Sunrise reminds me of one of their works in progress with Bernard's free flowing and often random lyrics. Somehow these lyrics or most of them made it to the studio. My thoughts are that its either about a woman or God.
She said it goes up down up down in and out in and out.
I think it's one of the more personal songs he's written, and am pretty sure that it hasn't been played in the last 14 years because of this - Bernard became very touchy about invasions of privacy (and quite rightly so) after the music press helped wreck his marriage, and this song was one of the more translucent of personal lyrics.

They caught him shagging a groupie on an American tour and reported it.

You'll be there a long time then. I don't know the facts, and won't be a part of rumour and gossip. All I know is that Smash Hits made some sarcy comments about two groupies and Barney, and the shit hit the fan.

Someone was bound to say it...

I thought STYT was about that.

ah, and thanks to "grampa benny" for the story. now i can go to sleep! ;)
I love the bitterness that is so clearly evident in the lyric on this one. Plus the music is a force to be reckoned with! ![]()
I always thought Sunrise was one of the rare songs where Bernard was attempting to say something. I'd thought it was religious, and unlike most people here I'm religious, so I should know, people more respected than me here say it's about a father-son relationship which I couldn't possibly know anything about. Any evidence on that or was that just guessing ?

I can really see where you are coming from with this. I think Bernard certainly has some issues with his own faith (or lack of), as there are a number of references in several songs. Like with so many of the songs where he is trying to say something though, there are two levels designed to make it deliberately ambiguous, so I'd suspect the father/son issue is also relevant. I'm going through the lyrics now in my head, and it could indeed be a direct message to God or to someone who is held in a similar distanced esteem.
