I realised that as I posted it, but I thought a certain artistic license would be permitted in order that my post would scan a little better.

I don't recall having focused on a monster on track 2; but the more monsters the better, certainly. I think it's probably more of an aesthetic achievement if they faked it.

It's not any background sound, it's the sound of the main melody in that time period.

There's a strange sound underneath the bells - it sounds like an electronic birdsong. It could just be these headphones failing to cope with the bass in the drum, but could also be electronically replicated birdsong.
In keeping with the nautical theme of the album, I am drawn to theorise that this is symbolic of the call of the albatross.
Let's be careful with this. We don't want Coleridge to muscle in on all the good work that has been done with the Greeks. It's a beautiful piece though, a quick read wouldn't do any of us any harm.
