not entirely unexpected but still gutting...The thing about Tony was that he was always sincere and could always be relied upon to be sardonic and witty and always dead right on everything, he was the apex of good taste.

This was a man who consistently defended the cause of Manchester and its music without ever jumping on a bandwagon.

Fookin great that he got a decent tribute on the BBC news and on newsnight who gave it the attention it deserved.

Tony, I will treasure you in my heart forever.

Something just told me to flick over to BBC2 Newsnight and I don't normally watch Newsnight. Saw Morley and then Morris on screen behind and immediately realised. Feels like I've been kicked in the heart. Angry & upset at how so many people involved in the JD/NO story are exiting early. Earthquake in Manchester today - you just couldn't make that up could you ?

Thanks, Tony.

People like Tony only come along once in a lifetime. The world is a sadder place now he is gone.

Just got home and seen Chrissy's message on MySpace.Shocked and upset. I shouldn't be shocked,he looked fucking ill the last photo I saw of him with Leonard Cohen,I hardly recognised him. But I honestly thought we would see him around a lot longer. Recently read the book accompanyment to 24 Hour Party People,a great testament to his wit,and very funny read. If you haven't read it yet....you should read more. Nothing else to say but Tony, you'll be sorely missed. Too big for death.

Or see the whole BBC Newsnight tribute thingy via here I think:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/player/nol/newsid\_4670000/newsid\_4679900/4679986.stm?bw=bb&mp=rm&nol\_storyid=4679986&news=

and start at around 19 minutes and 43 seconds.

oh and BTW, Tony Wilson did everything and more that we all wanted to do and taught me that if you believe in something enough you might just do it.

Favourite memory ('tho possibly made up, can't remember now too much alcohol) is G-Mex crowd chanting 'Wilson is a wanker la la la' during Festival of the 10th Summer gig in '86 + the Hacienda.

Tony Wilson, top man, top twat RIP.

Terrible news...all the best to his family and everyone who cared about him.

I said that I wouldn't be back after members of NO had been making fools of themselves recently, but, as I'm sure you will all agree this isn't the time for that stuff.

Cheers mate, a true one-off.

Rest in peace. Thanks to the great Manchester music you stood behind, I've had a lot of moments. And I still believe the tape 'Punk' (taken basically off 'So It Goes') is the best musical document of the late 70s (shame it's never released on DVD).

talk about misdirection....fighting cancer, killed by a heart attack. ....something that could very easily happen to me, with my family history.

This is so sad....

it wasn't so long ago that he was diagnosed with cancer....and it took him already...

Tony Wilson, to me, epitomized the power of the individual...how one man...through his own pure will, intelligence, and integrity, could change and affect so much.

Well I did meet him and I was lucky.

He was lovely to us in Glasgow.

He didn't have to be but he was.

Poor Tony.

Rest in peace Tony. Have a pint tonight up there for us.

You weren't a twat to us.

We miss you. :(

R.I.P Tony Wilson...legend...changed everyone in the U.K.'s life, even if they don't know it.

So strange too....like some of your others had a feeling today. Was at work and thinking about a gig I have coming up, and dedicating Love Will Tear Us Apart to Ian, Martin, Rob and John Peel, and to Tony too because of his illness...then thought about Control and had a vision that R.I.P Tony Wilson would come up on the credits. And then I get home, just 2 hours later, and found this out. I'm stunned, and also a little freaked too.

Really really sad news about Tony..... and a part of me is a bit pissed off about the NHS not providing him with the necessary treatment that he needed just to at least give him a bit longer. Bastards. I hope they have this now forever on their conscience - considering how bands and friends were clubbing together to try and raise some cash to buy the treatment for him. This is just so tragic. He will definitely be missed - a real spokesman and key figure in music and broadcasting. can't say any more than that. Yet another reason why New Order should just grow the fuck up and quit this pathetic "split" spat that is going on I guess..... :(

Hello from Kansas, USA.

Very sad. I saw a video of him awhile back, I think he and Mrs. were at Bonaroo. He looked bad, but not like he was gonna die.

Thank you Tony, for all the amazing music and times you've brought into my life.

I also got one of my very favorite quotes from him, courtesty of 24 Hour Party People:

"It is my belief that History is a wheel Inconsistency is my very essence, says the wheel. Rise up on my spoke if you like, but don't complain when you're cast back down in the depths. Good times pass away, but then so do the bad.

Mutability is our tragedy, but it's also our hope. The worst of times, like the best, are always passing away. . . ."

Hope to see you at the Hacienda in the sky when my time is up...
