It has less to do with peak levels and more to do with overall warmth and clarity of sound. He can explain it better than I can, but I'm able to hear the difference.

...OK thanks. My reason for asking for the peak levels is so I can ascertain if the mastering is in indeed different between the box and the Factory UK discs. Once I am sure there are mastering differences then I will be more willing to stump up the dosh for this set.
I just realized there is a typo on the CD label (Rushnet, not Rushent). I'm not going to reupload the entire zip file, but I put a link in the entry for the fixed one.
Once again, if only record labels cared so much about music and its accurate presentation as a product.

You're free to make up your own mind, but everyone involved in Recycle will tell you the Japanese discs sound better. Unfortunately I can't elaborate further without giving away some details, but listen to one of the Recycle tracks alongside your own CD pressing and hear the difference for yourself.

Agreed. From a quick read of that thread the implication made towards the end that the Japanese box set is only being name checked as the best source of the audio "just to make the blog more interesting" is a bit eyebrow-raising. Why would the people over at Recycle give a toss about that sort of thing?

We don't HAVE to make it more interesting, believe me. We've gotten tons of positive feedback that what we're doing is providing a valuable service, and with the artwork and anecdotes it's not like we're just plunking MP3s down for the taking.

Fair enough - the comment about Recycle was a cheap shot. £50 Note is after all doing a great job.
Just trying to ascertain if the Jap box is indeed the best sounding version of the Joy Division material on CD - that's all.
If I ever track down a copy of the Jap box it is likely to be very expensive. I like to do a little research before laying down a load of dosh. It looks like there is a difference of opinion on the sound quality of this set. However, if I ever find a cheaper copy I may have a punt.
Things could get interesting when it comes to the single version of "She's Lost Control". Both the Japanese "Substance" and CD single versions have the fadeout mix, but the UK version of "Substance" has the different more complete mix. Will both be used? (Not to mention the dutch test pressing with the extra syndrums or the Italian 4th mix that may or may not exist.....)
