What was it your first time?

hope I've got this right...

it was my junior high school's talent show at the end of the school year, may 1986 i believe, and these 3 girls did a dance to blue monday. i thought 'wow, that's an awesome song'. i had no idea it was new order until the following year, however, when i finally bought substance after seeing the video for true faith.

...the following year they did their dance to a bronski beat song. (i was really into them for about five minutes, as well!) :D

Blue monday for me, my older brother had it on a tape. I never knew what it was until true faith 94 came out and then i found blue monday, thieves like us and confusion on 12" in a box in the loft.

I used to dance to EGG in a sweaty basement club in my home town, I'm pretty sure the DJ played Temptation as well.

I didn't know who they were by until BM came out & then it all fell into place & that my sisters JD records I was listening to at the same time were (almost) the same band.

I saw UB40 interviewed on telly recently. The years seem to have been even less kind to them than to our lads, they were all quite...er...large. Incidentaly, is it long term over indulgence in alcohol that gives one that puffy red 'Phil Mitchell' complexion?

There's nothing that makes one feel quite as ancient as seeing what's become of the pop stars of one's youth (compare UB40 in that Red Red Wine video with them now, or, ulp, Sting now with early Police videos. And why is it that as pop stars age they seem to more and more resemble their 'spitting image' puppets?)

Regret was the first concious memory I have of a "New Order" song (as in, "Oh, that's New Order? Interesting."). Having grown up in the Eighties, I'm sure I ran across BLT or True Faith, but Regret's the one I remember....

First song I can actually remember was True Faith. Saw the weird ass video on MTV with my sis, who was already a big NO fan. ahhhh memories...

I first heard NO that I know of when MTV aired the "perfect kiss" as a new video in I guess '84. I was immediately struck by the bass playing, electronics, weird vocals and non stupid MTV attitude and became a fan. I think I had heard LWTUA prior to that but it hadn't made an impression (still doesn't make much of one).

Nineteen Sixty-Three

I remember hearing "Johnny, don't point that gun at me..." on the radio all the time when I was about 6 or 7. I didn't know who it was, or the name of the song, but I do remember that I loved it, much to the confusion of other Michael Jackson and Madonna loving little kids. I guess I was a New Order fan before I even knew what New Order was. It's kind of funny that the radio that I remember hearing in the 80s as a little kid sounds nothing like what local radio stations are playing now during their so called 'Retro 80s Hours' when they play nothing but hair bands and Madonna. Maybe once in a while they'll play New Order or the Cure, but it's always something any idiot would know.

"Age of Consent" and "Blue Monday" when they were new and I was 9 or 10, but I didn't know who they were by and didn't know they were by the same band because they sounded totally different from each other and I didn't even notice they at least had the same person singing. I loved "Age of Consent" at the time but didn't appreciate 'Blue monday". Then the radio station died and I didn't become truly aware of New Order until True Faith.

I also must have heard and loved Transmission back then, because when I bought Substance in 1989 thinking I only knew LWTUA, I recognized it. What a treat!

Blue Monday. My brother had made a big deal about staying in one night to record the Radio 1 evening programme of the time (Janice Long?). He'd heard that they were going to play the new New Order single. That crappy AM recording got played to death so I couldn't help but notice it. My interest grew from there. (It wasn't until a couple of years later that I developed into the a rabid must buy everything on the day of release nutter, though.)

The bonus was that my brother already had some JD and NO stuff in his collection, which somehow mysteriously made its way into mine....

Ceremony. I couldn't wait for it to come out, was so pleased to hear it on Peel a couple of weeks before it was released. Needless to say, I wasn't disappointed.

Mine is a very strange way to arrive to NO. I was at my grannies' listening to the radio and they were talking about "this new music style from America: Break dance/rap" and then they played a couple of songs, one of them had lifted the intro from BM and then someone was rapping over it. I got immediately hooked.

Yes, it was love at first hear for NO and me and we have never looked back since.

BTW that's one of the reasons I could never join the usual BM abusing.

When I was in 7th grade, one of my favorite radio stations at the time kept playing "Bizarre Love Triangle (Radio Edit)" constantly. Then I heard "Blue Monday" and then "TBTHOG"...

Temptation 7" in oct 82. A friend came round to do a tape and said "listen to this, remember JD?" I'd never heard anything like that intro. Is it a sequencer? Why do you think I've been going on about it for the last fortnight?

I think thats around the time I first heard it. Probably the best 7" single ever made.

around 94-95, i was watching much music and they had a spotlight on new order. saw the video for BLT and that was the only song i liked from new order for 3 years. i thought they were too dated for my taste...my how times have changed.

I heard Ceremony first on a sunday evening listening to the top 30 or was it 40 on BBC radio One, taped it on my trusty old music centre, remember them? I bought the 7" and green sleeved 12" the following Saturday at the Virgin megastore Tottenham Court road tube. I still have those copies in mint, funny I bought the white sleeved 12" but the 12" green old copy was inside. I must take it back next time I`m up over.

Blue Monday was the beginning of the end for me. They managed to get under my skin like no other band - still don't know why.

I'm sorry to say my first exposure to NO related stuff was the cover of BM by Orgy (it still is a cool video). I was young. But the first real song was Shellshock, on the Pretty in Pink soundtrack, I was really dazzled. First exposure to the Smiths and the Furs too. I got a copy of the Orgy cover last year and think it really sucks now, and I even like heavy metal. Nothing will ever be better than the original.

"True Faith" I believe, back around 1988 or 1989. At that time I didn't know who sang the song but I really liked it. Too bad it took me a few more years after that to really start discovering the band.

Sice PC7L was the first album I heard it would have to be Age of Consent

When I was about twelve I watched trainspotting (yes, i know its a film about heroin junkies, and i was a young, impressionable 12 year old..well my parents arnt very responsible!) and I remember the girl in it singing the ooo, youve got green eyes e.t.c line, and i thought, wow that sounds good, got the soundtrack, listened to that song over and over again, and decided i liked New Order! But i listened to the greatest hits, didnt like it because it seemed very dated and it didnt have Temptation on (as far as i remember)so..never listened to any New Order again.

Fastforward four years, and being a depressive adolescent i took to Joy Division in a big way..and when that ran out got in to New Order, now no longer considering them dated, and had to pay 20 bloody quid for a copy of substance, grrrrrr!

Orgy for me. That cover rocks. Only their first CD was good though. :(

I heard Blue Monday at the school disco and thought it was great but never bought it at the time. It wasn't until i watched their set on BBC's Rock Around The Clock in 1984 and in particular Temptation that i got hooked. I thought Barney looked the part in his shorts and tee shirt so i went straight out afterwards and bought Temptation 12'and a pair of blue shorts. Still got the 12' but grown out of the shorts!. Also still got the video - what a performance.

For me it was the 94 release of True Faith. I saw the video for it on Top of The Pops & was totally taken aback by it!

I went straight out to buy THE BEST OF & have been a committed NEW ORDER fan ever since!

Blue Monday on TOTP, 83 or whenever. I must have been about 12, and the fact that such a point was made over it being live put me off the very idea of live music for a long long long time.

"Blue Monday by Orgy", that's pretty sad. I remember a few people back in highschool that knew about New Order only because of that wretched cover song.

Anyway, the first song that I heard (knowing it was New Order) was "True Faith". I saw the video for it in my mid-teens, and a few years later a buddy of mine let me borrow "The Best Of" and I quickly became a fan. "Blue Monday" and "BLT" were very familiar to me as well, but I never knew who the band was.

Also, the first Joy Division song I heard was "LWTUA" on the radio, and the first Electronic song I heard was "Disappoinment" on the movie "Cool World". The other side projects I never heard of 'till I bought the albums. Although Monaco's "What Do You Want From Me" sounded very familiar to me. Was that song on a soundtrack or something?

Blue Monday for me. It was just impulse, I liked the name of the band and the name of the song. 6 months later I was converted to JD as well. And for those of you who mention UB40, the greatest band to come out of my fair city. Whats Manchester got to shout about :p

The first time I heard a NO song was way back in '88, at my junior high school dance in nyc. I kept wondering who "this morning sun" song was by and where I could find it. All I remember was that the floor actually filled up. '89 HS talent show and this girl that I had a huge crush on did a choreographed dance with her friend to BLT. The interesting part was that the song was being covered by our high school band! I asked who recorded that track and I heard NO, for the first time. 1990 someone made me a "mixed tape" including a couple of tracks from technique--coincidentally the same tape introduced me to the smiths vis-a-vis "girlfriend in a coma." Got substance, heard LWTUA in '91, freshman year in college and the rest is history.

State of the Nation, so I have an emotional connection to it, and I don't dismiss it as most people at this forum do. Not many stations played New Order at that time, so I guess I've been somewhat hampered in my early years. However, that made taping each song played on the radio a special experience.

Blue Monday '88

I was in vacation in Germany, and I listened to it in a record store... I liked it so much that I played it several times (I was listening with headphones, so nobody noticed that point). But actually I went really into NO in 1994 when I bought their Best Of.

The first video I saw was Round&Round in 1989, in the french charts TV show... It was presented as a possible entry in the forthcoming weeks, but it never enter the charts... shame.

I was a Joy Division fan by the end of 1993 but I didn't know a thing about New Order. Then I happened to read an article in a rock-encyclopedia that Joy Divsion became New Order. And I just waited for a chance to hear them. And here they are: the English MTV broadcast several times the old "True Faith" video on their "Greatest Hits" show. But I could not believe my eyes. I remember asking myself - are those guys really the ones who played "Heart And Soul" and "Decades"? And then why do they look so YOUNG, ha? And it took a few months for me to accept it as music for I had been more into rock back then. Sooth to say I had never thought of dance music before.

True Faith... because it's track 1 on "The Best Of" and I bought that to see if I would like the band that Joy Division had become. It was really BLT and Perfect Kiss that got repeat plays, and when 24HPP came out and I got the soundtrack, the song I always listened to was Temptation. That got me into the "must buy everything" mode.

It would have been True Faith, probably some time in the mid 90s, I always liked the song, but it was seeing the BLT clip in 1997 that started it all. So BLT has that special significance to me, and always will.

So for the question itself, the answer is True Faith. I recognised Blue Monday when I first heard it, and loved it, I may have heard that around the same time as True Faith. But when I realised BLT was new order i was thinking of other songs which sound like New Order and 'the morning sun one' came to mind. Another one which did was 'If You Leave' by OMD, but me and a friend of mine thought 'nah, its not good enough' and we were right.

I also recognised 'Shellshock' when I bought the best of, for some god unknown reason that got airplay in the 90s in Australia.

Remember lounging around in the 6th form common room at school, must have been early part of '81, and one of my mates brought this 7" in a gold sleeve in and put on the record player at full volume. There were a few JD fans there, but no-one knew what the track was. I was just mesmerised by the opening bass line. Still am.

Great time 1988 , The Perfect Kiss - Substance version ! My cousin brought a tape with his favourite New Order songs.I was a A-ha fan those days and New Order changed my mind completely.A year later Joy Division - Unknown Plesures album came to me since then became my no.1 band.

Temptation, but I only found out it was Temptation after I found out that Blue Monday was Blue Monday and I bought 1981-82 in 1983. If that makes sense.

August 2001, playing Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on the Nintendo 64, tuned into my local station 104.7. And my life changed.....it was super smooth...

True Faith was my first NO track, if I remember right; it was probably when I was a kid.

John Peel playied "Temptation" in '82. Went to our local record shop after school next day, and they had just the one copy of the 7". No info, just that gloriously obscure cover and that wonderful music. Took me a few months to make the connection between "Temptation" and the 12" of "Transmission" I'd bought a couple of months before...

I was listening to my favorite radio show, one afternoon in September 1981, when the DJ announced a special New Order/Joy division broadcast, to celebrate the Movement/Still releases. I wasn't aware of either band, and was particularly moved by the DJ's account of Ian's suicide and the subsequent birth of New Order. Their music got me hooked from the first moment: Ceremony was the first one played, right at the beginning of the show. I seem to remember that EGG, LWTUA and Decades were played too... But I must confess that New Order only became officially my Number One Band with the release of Low-life, the finest album ever made!

My brother won a trip to England in May '85 and brought back several records among which were Low-Life and the FBN five track EP w/ Temptation as well as the SMiths "How soon is now?" and Paul Hardcastle's "19" if memory serves. So it would either be Temptation or Love Vigilantes w/ the off chance of it being Elegia if we couldn't figure out which was side one or side two of low-life. I do know that Love Vigilantes was the first song that I really got into.

First heard "Blue Monday" on a music show called "Countdown" in 1983 (they performed live), when they toured Australia, me and my mates loved it so much that we went to their second gig in Melbourne at the "Seaview Ballroom" (now a yuppie complex, the scum) didn't know any of the songs except BM but had a great time anyway. P.S. it took me a year to figure out why some people in the audience were screaming out "Joy Division".

My story is exactly the same, except I'm pretty sure it was early summer 1985. I still remember seeing that video. I demanded to be driven to the store that day so I could buy the single. I was 14 and my favorite band at the time was Van Halen. The song completely blew me away. I remember thinking "are they playing this live??? no one plays live in videos. Is this dance music? Why aren't they dancing? They look bored. Why does the bass player play like that? Wait, they look unhappy now. What's going on? Play it again!" I was hooked. All these years later they're still the best.

The first song I knew was NO was Blue Monday because it had heavy play at The Wave, a club in Honolulu, HI. The first song that really struck me down was Perfect Kiss, and FACD 100...the rest really is history and 18 years of being a very loyal NO fan. This is the first time in my life I have been able to have the time to discuss my NO interests with others or you would have seen me sooner!

It was something with a robotic, machine gun staccato drum machine intro, then a fade in from a sequenced synth...

...Not sure what it was. Never heard it again.

my first NO track was true faith. i was 14, and i was flicking through the music channels and i stumbled across this video with weird characters slapping each other. so i kept it on for comic value... little did i know that watching this video would change my musical outlook forever. :D
