics and chords--and that he actually used them and still messed up a couple of times.

I hope the sick guy next to me got home OK. He just leaned against the barrier with his head down and eyes closed, as if he were asleep, even as Hook was doing his thing just four feet from him (Hook was noticeably puzzled and even nudged the guy's head with the bass). Eventually the guy was fed water and later was lead away.

During the CBs' set I saw Barney discreetly darting in and out of the wing at stage right. I thought maybe he would sing on the CBs' "Out of Control" or even on their "Temptation," but no, he didn't.

The set list was great, and my only real complaint about it was that they didn't play every single damn song in their entire catalog. The JD songs were a bit obvious, but I thought "Run Wild" was a surprisingly good choice. And the newer stuff was great. Was so happy to see everyone rocking out to "Crystal," one of my all-time favorite NO songs.

It was a fantastic performance! The band were really enjoying the show and Bernard was in his joyful mood all the time. :)

The DJ and the Chems really exhausted me and others - you have to keep in mind that a great deal of people had travelled from far and without sleep and all that. I was almost sleepwalking by the middle of the Chem's set. But here come NEW ORDER!

Indeed the show started with a suprise, "She's Lost Control". Then "Love Vigilantes" which for a few first seconds I took for "Vietnam".. how could I?? And also when I saw Bernard bringing out his melodica I thought it would be for "Your Silent Face" and I thought... hm.. that's kinda too early to bring that tune.

Crystal was the most energetic song in the show - Bernard even took off the mic and just went so excited about the song. By the way I didn't feel that Bernard was heavy in the telepromters - he sang quite freely and I got the impression, by his acrobatics, that he wasn't using one. He was very natural.

The sound mix was really guitar-heavy and that added edges to regularly softener sounding songs.

By the way I managed to take pictures with my camera but I was not close enough to the stage and all the focus went on the heads before me... Plus that security concern, almost dead batteries blah blah...

I know the quality is shit but anyway here's Bernard during "Run Wild" (yes, my jaw dropped down).

The end of Blue Monday (encore) was kinda hectic - Hooky still kept trying out something out of his drum pads when the song practically was over - Steve and Phil were doing their best to put an end to the song with their sequencers. It was cool to see indeed!!!

After one song (I don't remember, in the middle of the set) Bernard thanked in French which was kinda out of place and but in a second he thanked again in English this time.

And I was really happy to see all those people coming all over the nation and overseas to the show. My special regards to two nice gentlemen, with whom I hanged around most of the day: Jeff and Alan (Green), saw Al and Mark, and the Pope and April. And other Texans: the guy from Houston who stayed at Courtyard (not Jeff), JAG from San Antonio who was lucky enough to catch Hooky's drumstick. And all punks around, ha ha

All in all a great show! And all complaints must be turned down - NO've had so much great stuff in their catalogue by now that it's really tough to choose. Grateful for the cool performance.

I think the Chems went on too long, their break wasn't for an encore but ended up feeling like an entire second set. Still really cool to hear Temptation/Star Guitar and all the other big beat hits. They're the perfect opener for NO, as long as they keep their set in check and give the headliners time to get properly set up and have time to play a full set. Both Barney and Roger Lyons were sidestage on the Philc side listening in. Roger also was the one who set up the autocues, as there's actually a pair, to the left and right of the micstand...that answers that question. And Sarge was prowling around too.

Great to meet Al and Johnny Giles as well as Jeff The Chef, Biznotic, and His Holiness. I was right against the barrier right in front of Hooky, who at one point (playfully) brushed the head of one of the security guys. We chatted up this guy after the gig, turns out he had seen the Order back in '83 at both SF (*real* SF, not Oakland) gigs. Saw some tall French-looking guy beyond the barrier taking pictures, presume that was the Sultan.

Really good set, though as others pointed out, Jetstream didn't quite have the intended effect. Run Wild was a big shock to have in the set. I'm hoping there will be similar surprises in store tonight!

Well, at least you went. So you liked nothing that wasn't either JD or Love Vigilantes. At least you enjoyed a part of it, Bernard's and Hooky's between-song quips were classic NO...maybe middling because it's the first-of-tour, but still a very pleasant, enjoyable gig. Next time (if there is a next time) try getting out front instead of standing back with your shades drawn.

I look forward to seeing how the Gang Of Four sounds in comparison...

I take back what I said about the Chemical Brothers; they're actually starting to grow on me. I was just kind of mad that they were holding up New Order. There were also a few obnoxius fans who tired to push their way in front of me.

The crowd during the NO set was a little nuts. As soon as they took the stage, I suddenly felt a wave of people behind me push toward the stage, jostiling everyone near the front of the stage. I was tossed around like a dinghy during a storm. When it was over, I realized that my pants (trousers for you U.K. folks!) had come unbuttoned in the melee!

Oakland, CA. Chemical Brothers were a giant fucking Video Game. I felt like I was in the matrix. It was cool, but overload, and boring after a while. I wanted to go out for popcorn and a piss.

New Order, on the other hand, sucked me in. It was a twangy, fuzzy, boombox beat of a show. Mister Sumner mistakenly thought he was in San Francisco, but who Fucking cares. The boys gave us Joy Division, and then some. Hooky slung that bass so low he could have plowed a field with it. He squatted at the corners of the stage, sweating on his fans, and riffing their distinctive sound.

"I'm gettin' too old for this", Sumner admitted late in the show. His belly was protruding a bit. Some sit-ups, and regular aerobic exercise, and you'll be just fine, Bernard.

The girl who got Hooky's pick had pushed my friend aside to get to the front. Not pleased to be shoved out the way, my mate was fkin livid when Hooky gave her his pick.

short story...I had the time of my life in Oakland. Jumping up and down with Johnny Giles, Jarvo, Alan and especially Rina, my girlfriend of 5 years.

First of all I am a n00by. I traveled all the way from Edmonton Alberta Canada to see this concert. This was my first NO concert and it was fantastic. I am more of a chems fan so that was my main reasoning to go to the concert. through the chems though I got into NO and have been listening to their stuff alot over the last year. I really enjoyed the both bands sets (although I sense a twinge of hostility towards the chems set on this board). Was glad to see them play some of the JD stuff at my first concert. I was standing just left of Barney about 5 feet back from the barrier during the NO set. I had the black short with a white kicking donkey on the front. I'm looking very forward to seeing them play again this summer for the sunday headline main stage at Fuji Rock Fest.

P.S. small chance in hell but did anybody else meet a girl with burnette hair who had on a red short sleeved shirt with white dots she was dragging a friend around who had black hair. Just wondering and wanting to....say thanks...

Resentment isnt the right word. Most on here like the Chems I think. But considering New Order were the main act and had to cut their encore short because of the curfew it pisses me off to think that the DJ or the Chems could have played 5-10 mins shorter and I don't think anyone would have noticed.

Me too...us West Coast NO fans are a disorganized lot...well, at least this fan is. I had to convince GaoBest to come...as he really didn't like the album too much and didn't feel like "documenting" either. There's also a coworker of mine (his first gig was Loughborough U. in '86) who went that I didn't have a chance to meet there!

Re: Chems and the clock

I looked at the schedule posted before the show by the promoter (It was taped onto one of the audio racks), it showed the schedules for all the acts

(DJ): 7:00-8:00 Chemical Brothers: 8:00-9:30 New Order 10:00-11:30

I looked at my clock before each act ended and/or started, and the Chemical Brothers started EXACTLY on time, and finished no more than 1 minute late. New Order started EXACTLY on time, and finished EXACTLY on time.

They (the Chems) didn't 'eat up' New Order's time onstage. The evening went exactly as planned. If Barney hadnt been singing about 'San Francisco' (twice), perhaps we could have heard Atmosphere.

Top notch show, anyway.

• white shirt with an orange "No" on the cover, the 4 u.s. tour dates on the back.
• same shirt in black with white writing (these were all gone at the end of the show, dammit!)
• same old green "ceremony" shirt
• same old blue "true faith" shirt

I should make it known I was there as well. I met Tristen, pope, Andy, Johny Giles, Al Jarvis and the rest of the Britts.

I got as close as 4th row, but was unable to stand all the pushing and got bumped to about the 10th row. (Thanks to the Britts )

Chemical Brother were to long. They should have left the stage after Temptation.

Oakland is a very scary city, I'm suprised nobody got killed. And I'm suprised my car was still there after the show

Had a great time and I bought the white No shirt, met alot of great people!
