Why do people make such a big deal about another compilation album? According to my calculations, Elvis and the Beatles have 4 freaking thousand compilations. It's just something record companies do, every few years they round up the greatest hits and put them out there again. Every major artist you can think of has those cheap looking '20th century masters' comps with horrible sleeve and a boring photo of the band littering up cd racks.

Nobody says you have to buy it.

Oh god, that is so nondescript. NO are just treading wafer thin water..... to think you have to shell out for the compilation just to hear............

That's why I like NewOrder. Because they are not boring, or mediocre overall. Some of their songs are the finest sounds I have ever ever heard. I liked NewOrder and travelled all over Europe because they were so good. Not because they were mediocre, or boring. I wouldn't spent so much time, or money, or miles, or have so many of their records if they were dull.

If this song were their best thing ever, I'd never cross the road to see them or buy their music. NewOrder were capable - even to the end - of so much better than this. NewOrder don't get a freepass that everything they do is godlike genius. I go into every new NewOrder song hoping it will be another classic : often to be disappointed. "Hellbent" is a thoroughly average song by a band that's bored of itself. We're not Haters : they set the bar so high than even "quite good" is a long way to fall, and ultimately boring and mediocre compared to their highest points. This song? Better than "MTO", not as good as almost everything else.

I wouldn't spent so much time, or money, or miles, or have so many of their records if they were dull.

Just listended to it. Will get back to it but it sounds to me like an average 'Siren's' track. The intro is VERY promising but it evolves in a good BL song (minus the bass of course).

After a few listens it's grown on me, very slightly.

The layering is good and it gets better as it goes along.

Would have been a suitable b-side ...

C'mon, everyone is entitled to an opinion! I think most people agree that the London era songs are a mixed bag of good and not-so-good (at least compared to the earlier work, if not in their own right).

Everyone is on here coz they LIKE New Order... i don't think anyone here has ever said "how crap everything that the band ever does is".

I think this should be a place for open and reasonable discussion (including measured and sensible criticism) and people shouldn't be beaten down for expressing a rational viewpoint.

Hellbent is competent, unremarkable record. You certainly wouldn't buy another unnecessary compilation to obtain it , but to those that do, bless you.

As posted on here earlier, there is a certain amount a treading water going on here, and this could of easily been an out take of say Brotherhood, but that was 25 years ago. Obviously this is London Records trying to obtain the cash that New Order didn't deliver in the way they wanted.

On Factory, New Order were a contemporary band. On London, they were not. Hellbent doesn't change a thing.

Brotherhood out take? I cant hear it myself. Apart from BLT all the tracks from that album where loud bass, loud guitars, not much pop synths, badly recorded vocals and not very polished production.

I think I heard Hellbent about 50 times already and everytime the song finishes I am like WOW, what a great song.

I don't think that people necessarily dislike the music per se, it's just in the last 15 years the ratio of wank to wow has been a constant disappointment (not totally convinced that makes total sense, but you get the idea)... In my opinion, there has been some great stuff from the London era, some mediocre tracks and one or two piles of utter shite... Others will feel that the mediocre/crap dominates... What many people will agree on, is that for a band who have been so innovative, so jaw-droppingly amazing (at times) in the past (yet capable of being abysmal in the next breath), the returns have (understandably, I suppose) diminished over the years... But we still live in hope (presumably because we know that never being the most commercially minded), that there may well be something worth hearing languishing in the archives... For me, that hope, that chance, however faint, is what keeps me coming back to the band and here... So I don't particularly care for Hellbent, other people may well do, and I'm glad there are, just as I am that people like The Light, even though neither really do anything for me... I'll happily talk about what a great track Krafty is, if it'd help...

So, anyway I suppose what I'm trying to say is I think it's disappointment rather than disliking that leads to some of the comments here...

You have my sympathies:) Listening to it for the second time I like the chorus but the chords in the verses sound over familiar but overall if it had been on Get Ready instead of Slow Jam it would have fitted in well,sounds like it came from the same sessions as Brutal alright which would mean it was recorded in 1999-2000? when they were still feeling their way back into things. As for moaning about New Order,well it's theraputic I guess. New Order have been always known for their honesty,maybe it's a Manchester thing,I wouldn't know,I've never been there.

Anyone else think the synth is a bit like Are Friends Electric?
