Rate Get Ready

7, if only because it's a grower. It's a great album, but stacked against the others (which is, I'm assuming, the criteria for this poll) it seems a bit humbled by comparison to Low-life or PCL (my two faves)

Seven! (the premix version is an 8.5 sullied only by Slow Jam and the awful RunWild lyrics)

If the official release had mirrored the Premix exactly i would rate Get Ready a bit higher (8.5 - 9)...a better tracklisting for sure and the versions are superior in my opinion. Why they thought Slow Jam and Rock the Shack were better than Sabotage, Player and Behind Closed Doors (even though it's not on the Premix) will always be a mystery to me. Slow Jam and Rock the Shack are more "b-side" tunes to my ears. Can you believe i'm still pissed about that?

it may or may not surprise you that i will disagree with your statement about seeing PN and VS live. I do not think we will ever hear Vicious Streak live and that's fine with me. They couldn't reproduce the glory of the original. Same with some other slower numbers they've tried but failed to produce live. Primitive Notion is just too hard for them to do and that is the main reason in my little head for them not playing it. Slow Jam is just a simple little guitar, bass, drums song that doesn't take any special focus (or talent) to play. I just relistened to Rock the Shack at Glasgow Barrowlands...when they stop about 10 seconds in with Barney shouting to "Stop, stop it's too hard....let's play Blue Monday". They just don't have the ability (sobriety) to pull off something like Primitive Notion.

And NO! i will not get over Slow Jam...I love NewOrder and to me Slow Jam is a slap in the face. A serious scar on the band. Sorry, but I just cannot understand where they were coming from when they wrote that song. I'd take SubCulture 12" mix any day over that.

I do not agree with the premise stated by you and Jarvis that the band play SJ and RTS because they are their favorites off Get Ready. NewOrder are not in the mode of playing what they WANT to play anymore. They play what they think the general punter wants to hear and what requires the least amount of rehearsal time.

Gave it a 7 as well. I actually listened to it earlier. Some of the things I never originally liked now wash over me a bit i.e. the 'rock' drum sounds on Crystal that is looped as is now the norm with pro tools production it would seem. As anyone who'd downloaded the samples from the Acid Planet comp would be familiar with. I actually found myself singing along to shithouse until the chorus kicked in and the the usual shake of my head response took over. Overall I can't go as low as 6 for something that contains Primitive Notion, Close Range and Crystal or as high as 8 because I rank it below all the others bar probably Republic.

7 from the Cobweb jury. 3 points were lost because of the inclusion of Slow Jam, Cock The Snack and Run Wild. (Note how Turn My Way has somehow jumped into the BCE top 7 of this album after one play extra loud !)

I give it a 9. It was so refreshing to hear after such a long time of silence. My only problem with the album was some of the lyrics. (you know which songs I am talking about...)

I gave Get Ready an 8... I still play it regularly and don't skip anything but RTS. I rate only Brotherhood and Low-Life higher; and it's at the same level as Technique. It has a considerable number of very good songs: Crystal, Turn My Way, Vicious Streak, Someone Like You. My favourite is Primitive Notion though; that's classic New Order. I also agree that the album would have been better with Player In The League and Sabotage.

5 - just listened to it again (for the first time in 4 months)on the drive oop north and found it disappointing, rather than pushing the boundries like the earlier release's (excluding Repugnent) it smacks of music by numbers.

I'm surprised that some people cannot be objective and rate the album accordingly. I know this is NewOrder but they still put some AWFUL, AWFUL music on their disc. They are faltering and the last two albums prove that. The majority of Get Ready is very good but the rest are as Hac put it "music by numbers" and nothing else.

no shit.....First of all, NO BAND, and I mean not a single band in history, is or has been perfect. Look at some of the most legendery bands/singers of all time....Beatles, Stones, David Bowie, U2, REM...there is probably a whole albums worth of shit songs from any of those guys. Even their greatest albums probably have at least one dud on them (whats the dud on Technique??). Some of my fav bands, including NO, have been around long enough to have a career that spans decades and I could easily name a handful of their songs that are weak or disappointing, but I dont. I dont see the point. In fact not only do I not worry about them, I dont even listen to the ones I dont like. I know some of the posts on this site are designed by the postee to stimulate conversation and should be taken in that context. I completely understand that........but it does get old..... Oh yea havent decided how to rate Get Ready. Am wondering should I compare it to only other NO records, or against my fav records in general. hmm.....

I am probably the most frequent "negative" poster here but my critical nature is not reserved for just NewOrder. I live for music. I spend all extra money on music and every hour i'm awake, i am listening to music. I hold people to certain standards. I actually listen to Republic straight through and ENJOY the whole album. Get Ready was a great return for NewOrder. My favorite album of 2001. I listen to NewOrder vs. Other bands on a ratio of about 20:1 because of that something special in their music. I believe my comments are OBJECTIVE and not tainted because of my love for the band. Some can enjoy everything they hear from the band just because it's NewOrder but I try to see things objectively. Also, I got into NewOrder because of their use of electronics so a song like Slow Jam is SHITE in my opinion while Someone Like You is EXCELENT in my opinion even though a lot of people hate it. I wonder how many people would like Slow Jam if it said written by..Blink 182 or some other pop band.

The most complete Album to date.

I gave it a 7, the first half is definitely stronger than the second half in my opinion. Slow Jam is average, Rock The Shack I don't mind, Close Range didnt do much for me at first sounded a bit New Order by the numbers, but it has grown on me a lot, and I can even tolerate Run Wild now!

The best tracks for me are Crystal, Vicious Streak and Primitive Notion (brilliant Hooky bass). I think they could play Primitive Notion live, I think the closest they have done to it in terms of arrangement is Sunrise, and they pulled that off live no problems.

It ranks 4th on my list of New Order albums, just below Brotherhood with Technique and Low Life occupying the top 2.

A lot of it depends on what era you get into New Order me thinks. My sisters rate Republic as probably New Order's best, and Get Ready and Technique would be the only others they listen to.

I give it a very solid 8 after listening to the CD 3 times.

I think the first 5 songs are all pretty much excellent and easy to listen to. The next 5 as a whole aren't as strong--but none of them are too bad.

But I defintely agree the first half has the best music--but overall I give the CD a solid 8.

It depends what standards you are measuring Get Ready against. Compared to other CD's from 2001 it would get a thumping 10. If you have to allow yourself rating space for CD's such as Technique, Low Life and PC&L. then...

I have compromised with myself on an 8. Which is quite good bearing in mind that it's got in it RTS.

All in all they have more than fulfilled my expectations.

I have been waiting 8 years for this album and it blew me away, do I need to say anything else except 8 years waitng

gave her an 8. she has a few dodgy tracks, but on the whole, a cracking album.

I really don't like Get Ready. I think it would've been made much better, however, if Player in the League had been made an album track.

Last week i would have given a 5 but since i have started to listen to it in the car i am realy starting to like this one and have given it an 8. This album is a grower.

This is a fantastic album that ranks as one of my favorite NO records. I'm giving it an 8, but only because it lacks the consistency of my favorite NO albums, Movement and P, C & L. Bernard, Stephen, and Hooky have done a great job of capturing the NO 'sound' of the past, but also infusing it with present, and even a touch of the future.

Get Ready is a 6, in my opinion...nice, but not as I expected.

A lot of people here have mentioned that they would have rated Get Ready higher if the song sabotage was included on the album...the first time i heard sabotage i was very disappointed with it, but i admit it has grown on me, it just seemed like an odd sound for new order, although i must say, the song behind closed doors...was awesome, really awesome, i hope they stick to that formula for the next album.

Just curious but what and where is this song PLAYER IN THE LEAGUE?

10: Simply the best album ever. Can I give 11? OK, because of RTS let it be 10.

Get Ready is sorely missing Gillian Gilbert's soaring cathedral synthesizer melodies. Otherwise the album is an exceptional accomplishment after an eight-year hiatus. Had Gillian never joined the band this is more the sound I would expect. For the next album to be up to snuff, she'll have to make a contribution. Creatively they are in a stall shown by the recent Retro and International. There's loads of great material on both, with nothing new added and a haphazard format giving away their current status.

Give it an 8...

other than that, i think i've listened to the album about 5 times altogether..

although i've heard the 'premix' version a few times more..

disappointing, to say the least..

You were expecting more out a band who haven't released anything you've liked since 1987?

I have given it an 8 because basically I was over the moon that there was a new album at last. I would say the two misfits on this one are Close Range and Rock The Shack. I think Sabotage is absolutely sublime and should have been on the album but I haven't heard Player in the League yet. Reading this has just made me order a copy so I look forward to hearing that one.

7 - Good, but can do much better

10 -- i think it's fantastic, my favourite album of all time. Of course it has missteps such as Someone Like You, RTS ect but the singles kill: Crystal, 60 MPH, Primitive Notion, Slow Jam, Close Range all have a fantastic groove. + there are the growers in Turn My Way, Vicious Streak and Run Wild, it's like a true album should be. It has the musical depth and diversity that Republic lacked.

Barney's vocals are ever so smooth, and his lyrics are much more rich than other albums--he's not just talking about the chick he didn't quite remember after he woke up with a hangover...some of it's about him now (Turn My Way, Slow Jam).

After some 'riping' I went to this album again lately, and I found that I really like this one. Nice production, some pretty guitar-workouts, those typical Bernie-style vocalizing and what's most important: good songs. 8 out of 10. (Not a return to form as some propose, cause I don't think 'Republic' was a weak album at all!)

Has anyone else noticed a little too much distortion(production related) on this album? It almost ruins "Crystal" for me. There's also distortion is several of the other vocal tracks that seem to bother me too. I think there are some FANTASTIC tunes on Get Ready, but some of the production just ruins it for me. Anyone else hearing this on the CD or bothered by it?

A very strong album marred by 'lyrics' a 4th year student would be embarrased with. Plenty of Hooky's bass which had been missing for too long.

Someone like you, Crystal and Primitive Nation stand out. Who decided to put 'Sabotage' on the back of '60 Miles An Hour'? I think 'Sabotage' is the best B-side since True Faith/1963.

I'm going for 8/10 on this one - it'll never top the old stuff (then again, what could?) but it's still good. A fine comeback! :)

7! It's better tha republic was but not even close as good all those five 80's classics.

Seven is not bad but not even close something like essential. it's simply a good ans long lasting album. I just think, that those 8:s, 9:s and tens should be used very carefully :)

I am a fan since 83(Blue Monday)and I do not understand why people hates so much "Slow Jam" and "Rock the shack". Slow Jam is my favourite and the onlyone I sometimes listen to, not very original but powerfull. Rock the Shack is the kind of punk/rock I love and the Gillepsie's voice does it well. I Don't like too much the LP's extended mix of Crystal, it sounds very old (reminds me Cure's 17 seconds LP), but it's a good song (also the dance mixes), maybe the better since True faith. Turn my way is also good, whith an unusual style. The rest is crap, the beginning of the songs are good (the intros of "Primitive Notion" or "Someone Like You" are often used on french TV programms), but these songs turn bad. It makes 4 good songs on 8 so I will put a "5/10" for the LP. Really better than Republic,I only like "Regret" and "Everyone,Everywhere", just 2 on 11 (It makes 1.8/10).

I gave it a 9, since almost all the tracks but slow jam and run wild are not only good but they are great, plus considering republic, the album could have been 100 times worse.

Sorry, there's 10 traxes on Get Ready, so I put 4/10. I'm old and there was a time, each NO LP had only 8 tracks, but they were all goods or at least interristing experimentals (before Brotherhood), no fillers.

That's true. Even a ten track (which is obviously a small one these days) album has a risk to become a bit too long and most of all not as good as a whole as it could be.

There are great long albums too, like the upcoming Radiohead will be, but the extra 20 minutes will not make it any better than for example P,C&L which has almoust half amount of songs than the mentioned Radiohed album. Then there are so much crappy 10 songs and ~30 minutes kind of albums.

In Get Ready case, it must have been a "follow the "an album should have 10 songs on it" rule". Although it would have been a great promotional and so on... effort to put a 8 track album on a market these days.

Right, times change, I mean this Lp could have be better whith the B sides "behind closed doors" or "Player in the league" (never listen to them but according to the forum) or why not one of the dance mix of Crystal to fill up the CD. In fact after Republic and the stupids remixes period (rest of or BM95),get ready is a good surprise.

A little over-produced, but it doesn't come close to ruining Crystal, IMO.

i think it's a cracking album (i rated it an 8)

considering they had been out of the recording studio for around 8 years, and come back together and make a record which is somewhat absent of electronica and full or 100% rock was a breath of fresh air for the music industry and NO fans (i think so anyway. it signified that they were back!

I gave it an 8. It's a hell of an album. Swap in some of the b-sides for RTS and maybe one or two other tracks, and add Here to Stay to provide a slamming dance number to balance all that rocking and you'd get a nine easy.

And I'll defend the lyrics, which some people are taking WAY too literally. Crystal isn't about having to go to a different grocer, it's about the sweetest thing in the world, priceless and oh-so-fragile. Get it?

7-why? there are better albums in this universe. get ready is good but not solid enough to get a ten. good albums have a flow and a feel that is consistant. they never have songs that you skip and they never end on as limp an ending as 'get ready' does.

I give it an 8 since I could do without slow jam, rock the shack, and run wild. Though, I admit I hate rock the shack for the chorus only, they verses are excellent. Run Wild has those terrible album closing lyrics, and slow jam is definately a bside. I'd much rather have sabotage, brutal, and behind closed doors on there. Other than that, I rank Get Ready higher than Republic, and especially like the lyrics for crystal and the video--such a great stab at crap like the strokes. Cmon people admit it-ANYONE can do the strokes, and Americans need to learn to have more variety on their plate. You can like St. Etienne and Metallica, I'm proof.

It's the album that got me back into NO. I really think Crystal is worth the price of admission, and there's lots of other tracks on it, like, eh - Christ did I really give it 7? I'm very old - there have never been any perfect albums: for me possibly the first Velvet Underground, or Astral Weeks (Van Morrison - unfortunatetyl he didn't really sound like that - or want to); Happy Sad (Tim Buckley), Clear Spot (Captain Beefheart), Pet Sounds, or Sergeant Peppers, Workingman's Dead (or American Beauty) Grateful Dead, Ogden's Nut Gone Flake, (Small Faces), first Oasis Album (before they got the Beatles), Springsteen's 'Tom Joad', What's going on, (Marvin Gaye) - Never mind the Bollocks, the First Cure album, and of course there was that band, what were they called? Oh yes, Joy Division - NO have been heartily inconsistent, and I love them, but their albums are a bit of a mess. NIce Covers though!

I'd give Get Ready a solid 8/10. Close Range is one of the finest tracks they've ever recorded whilst the singles Crystal and 60MPH are superb.
