i stand by my earlier assertion that i really do love Cuckoo. and am still amused at the sheer number of glaring typographical errors in the liner notes to Open Day at the Hate Fest...

And thanks for the Curve links - I know the site - I click into it quite frequently actually - don't you think those ambient sound buttons are cool? I love them to bits - I keep playing them like some kid who's just discovered the novelty of it all!!! I did notice, Kimberly, that you curiously added a top-ten element to the mix, indicating that you (1) have confused the "top-ten albums" and "good debut albums" threads; or (2) harbor a compulsive need for order and hierarchy.

It is that compulsive need for order and hieracrchy-I have to have an even #'s of things-not odd ones! When I was thinking of the list only 10 came to mind at the time! Nowhere just rules! Are you a Bob Mould fan? I just love his solo albums! Do you like SUGAR too? I would like to hear your input on Bob Mould and SUGAR! Then again maybe we shouldn't talk about other music artists, I wouldn't want anyone to frown at me :( ;);)

I think that might be me by default. Shug was setting up shop as a therapist but didn't pass the licensure exam because he went drinking and watching footie instead.

And considering that I am in industrial/organizational psychology and not clinical or counseling the best I can say is make sure your list is job-related. That'll be 200 dollars for the consultation.

Haven't you read the admin rules yet? You must be a Bob Mould fan to post here...although there recently was a thread suggesting that Grant Hart was the musical genius.

Fun Bob memory...seeing Husker Du (on TV) perform in a Minneapolis park first thing in the morning for the Today show, Bob then interviewed by :\puke: Bryant Gumble.

Just last weekend I saw Bob's new solo record in the racks but left it there...I'll have to hear something first, though...apparently Bob isn't in my "buy regardless" category.

I saw Bob on the Workbook tour, the Black Sheets of Rain tour -- with opening act Ultra Vivid Scene , and on the Bob Mould tour in Philly -- by that time it was a solo acoustic gig. I also saw Sugar come through town twice in between.

Of course, all of this is back when I used to leave my house and stay up past 8 p.m.

By the way, Bob's guitar playing on Fuel is an absolute rip-off of Kevin Shields of MBV, who worked on the Primal Scream record XTRMNTR, which also featured a guest spot by Bernard Sumner of New Order.

bout time someone mentioned the pixies on this thread - though are we counting c'mon pilgrim the mini lp as the debut or not? s'pose on cd its surfer rosa so that gets round it.

I'm always happy to mention the Pixies; however, I wasn't sure how to work them into this thread. In the states, how did it go? There was the Come On Pilgrim mini-LP; then Surfer Rosa; then (?) Doolittle; then (?), for a brief glorious time, Come On Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa on one CD; then Bossanova; then Come On Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa, sadly split up again on two separate CDs; then Tompe Le Monde? I don't know exactly.

That combo CD was a beautiful thing...if that counted as a debut album, then hell yes...amazing debut. Best of all time in any genre or universe.

Did I mention that I saw the Pixies at Peabody's in Cleveland with special opening act...The Happy Mondays?

That was a freaking disaster. As soon as the Mondays hit the start button on the drum machine, it was all over with that crowd. Oh man...such ugliness.

Janni, you know if you go to Curve's Website that you can send in to get the corrected liner notes on not sure which album(never paid attention-GIFT or ODATHF?) Anyways they said whoever printed it screwed it up and wasn't caught till after it was released. They posted on the site to let them know if you need a new one! Just thought I would share that with anyone who noticed The screw up and would like the correct liner notes! :)

i think a lot of stuff on it is good, but i don't think it's nearly as cohesive as any of their other proper records. then again, that's to be expected...it *is* meant as just an odd collection of rare stuff, after all.

song-by-song, i'd say that yes, some of it does indeed hold up to their best stuff.

and as always, when Curve is on, they are DEAD on.

that really is SP's best album, i think. one of the best things that the Pumpkins ever did was to remaster it when they got a bit of money...

i never quite kept them straight, either...so i couldn't really have put them into this thread. a lot of Pixies stuff is certainly worthwhile...damn, sometimes i really miss them a lot. Doolittle is one of my favourite albums ever...i have very fond memories of that and summer road trips. and sitting out on my sister's front porch in scorching heat with lemonade and/or iced tea and having nothing better to do than force any and all passerby to partake of the Pixies... :D

wow, Kim! thanks for that info! it would have to be ODatHF simply cos Gift hasn't got any proper liner notes...in fact, the inside of the slipcase tells you to go to their website for lyrics. so nothing there to screw up!

again(I love the little waving guy) Yes, I am a huge fan of Jawbox. They did an awrsome cover of "Something Must Break" off of GRIPPE. I actually used to be friends/pen pal buddies with the lead singer J. Robbins. We knew some of the same people when I lived in Okinawa! I haven't talked to him in a few years.:( He is such a wonderful guy to talk to. He and I talked music all the time. He and the band really liked JD so they did a JD cover. All I have to say is that you really should check out some of their albums. All of them are really AMAZING. They were one of my favorite bands to see live too. I have pics that I took of them :) I for some reason think J. Robbins is just one of the sexiest men alive!;););) Let me know when you finally listen to them! J.'s new band is called Burning Airlines and they are quite good too! Okay, I must shut up. When I get on one of my favorite bands, I just keep rambling!:) It is a sad shame that they broke up:(

I love SP's Gish album too. I wasn't sure how I would feel about ADORE when it came it, but I really like that album too!

afaik c'mon pilgrim has always been on the surfer rosa cd over here & not sure if c'mon pilgrim was import only. poss the only debut album to have two versions of the same song that weren't remixes?
