well said. I mean who besides this board/fans actually rates New Order songs. OK, maybe the band. Like Tim, I've never understood the infatuation with Vanishing Point. It's probably my least favorite track on Technique. I also think the band overestimates the inclusuion of tbthog in their live set. dull as shit in my opinion.

It made no.4 here in the UK so, sorry, but most people from my/your generation can indeed whistle along to it.
It was a minor hit from memory. It didn't do anywhere near as well as it should have, of for that matter BLT which got to no 5, and is the Order's best placing in OZ. The trouble with most of NO's so called hit songs is that they were so song ago. People who are not dedicated fans have simply forgotten those songs. I think it would be fair to say that 95% of the OZ population have no idea of who New Order are and of the remaining 5%, 3% think New Order are some overdated wankoid electo/disco outfit. Not my opinion by the way.

Interesting to note that BLT made no.5 in Oz. I never knew that. It was one of New Order's flops over here, making maybe no.60 or something.
I don't agree with that theory, regarding population. New Order are still huge over here. Our population is only, what, twice? two and a half times? the size of yours but the number of New Order fans goes off the scale in comparison. They've had a no.1 single here, and four further singles which went top 5. Even the likes of Ceremony, EGG and Temptation all went top 40. New Order are an institution here, part of the nation's psyche. And that increased exposure breeds a different kind of 'fan' too. Less melodrama and theory, more realism and grit.

I hated this song when I first heard, just cos I thought it was an attempt to jump on the bandwagon. They played this on Reportage over footage of Hooky and SWR sitting in the Hac and I just assumed it was another acid track. Then Peel played it late one night and I was gutted, to say the least. Was concerned that Republic would be one long acid track too - Barney had already said in the NME that Dream Attack was an 'Acoustic E song'. I don't think a lot of people here like Fine Time, cos I doubt a lot of people here are 'that' into dance music as a rule, and a lot won't have taken the song in the context it was meant, first hearing it years later when the sound itself was dated. Same with Confusion: New Order gave their own spin on Electro as it was breaking ('scuse pun) in 1983, then did the same with Fine Time and Acid House in 1988. Only problem for me really was that other people were doing Electro and Acid House sooo much better at the time, so New Order shouldn't have tried to compete and stuck to what they knew best. Having said that, with hindsight in mind you can appreciate, musically, what they were trying to do.
I always thought Fine Time was at least 50% piss-take anyway, and the fact that it kicks of "Technique" is just wonderful - it sounds so out of place its untrue.
And re: a message further up the board - the (wo)man who is tired of 'Temptation' is tired of life!!!
The whole Confusion/TLU phase sounds to me like they had just ran out of ideas after PCL - I can never understand why people like those 2. Confusion in particular is just a mess, it sounds totally dated with every early 80s dance cliche possible thrown in. The resulting beast just lies on its back and twitches its many legs aimlessly in the air, devoid of energy and impetus.

"Thieves Like Us" is perfect, surely?!?!?! Though 'Confusion' never made any sense to me until Reading '98, when just about everything seemed to make sense.....
Good to see we have Spacemen 3 fans in our midst, though!
'Touched By The Hand Of God' is overrated and seems to be a popular song among casual NO listeners, more than once in a CD store I've heard people raving about this song but they didn't know who the artist was, I think they just saw the 'Bon Jovi' wigged video on MTV and thought it was cool. I think they'd obviously be blown away by other much better NO stuff if they'd bothered to find out more about the band...

Is that really a slur though? It was written 20 years ago and was a song 'of its time' rather than built for the longevity of something like Blue Monday, so it's bound to sound dated. It was fairly ground-breaking at the time, what with the oncoming advent of Electro. However, it was superceded by about 2 months by an infinitely more populist track called A.E.I.O.U by Freeez, which left it in the shadows somewhat. Think you can get a mix of the 2 songs combined somewhere? I shall have a look on Soulseek later!

Point taken, New Order unfortunately aren't a national institution in Oz. There certainly was a lack of exposure for the last 10 years over here. Last year's tour may have helped things, but I haven't seen much improvement in their popularity, other than that BLT is played every now and again as a 80s flashback on commercial radio.
I do have a Q magazine where it states something like NO must be thanking their lucky stars for their 3000 loyal fans in the UK, after GetReady quickly slipped in the charts after its first week, so perhaps even in the UK they aren't as popular as they used to be.

Our population is about 18 million at present, that makes it about a third of the UK if my figures are anywhere near right.
I looked at that Q magazine again. It looks like I was wrong at least about the UK. GetReady got to no 6 and sold something like 33000 in its first few weeks. That's quite good for the Order.
