Surprised how many people thought it was a Get Ready or Brutal outtake. To me it sounds like a definite leftover from Sirens' Call. For a start I don't think New Order's songs featured squealing guitar riffs a'la Phil C's effort on Hellbent until he started writing with them post-Get Ready. Hey Now What You Doing being a good example. Besides the keyboard and drum sections sound far more contemporary and poppier than much of GR. Anyway, I think it's been confirmed now that this track originates from 2005? I read something on Facebook to that effect anyway...
As for the song itself, it also sounded a bit derivative to me on the first few listens but after a few more on proper headphones I'm liking it a lot really. It beats the shit out of Krafty and a few other lacklustre songs on WFTSC. All the key ingredients of the band are there, even Phil. It's by no means earth-shattering but for a session outtake pieced together while the band are estranged it sounds pretty decent really. My only criticism is the production sounds a bit slick when they could have left a few rough edges in there. "B" grade overall.
Never mind another pointless Best Of, if the rest of the Sirens' outtakes are anything like Hellbent the band should just hand the material over to a trusted team of engineers and techs to let them piece the final bits together with each band member chipping in remotely where required. That's probably how the finished version of Hellbent came into existence. Then add the finished songs to a CD2 of a "deluxe" WFTSC reissue and I think most fans wouldn't mind shelling out again so long as there were 4-5 brand new songs to enjoy.
They'll never do it of course.

You really thought the band were giving away huge swathes of their back catalogue for free? I mean, seriously? 30 odd singles for free? I know some bands have occasionally given away the odd track or album as part of a larger publicity offensive or "please sign up to this mailing list" but Recycle was definitely not created by the band. Nor has it been officially endorsed by the band in any shape or form. At least not publicly that we know of.
It's one massive free bootleg basically. A damn good one it has to be said.
I lost any sympathy I had for the band losing money on it when they kept peddling the same tired Best Ofs to us for years and years. Even the Factory album reissues which turned out to be dismally defective wholly justified what the people behind Recycle did so hardly "pointless". I shelled out 75 quid on all of the Factory album remasters in good faith but was rewarded with audible glitch after audible glitch. On top of that Rhino did not respond to my request for replacements so I think a large chunk of fans downloaded Recycle in its entirety with zero guilt. It was such a relief at least someone knew what they were doing even if they weren't officially attached to the band.
On paper the blog is probably not legal yes but something like it was only inevitable after years of bollocks from "official" outlets. At least it was clearly put together with an eye for detail that would put most record label employess to shame.
The irony lost on them is that most fans would gladly have dipped their hands in their pocket for an official version of Recycle in the early 2000s... which I believe was the brainchild of the the late Rob Gretton. Most fans would have paid a generous sum too.
Hellbent is No. 13 on this week's Sirius XMU Download 15 so it is getting some airtime on Sirius. Heard it this morning at about 8:15am. Nice to hear it on the radio.
Just to throw this out there...
Any way this could be a hybrid track? An older track finished by Bad Lt.? Similar to "Let's Go" for the Best of? collection.
Hellbent is all over the place.

If its getting radio play why not release Hellbent as a single? Oh yeah... no one would buy Total then...
it is a great new order song, 2005, with brilliant arrangement, lyrics, vocals. it is timeless, as usual . never ever underestimate the magnificent value of each song with this band's name on it. there are more songs . maybe as many as 7. there are many recent excellent indie groups 2000- 2011 , but new order is always better, no matter what the competition creates. this is the top band worldwide for all time.

Listened to it again and again - I really like it. It's catchy, unlike the other half of WFTSC.
I don't understand what everyone's bitching about, I like the track fine - not their most memorable work, but there are a fair number of tracks I like less. The "watcha doin" made me cringe, but it gradually picks up, and the instrumental climax is very nice, a classic Order touch we haven't gotten enough of for some time. And for the record, I thought Sabotage, PitL, etc, were good tracks, B-sides though they might be. Better than Slow Jam or Rock the Shack, certainly.
No chance I'll buy the annual singles collection; I'll *gladly* pay for Recycle when the label twats actually put out something that good. Until then I feel no guilt.
Would like to hear the remaining Siren sessions tracks. Would like to hear some official live albums; it's a shame Barney's such a tight-fisted perfectionist (apparently). Wouldn't mind more along the lines of Retro Disc 5 - but as was discussed back then, there may not *be* that many "unreleased tracks" that are even worth hearing (especially if they get the reception Hellbent has gotten here). Remixes I have little or no use for.

Looks like I'm last to know. I've just been watching this morning's Soccer AM. They had some music playing behind Spanish goals......"blah-blah-watcha doin'" (that sounds like a NO lyric, I laugh)....then not very NO guitar.......(he sounds a bit like Bernard)..then an unmistakeable bass....sh!t the bed it IS New Order!..comes up on screen "Hellbent" June 6. I raced on here because I thought they were getting the band back together, on a mission from god. Alas. Nevermind, at least we got a b-side.

Maybe some of us are so desperate to hear unreleased material that some of us would like to give too much praise to the unreleased material. Of course, I'm not trying to argue with those who like the song....

I wasn't signed up at the time but I remember the period very well, I also remember how at the time everyone was complaining about the state of the UK charts and how New Order had to compete with dross like Five and S Club 7.
Little wonder did we know back then things would get a hell of a lot worse ten years later.
If New Order got into the singles chart today, it would be a ray of sunshine on a field of soggy manure.
It wouldn't have mattered if it really had been an all-time classic, it probably still would've been panned by most on here. Unfortunately, that's just the "disappointment" mentality surrounding the band these days which has been compounded for years firstly by how they messily imploded in 2006 then again (and again) with the defective re-releases the label has been plying us with ever since. Some fans also can't forgive them for leaving behind the "classic sound" so anything post-Factory NO do will always be shite to them. I don't personally get that mentality but each to their own.
There hasn't been a lot to get excited about as a New Order fan for quite some time. So when something new comes along it is probably held up to impossibly high standards. Unfairly so in my opinion as I like the track a lot for what it is.
I probably would have sent it back to Barney to write a new intro lyric (no more "what cha doin" please) and exorcising that bit would probably raise it straight away in many people's opinions. It's got to be said the vocal towards the end after the final chorus is superb (stayed in our beds etc.) love that bit.
I'm glad they've released it though not happy with being force-fed another Best Of in order to own the track in full PCM quality. I guess it's a compromise this time but a lop-sided one.

Don't read anything into that. I presume that's to differentiate between the tracks that are shared between other releases, they are recently remastered versions after all.
