Because you basically refuse to travel beyond your doorstep? When New Order reformed last year the first two gigs were hundreds of miles away from where I lived but I still (and numerous others) made the trip. Nobody really moaned "they're not playing at my local town hall".

They'll never be able to satisfy a continent as large as the USA so fans such as yourself have to make sacrifices such as travelling beyond your city to see them. For an essentially British band such as New Order especially at this stage in the game it's completely unrealistic to expect them to play backwater gig venues just to satisfy parochial fans such as yourself.

Get off your arse and go and see them. If they're not to your liking after the effort then by all means, moan away... I'm sure we'll hear about it.

as an american, i totally agree with this. it isn't 1989 and they aren't about to play 30 or whatever US dates.

on the other hand, i wouldn't be surprised if they do a short US tour in the next 18 months, even just 8 dates or something, and in that case i'd imagine they would play major cities like NYC, Chicago, LA, Atlanta, etc.

and, come on, even if they don't play DC, the drive from DC to NYC is just five hours.... MAN UP!

Let's talk again when they actually schedule a NYC gig. I'll believe it when I see it.
And Hooky has made D.C. a regular stop on the tour now; he doesn't consider it a backwater.

True, it's just a shame you've not been able to hear a single New Order track so far. Still, at the current rate of albums per year you'll hear Technique in D.C. by... 2019 now he considers it a regular stop. Coincides with the 30th anniversary so get those party poppers ready... :smoking:

Fucking hell even by 2019.... Time to mix up the set list a bit.

The only New Order album I would pay to hear Hooky play would be Movement, and I hope he doesn't even try to play Temptation. That's just not going to work. I will be the first to admit that after Movement it became Barney's Band.

And I did see the original band play both Technique and Republic. Wish I had caught the '87 tour too.

Was that in or outside D.C.? Sorry had to ask.

Edit: Oh I see from your signature it was Maryland so... that's that answered.

Yep, only Hooky comes right to his door in DC.

When he started being uncomplimentary about Steve and in particular Gillian from October last year I honestly believe he shot himself in the foot and underestimated the high esteem fans hold her in. Especially as she had been unwell and widely missed from the line-up for a full decade; the backlash was palpable.

Personally, I still do admire Hooky and lots of the music he's made (I rate Music For Pleasure very very highly) but I think his weakness is he can be a bit too reactionary, defiant and wears his heart on his sleeve in every situation. Superb qualities for a fucking cool rock star of course but in other circumstances can be a bit undignified and counter-productive.

As a fan I'd love to read the words "Peter Hook and New Order reached an amicable agreement today" in the near future and that's the end of it all.

Preferably before it hits a court of law and one party loses out... badly.

 :) :read: Agreed.

I used to be pretty even in my support for both 'sides'. I didnt bother me what he did with the Hac memorabilia and it didnt bother me that the played JD songs (still doesnt). But my support has been chipped away by the steady assault on the senses from the increasingly bizarre series of press interviews. As we say round here, hes acting like an out and out arsehole.

Its that bad now that, yeah, fuck his images off from the top of the screen.

Watching Hooky on my NO DVDs isnt a nice experience any more, its an uncomfortable one.

But, like i said, he thinks we're all cunts anyway.

Chill.

They'll play the US this year.

I'm already collecting Brownie Points at home and started saving the pennies to hopefully make a couple of dates.

Once a very long time ago I remember reading a feature during which Hooky was described as being "incorrigible", I wasn't quite sure what the word meant so I looked it up.. Here are some definitions..

Bad beyond correction or reform

Impervious to constraints or punishment

Firmly fixed, not easily changed

Not easily swayed or influenced

If everyone in the rock industry was as vocal as unfiltered as Hooky, people would be quick to call them all arseholes too. Tony Wilson made the point once that all musicians are arseholes.

In many respects I'm probably an arsehole too. But to suddenly not want to see Hooky in the DVDs or take his images off the screen is perhaps a little extreme.

To my mind Bernard is something of a businessman/diplomat, Hooky speaks his mind without running his comments through a filter first. So people's impression of Hooky will be worse as a result. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Bernard isn't the nicer guy, perhaps he is, who knows? But when the hell (bar x-f**tor etc) was music all about being the nicer guy? When did we all get so PC? Will we get to "Well, Bernard used to do drugs, and I don't really think that's a good thing, so I can't watch him playing guitar on Love Vigilantes anymore".

Are we really fans of the music or the people?

I'm a big fan of both 'sides' and would also love if Hooky toned down the somewhat random outbursts, but truth be told, when I stood at the front with Hooky playing the bass of Ceremony inches away from me, I couldn't have cared less if he'd just looted the local post office.

Well, perhaps not everyone gets as giddy and starstuck as you do but, going by the title of the thread, some other people actually do think that your behaviour and conduct matters irrespective of your profession.

Nothing to do with being "giddy" or "starstruck". Those who know me well will assure you that I have never come close to either. I think the idea of being starstruck is comical. I've been 'close' to Hooky several times and have never felt in the least excited by his presence or 'starstruck'. However when he is playing, it is the music that excites me, not the man.

My point was simply that enjoying the *music* itself, and being a fan of the *music* itself, as opposed to the personal attributes of the musicians, is more important to me.

For those who are more interested in the 'celebrity gossip' / 'personal lives' aspect of music, fine. Just saying it's not me and that the idea of not watching DVDs because you have an issue with aspects of the personal life of one of the members, seems extreme to me.

Yeah but he is a bass guitarist in a rock band, not the local vicar,I am surprised that people are shocked by his outbursts, he was hardly not going to be a bit peeved when the others reformed without him even if it is partly his own antics that have led to this happening...

Yes, because Hooky needs to hear the truth and not what all his yes-men are telling him.

um, yeah -- because that is dead in the water and a pretty futile and boring conversation until Hooky realizes he should stop screwing over his fans and let it be released.

What does he need to hear?

Why is it his fault Lost Sirens is not coming out?

They should remix "Lost Sirens" and take Hookys bass off. get Tom to record his own basslines, and then stick it out. New Order don't need kind of pointlessly obstructive behaviour.

Having this as a sticky won't make the Hookster reel it in.

Peter (or Jack if you're the one passing these messages onto your Dad) - STOP NEW ORDER BASHING! You left the group, there was no agreement to split. Go to court and get your royalties then just move onto the next phase in life. Write a book about in a few years if you want, but FFS SHUT UP FOR NOW!

Why is such a poor thread pinned? It's easy to judge him without knowing the whole story. Both Bernard and Hooky have been doing stupid things, and we still don't even know why they split.

Er, well we do know why they split. As Hook stated in one of his recent interviews it was allegedly to do with their song writing partnership irrevocably breaking down:

The final split had been in the offing for a few years before it actually happened

‘The end of the band was about taste- his taste changed and his taste wanted less of me in the sound. He didn’t like the counterpoint of melody, he didn’t want the bass stealing the song. He wanted it like Electronic and that’s the trouble when we got to ‘Sirens Call’- he wanted it like Electronic- normal songs.

Of course, that's just one side - I'm sure there's a lot more to it than just "there's not enough bass in the mix".

I think in hindsight both Bernard and Hooky have said things they now regret. I can see valid points from both sides, but also some very stupid remarks and reasons.

From a personal level having met them both a few times, i've always found Hooky a fantastic person ,and Bernard came across as a bit of a arrogant twat. So I don't think this is all Hooky's fault

Yes, but's the question, why is it his fault it's not coming out?

Someone needs to come up with a realistic close to the truth answer, then maybe make your judgement on that!

"Jack, tell your Dad this, tell your Dad that" replace Hooky's bass lines, you really think this is as easy as all that?

As a co-writer of the material it needs his approval before it can be released, he has withdrawn it for reasons of his own, probably as some kind of leverage in the dispute.
