Since you asked nicely, to my ears, Retro sounds great. Again, a case of Rhino doing the best it can with what it has. Do I think it's the best box set ever? No. But when I look at what Rhino has done remaster wise I sing praises to them. They can't be blamed for releasing what they are given to release!

Am I the only one to regret that the extended version of Love Vigilantes (hidden track on Retro disc 5) isn't included in the bonus disc of low Life?

Ofcourse there are plenty of beats in BM, but that's also the case for the other songs. The main complaint about BM is that there is a serious volume dropping on one channel in ALL of the CD releases since Substance 1987 and I'm afraid this time will be no different.

I think the 24 Hour Party People soundtrack actually had a remastered version of BM without the missing beat or drop out. I'm currently at work, so won't be able to check till later.

I also remember there being a 12" mix of She's Lost Control that was the same as the one on Substance, but it didn't fade out at the end. It was different than the one on Heart and Soul and had the synth medoly that kicks in earlier.

if you knew anything about kraftwerk, you wouldn't be asking

they were never about the mixes.. so that's why its just album tracks...

their whole existence is based on minimalism, hence nothing unnecessary, and nothing extra..

that's exactly why the boxset is nearly perfect, and why i would give it a 99%... yeah if they had managed to actually release something with all the other stuff, then i would be more critical..(maybe)..

name a single essential krafwerk 12",

there isn't except for 'tour de france', and they've already reworked it, and put it on the last disc 'tour de france soundtrack'..

that's why they don't need to bundle all that extra stuff with it, and that's why their boxset works...[this applies to other bands, that have limited catalogs too... i only mentioned kraftwerk because they're my favorite band]...

Yup, just listened to the 24 Hour Party People soundtrack and it's fully remastered with the beginning beat intact and no drop out.

However, the 12" of SLC is the same version from Substance that fades out, only for some reason it sounds slightly different due to the remastering.

Only on the box set Heart & Soul you get the complete 12" version of She's Lost Control. It's about half a minute longer and has a pretty 'cold' ending which I think is cool for the song.

you did not address my point about naming a critical 12" by them, if it was critical, they 'MIGHT' have decided to include it on the promo, but since they don't have any (again, i mentioned 'tour de france', but it WAS included)...

there is no contradiction, EVERY other band mentioned previously here by people, had CRITICAL 12" singles released : ie : Blue Monday for new order, etc..

i could have picked boxsets by :

the eagles the police steely dan/donald fagen fleetwood mac genesis rolling stones beatles etc...

and the same criteria would have applied... (and yes, i own a lot of those also)...

they don't need a ton of mixes (if they have any), rare tracks/b-sides, or whatever, because they don't need too..

the albums REPRESENT THEIR CANONICAL OUTPUT, and is more than sufficient for their fans...

ok, i'll try answering it again, being a little more specific....YOU seem to be ignoring my point, as i tried to explain, that kraftwerk IS NOT, i repeat, NOT about mixes....thats why, for them, just putting album tracks represents the purest canonical form of representing their output...which goes with the kraftwerk aesthetic, (much like the early Factory releases for 'new order')..

'the mix', was their answer to a 'live' album release, and contains 'reworks' of original songs, and is NOT included in the PROMO boxset, because it is NOT part of their absolute 'canon' of songs... sorry for the essay, but i think i need to post this also to explain..from wikipedia.............

The Mix is a 1991 album by Kraftwerk. It featured newly arranged, re-recorded versions of a selection of songs which had originally appeared on the albums Autobahn through Electric Café. Hütter stated in interviews that he regarded The Mix as a type of live album, as it captured the results of the band's continual digital improvisations in their Kling Klang studio. When, subsequent to the album's release, Kraftwerk made their return to performing live in concert, many songs featured on their set list were heavily rearranged in a similar fashion to what appears on the album.

Stated reasons from the group explaining the release include: The group didn't want to release a traditional "Greatest Hits" or "Best of" collection.

At the time, the band were in the process of reconfiguring their Kling Klang studio from analog to digital recording technology; integrating MIDI into their setup and creating sound archives from their original master tapes that were stored onto computers. This proved to be an ongoing task, as new upgrades and equipment were continually made available in the years following the album project.

Despite no new, original recorded material or live tours outside of Europe, Ralf Hütter didn't want Kraftwerk to appear defunct to the public.

as far as 'tour de france soundtracks' goes, it IS CANON, because it contains NEW material...yes, it has a few versions of 'tour de france' on it, but its no different than the following....

I think (like Depeche Mode did), the remasters will appear in both single (album) disc versions and Collectors Editions.

It could be that the single discs will appear a few weeks later or so.

Anyway, as a single disc or as a Collectors Edition: I don't need them. :)

yes, you might, but i would argue the German 12" of 'computerwelt' extended, is a piece of musical history, whereas anything later was not... and since they released some of the 'tour de france' 12" mixes on cd-single, there was no need to include any of those either..
