ALERT: friend calls NO 'wanky'

one of my friends started up the perpetual north/south debate via e-mail and explained that southern england was better because it produced better bands, such as radiohead, pink floyd and queen. from the north, along with the 'highly over-rated beatles', one of his examples of a crap band was 'wanky' new order.

so, if anyone meets GARETH STRACHAN from BEDFORDSHIRE at some point in the near future, give him a good smack on the head for me, as i'm too far away to do it right now. just don't hurt him too bad, as deep down he is a really nice guy.

Jeff, ed, etc...let's try to get along...i have lived in the north and the south and from my experience, what Ed said does have a lot of truth...you cannot go to a concert or bar without hearing Freebird coming from the jukebox or some assholes mouth...In louisiana I was considered a FAGGOT just for listening to NewOrder. That attitude is still rampant down there and that's why I will not return...the culture in the south is YEARS behind the culture on either coast of the US. I never want to be in the south again and i suggest those of you stuck in "the south shall rise again" mentality get out a bit and check out how the rest of the world operates. Since i've been out of louisiana i have not seen any David Duke (kkk politician in Louisiana) stickers, no rebel flags, no 'South shall rise again' paraphanelia and i do not need a Wal Mart to do my shopping....

His convictions are a matter of public record, as is the additional college era arrest for stealing from a hotel (no conviction on that one though as far as I can tell). His evasive answers on the drug questions from the time of the 2000 campaign are well documented, as are his outright lies about his draft evasion and the drunken driving incident (he had previously stated that he had never been arrested, and after it was reported by the ultra conservative Fox News, he said he had simply paid his fine and that there were no court proceedings, which is another lie, records have since been released documenting his appearance in court).

I'm not sure if you are aware of the nature of mid term elections in the United States, but a Republican president has not picked up seats in both Houses since Teddy Roosevelt. Oh yeah, speaking of governorships, the Republicans picked up Georgia for the first time since Reconstruction.

While the country was at war, with a draft in place, W had strings pulled to get him into the Texas Air National Guard, despite a year and a half waiting list which he didn't have to bother with, and a pilot aptitude test score of 25%. The head of the Air National Guard at that time was Gen. James Rose, who later stated "I got that Republican congressman's son from Houston into the Guard." After basic training he was given a 'direct appointment', bypassing the difficult and generally required Officer Candidate School, immediately making him an officer and getting him into flight training, which is also usually competitive and difficult. This was all highly unusual because Bush had no special skills, experience or qualifications; the historian for the Guard, Tom Hail, was asked about it later and said "I've never heard of that. Generally they did that for doctors only, mostly because we needed extra flight surgeons." Bush's flight training was exclusively on a plane which was about to be phased out of the military, ensuring he would have no chance of actually encountering any combat. He flew the F-102; shortly after his training was completed, all overseas F-102 units were shut down. I'm neither anonymous nor your friend. I didn't pull the quotes from a single source, all the quotes are attributed to those who said them, while several of the other sources of info are named in my post. If you want more info, I suggest doing a Google search or going to your public library (you know, the one that W cut the funding for by 28%).

My opinion is that the Vietnam war was so unpopular and so easy to avoid for those with the means that nobody really blames anyone for not going. That's pretty much the way I feel too, I'm bashing Bush for being a hypocrite about it, and for lying about his record, obstructing the truth and attacking anyone who brings it up, not for avoiding Vietnam. It is a basic truth that the 'haves' will exploit the 'have nots' and use their power to give themselves loopholes at the same time that they are forcing everybody else to bite the bullet, that's why you very rarely see any sons of privelege doing anything dangerous or undesirable like being in a war (Al Gore being a rare exception). It's mostly blacks, and poor to middle class whites, like my father, who went to Vietnam.

well, from what i've observed from the 'love will tear us apart' video and NO's performance of 'ceremony' on TOTP, there's certainly enough of him to, erm, 'play' with! (as deborah curtis noted, he did like to wear tight trousers!)

Well, as an American, I never really got into the Beatles, Queen, Pink Floyd, or Radiohead. I know a couple of songs from each band, but I have liked New Order since 1988...and there are other Manc bands that I like...The Jam, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Lamb, just to name a few. I think one of the reasons I couldn't ever get into Floyd was the fact that they are worshipped in America, and---being a struggling musician myself---got sick and tired of having to deal with other musicians who want nothing but a Pink Floyd sound from others. So just like other popular stuff at the time, I shut Floyd out. Also, a lot of other aspiring (and wannabe) musicians I knew at the time would just use Floyd and Led Zeppelin as music to get high to, which is just not my sort of thing.

Granted, there are a few Floyd tracks that I like, but let me be honest...I don't own any Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin. :D

i think what he means, m. domingo, is that the jam are from nowhere near manchester. they're from woking, surrey (at least paul is)--SOUTH of london, and they lived in the london area. siouxsie are from london, as well.

Huh! Well, blame the producers of '24 Hour Party People', because they threw in The Jam as being Mancs, and THAT'S where I got that from! :)

Well, regardless...I don't like Zeppelin, I do like The Jam, and I'm an even bigger NO/JD fan.
