The very first book in the series is about Joy Division / New Order... 45 different musicians and writers have contributed to it."

Right now we have opened new forums that are not yet linked to the front page, you can access them via the menu and make sure you register again. NewOrderOnline has been attacked by spammers in recent time and we need to fix those issues, and we also want to make sure the community can publish news as they come. Stay tuned!
New Order's tribute to Ian Curtis, "Elegia", was originally released on their 1985 album Low-Life in a truncated form. But now, the full 18-minute version is being released on vinyl, as Dummy reports. The track is out on a 3-track 12" EP via Slow to Speak and available via Dope Jams. The 12" also includes a Peel Session take on "5-8-6" off Power, Corruption & Lies, as well as Movement's "The Him", which was also written for Ian Curtis.
It's been announced that Blur will headline the closing ceremony at the Olympic Games in London on August 12. The BT London Live Closing Ceremony, taking place in Hyde Park, features a "Best of the British" lineup that also includes New Order and the Specials.
CD featuring 3 remixes by the fantastic Factory Floor, whoʼve collaborated with Gillian and Stephen since first meeting in early 2010. Part of the Manchester International Festival, and taking place in the Festival’s Pavilion Theatre (on Albert Square), True Faith celebrates the work of Manchester’s established and emerging talent with a very special series of gigs and talks curated by DJ and writer Dave Haslam. ‘Close Up’ is a short series of exclusive onstage conversations which see Dave Haslam interview Manchester icons Bernard Sumner of Joy Division and New Order, music writer and broadcaster Paul Morley and the former Magazine/Bad Seeds bass player and soundtrack composer Barry Adamson.
Hacienda Records can confirm the release of The Light’s debut EP “1102 / 2011” on Monday 9th May 2011 with the four track EP taking its name from the palindromic recording date of 11th February 2011 at Blueprint Studio, Salford. “Pictures In My Mind” was an unfinished Joy Division track which was unearthed by the band’s “bootleg society” from a rehearsal tape stolen in 1977, setting it between Warsaw and Unknown Pleasures. The effervescent and punky tune has been completed for the first time by Hooky And The Light for this release. The Light’s guest vocalist Rowetta performs three of the classic Joy Division tracks which she has been singing live with the band over the past year, “Insight, “New Dawn Fades” and “Atmosphere”, delivering intensely passionate performances across all three tracks. Videos for “Pictures In My Mind” and “Atmosphere” have been shot and will be made available a week prior to the release on Monday 2nd May 2011.

George is releasing a new single: “True Faith”. Above that, George has generously made the decision to donate ALL money from the new single to Comic Relief! Arranged and produced by George himself, “True Faith” was a hit for New Order in 1987 and was written by Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris, Gillian Gilbert and Stephen Hague. The writers have followed George’s lead and are also very kindly donating their proceeds to Comic Relief along with the publishers’ mechanical royalties. The single, plus an instrumental version of the track as a b-side, will be available digitally on March 13 and physically on March 14. Finally, a hard copy of Freebass’ debut album, which was previously released as digital download only, will be released in the latter part of September this year. Maybe this was due to fans expressing their preference of holding a physical copy in their hands or maybe it was planned all along. Whatever prompted the decision, those who enjoy having a physical copy won’t be disappointed. The release is a double CD at normal release price, featuring on the first disc, the ten digitally released tracks plus another three previously unreleased bonus tracks, “Bury Me Standing,” “Sister Surrender,” and “I’m A Believer.” On the second CD, we’re treated to instrumental versions of all the tracks on the first half of this release. A “reasonably priced limited edition for once?” Quite possibly. One ends up with 26 tracks after all. The artwork is pretty good too.
Manchester's All-Star Bassist Super-group Freebass, consisting of New Order's Peter Hook, The Stone Roses' Mani Mounfield and The Smiths' Andy Rourke, only weeks before the release of their LP, have stated that they are no longer set to continue as a band. Freebass' debut album, It's A Beautiful Life, is scheduled to be released in Europe September 20th by Essential and worldwide December 7th by American indie label 24 Hour Service Station. The band's debut EP, Two Worlds Collide, released only a month ago through a partnership with Hook's new label Hacienda Records and 24 Hour Service Station, features vocals from The Charlatans UK singer Tim Burgess, Pete Wylie, Howard Marks & Hook. The official statement issued by Freebass on Sept 9th reads, "Recent events have made Freebass entirely unviable as a band, and with this in mind, it has been decided that the project should be shelved, rather than placed on hiatus while members pursue their other interests. The band would like to take the opportunity to thank friends and fans for their support and interest, especially on the UK tour in June 2010. We also hope that people will enjoy the album, which concludes five years of work and treat it on its own merits. No third parties were involved or harmed in the break up."
Bad Lieutenant have recorded a track in aid of youth homelessness charity Centrepoint, as part of a compilation album called ‘Key to Change’. The album is made up of covers of songs from 1969 (the year that Centrepoint was founded) by today’s artists and Bad Lieutenant has done a fantastic cover of ‘In the Ghetto’. http://centrepoint.fairsharemusic.com/release/1969-key-to-change

With air travel out of the UK and Europe still at a standstill, and conditions predicted to deteriorate further due to the huge cloud of volcanic ash from Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull, the members of Bad Lieutenant and their management have come to the disappointing decision to cancel their Chicago and New York dates that had been set to take place on Monday, April 19 and Wednesday, April 21, respectively. “We’re stuck in Manchester,” said Bad Lieutenant’s Bernard Sumner. “We were hoping that conditions might change at the last minute and we’d be able to come and play for our fans. Obviously, this is a situation out of everyone’s control, and we are crushed that we won’t be coming to America for these dates.” Since British air space was closed on Thursday morning, the band also canceled their planned appearances in San Francisco last night and today at the Coachella festival near Palm Springs, CA. Refunds will be available for ticket holder at the point of purchase.
Former New Order bassist Peter Hook & patron of the charity: “To see so many indie bands interested in replicating the work of New Order as a tribute to Tony and to help raise funds for Salford Foundation Trust so that it can continue its fine work with young people is just fantastic. Through the Trust’s Tony Wilson Award, young people can access grants that can help them to pursue music, drama, dance and the creative arts.”

Funny fact of the day: New Order, despite having very few music videos for a band, have 2 videos directed by Academy Award winning directors. The Perfect Kiss, directed by Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs) and as of last night, Touched by the Hand of God directed by Katheryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) You can almost add a 3rd one with Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) who used Temptation as a full movie element in his movie Trainspotting.
http://theothertwo.co.uk http://www.myspace.com/theothertwoandyou http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Other-Two/240410532611 LTM present expanded CD editions of two albums by The Other Two, the electronic pop duo comprising Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert of New Order. The Other Two came into being in 1990, spurred by Morris and Gilbert’s work on television soundtracks, and a temporary lull in New Order activity in which Electronic and Revenge also released albums. First album The Other Two & You features ten original synth-pop gems produced by the duo with Stephen Hague, with surprise vocals by Gillian, showcased on the singles Tasty Fish and Selfish. Originally scheduled for release on Factory Records in late 1992, The Other Two & You was delayed by the collapse of the label, and instead emerged on London in 1993. This expanded edition features all tracks from the original Factory/London album as well as six bonus tracks from companion singles, including superb mixes by Moby, Pascal Gabriel and Boys Own.
Peter Hook - legendary bass-slinger with two of the most influential bands in British pop music history, Joy Division and New Order – has always been out there on his own somehow, as an artist, an icon and as the architect of his own oblivion. Having recently reinvented himself as a respected DJ, author and raconteur, Hooky tours intimate UK theatres this April / early May with Howard Marks in a conversational, musical and audience based show that sees the duo open up about their rock and roll shenanigans and pasts. Clutching some cherished memories and rock memorabilia, the celebrated musician, scribe and mouthpiece will be fessing up, pouring forth and telling all to Howard Marks, including the tragi-comic tale of the Manchester nightclub, The Hacienda, and the two seminal groups that paid for it. Hooky will also be playing various bass numbers, be open to a Q&A with audience members and plans to bring along unseen footage of Joy Division, New Order, The Hacienda, various out-takes from Michael Winterbottom’s 24 Hour Party People. Hello Fans, The highly anticipated new album, Never Cry Another Tear, is NOW available HERE exclusively through Amazon MP3, for only $2.99. Purchase now as this deal will only be available for 24 hours! We hope you enjoy! - The Bad Lieutenant Team
As a New Order fan, you have to have mixed feelings when you are about to listen to Bad Lieutenant's first LP Never Cry Another Tear (released in UK on October 5th), you're sure you won't like it because it's not New Order and wish for them to come back, but then you watch the video for Sink or Swim, the album opener and first single off the album (which you can view here and suddenly it looks like it's New Order circa 2005 with the obvious missing bass god. And this is what you get from listening to the album, you find yourself expecting Hooky's bass at specific places in songs and it's nowhere to be found or it's replaced by guitar and you know it would have been amazing featuring Hooky instead. But, we had that feeling earlier with Electronic material, so it's not new for the New Order fan, while Monaco was Hooky's bass, and as close to Bernard Sumner's vocal David Potts can be, he's not Bernard Sumner, and it's nothing against David which I met and talked with when we collaborated on the Community tribute project. Overall, Never Cry Another Tear is exactly like all material coming from Bernard Sumner, you are not sure if you enjoy it, but the more you listen to it, the more you actually enjoy it. It's always hard to detect the input of other band members Phil Cunningham and Jake Evans, as it seems every song in there could have been written by New Order, but that was also the case with Johnny Marr's work with Electronic, we never really how which percentage is Bernard Sumner, but that album has obviously his touch all over it. You can't be a Manchester legend and let the others drive the show! For the New Order fan, if you followed the band on their UK tour like I did in 2006, you will maybe remember Jake Evans from the support band Rambo and Leroy, which was supporting New order in Wolverhampton. Many of us were in the pub at that time sadly.

FAC 51 The Haçienda architect Ben Kelly, the design team of Ben Cox and Bill Holding at Morph have collaborated with the full approval and support of original owner Peter Hook to produce two separate, limited edition art prints of the original FAC 51 The Haçienda which are to be launched at Buy Art Fair at Urbis, Manchester from the 24th to 27th September 2009. The prints will subsequently be exhibited at the Zoo Art Fair in London from 16th to 19th October. At both exhibitions, they are exclusive to the Paul Stolper stand.
There is no official release date yet, but the 4 tracks EP will be: You Don't Know This About Me (with Tim Burgess) Milky Way Is Our Playground (with Pete Wylie) Dark Starr (with Howard Marks) Live Tomorrow You Go Down (Peter Hook vocals). The EP is called Two Worlds Collide and will be out on Hacienda Records. The tracks with Gary Briggs will be released as an LP at a later date.
ISBN 978-1-84737-135-5 Release Date: 5th October 2009 Many aspects of this book will be familiar to so many people, from the startling danger tape-design cover, taken from Ben Kelly's Hacienda Club design, to the characters involved in the whole story. Familiar, but certainly not boring. It will be of great interest to fans of the Hacienda, New Order, Factory, the club scene in general... and quite possibly to Greater Manchester Police and HM Inspector of Taxes. If asked three years ago who might have written a book with such a title, you'd probably be thinking of a few names, such as Mick Middles, Paul Morley, Claude Flowers, even David Nolan. Although Claude Flowers was one of those who suggested that the book be written, it was Peter Hook (Joy Division/New Order/Revenge/Monaco/Freebass) who was persuaded to take on the task. After reading it from cover to cover, it becomes apparent that he was not only the obvious choice, but also the best. Afterall, Hooky spent more time at the Hacienda and the Dry Bar than most and is therefore better qualified to comment, even if, at his own admission, much of the time spent there was slightly blurred by "overindulgence". http://www.fac51thehacienda.com

Peter Hook's "The Hacienda - How Not To Run A Club" and "Hacienda Acid House Classics" compliled and mixed by Hooky released this October with nationwide UK signing tour Oct 3rd to Oct 10th. A superclub before the term even existed, FAC 51 The Hacienda lasted fifteen years as the Mancunian musical institution, forming the epicentre of the city’s dynamic music, clubs and bands scene throughout the 80’s and 90’s. Now, some dozen years after misfortune, misjudgements and misbehaviour caused the ground-breaking Whitworth Street West venue to sadly close its doors on the dream, the characters and culture that created The Hacienda have ensured its legendary status, longevity, and appeal.
The song is now available on the official myspace page of the group. http://www.myspace.com/badlieutenantmusic Enjoy!

Sam Harrison at Aurum has acquired World English Language rights from Matthew Hamilton at Aitken Alexander Associates to James Nice’s Shadowplayers: The Rise and Fall of Factory Records. The book will be the first definitive account of Factory Records, perhaps the most radical and innovative label in British pop history, and will draw on the author's professional association with many of the key players - some of whom rarely speak publicly - as well as contemporary sources and previously unpublished documents. Published in Spring 2010 to coincide with the 30th anniversary of era-defining single
Bad Lieutenant formed in 2007 with New Order’s Bernard Sumner (guitar and vocals) alongside Phil Cunningham (guitar) and Jake Evans (guitar and vocals). We can now confirm that they have completed their long awaited debut LP “Never Cry Another Tear” which is set for worldwide release on 5th October 2009 on Triple Echo Records. The album features sounds that have helped make New Order such a treasured, innovative force over the past three decades, but also featured is a brand new voice from exotic Macclesfield, Jake Evans. The new album centre’s around crisp, streamlined, 21st century guitar music – underscored by keyboards and occasional melodica. The record includes Sumner’s seemingly effortless melodic invention, but now these familiar joys blend with vocals and the talented guitar work of Jake Evans. “This album is very important to me,” says Bernard. “We’ve worked hard on it and I’m proud of it. It’s also important because it gives people the chance to hear a gifted new singer and guitar player who I think’s really talented.” Together, the band have spent over a year writing, recording and mixing the album near Manchester, which features additional musicians including Alex James (Blur) and Stephen Morris (New Order and Joy Division) on several recordings. Song titles and live dates will be announced in due course. The live band will include Stephen Morris on drums and Tom Chapman on bass. A debut single, “Sink or Swim” is expected to be released prior to the LP, on Monday 21st September 2009. “There is some continuity to the music I’ve made in the past,” says Bernard. “But this is very different – because different people are playing on it. This is just how I now want to make music – it feels right to me and I hope at least a few other people feel the same.” http://www.myspace.com/badlieutenantmusic

Hello everybody, It's that time of the year again, as you might be aware right now, November-December-January-February are low usage months for NOOL, which means those months can not count on Google ads revenues to pay the hosting bills since we didn't meet the minimal requirements for payments. Hence why each year, we are looking for people willing to help put some money into the NOOL server fund and help pay the bills for those 4 difficult months... usually things will get better around April, but we never know, with lack of New Order information and releases, we might have to scale down the website eventually. The bills are around 100$ USD per month for NOOL, so you know. How can you help? Well, obviously MONEY... so you can help 2 ways. Direct Donation via PayPal - amount is up to you. Buy Community 2 - it's worth it. Thank you once again for your help, I usually put the name of the donators if they want online on the "About Us" page, but that is up to you... :thumb:
WHAT: Signing session WHERE: HMV London, 150 Oxford Street W1 WHEN: Monday 11th February at 6.00 pm Director of 2007’s biopic ‘Control’ - Anton Corbijn – celebrates the release of the film on DVD and the book, ‘In Control’, with a signing session at HMV’s flagship store on Oxford Street in London’s West End on Monday 11th February. Anton will be at the store from 6.00 pm to meet fans and sign copies of the DVD and the book which are released the same day. 'Control', which has been nominated for three BAFTA Awards - including ‘Best British Film’- details the life of the troubled young musician, Ian Curtis, who forged a new kind of music out of the punk rock scene of 1970s Britain, and the band Joy Division, which he headed from 1977 to 1980. It also deals with his rocky marriage and extramarital affairs, as well as his increasingly frequent seizures, which were thought to contribute to the circumstances leading to his suicide on the eve of Joy Division's first U.S. tour.
Following rave reviews for his stand out performance as Ian Curtis in CONTROL, Sam Reiley has been nominated for the Orange Rising Star Award at this year's BAFTA's. TO FIND OUT MORE AND REGISTER YOUR VOTE, CLICK HERE To pre-order your copy of Control, out February 11 in the UK: Amazon UK
Joy Division are the perennial cult post-punk band. Four young men with weight on their shoulders, the drama and tension of their music remains unsurpassed. Paul Morley was their contemporary and Northern English compatriot, who wrote extensively and evocatively of the ‘mood, atmosphere and ephemeral terror’ that enveloped this unique group and their doomed front man, vocalist Ian Curtis. These are his complete writings on Joy Division, both contemporary and retrospective, forming a close personal account of the band’s brief, turbulent history: from primitive beginnings as Manchester punk band Warsaw, to Curtis’ near-fatal epileptic seizure following a London concert, and his tragic suicide in May 1980. As Morley says, ‘The more that time moves on, the more I have to say about them.’ In addition to collecting all of the author’s journalistic writings on the band from the late 1970s/early 1980s, this unique work includes retrospective essays on the significance of the group, the post-punk era zeitgeist and the ‘psycho-geography’ of Manchester. Contemporary elements include Morley’s articles on the background to Anton Corbijn’s acclaimed film, Control, recounting the brief life of Ian Curtis. Movingly, Morley also includes the original text that grew into his literary work Nothing, paralleling the two suicides that marked his life: those of his own father, and his young contemporary Curtis. Paul Morley is the UK’s foremost pop-cultural commentator. At New Musical Express from 1977 to 1983 he pioneered post-modernist rock journalism. He staked his claim to the 1980s as co-founder of ZTT Records and The Art of Noise, and has since become familiar to TV viewers via The Late Show, his documentary series Without Walls: The Thing Is, Richard and Judy and Newsnight Review. He has also made two albums with James Banbury as Infantjoy. His other books are Ask, a collection of his NME writing, the highly acclaimed Nothing, a meditation on the death of his father, and Words and Music: A History of Pop in the Shape of a City, a polemic extending ‘from Stockhausen to Steps’. He writes about music for the Sunday Telegraph and is critic at large for the Observer Music Monthly. Buy this book on: Amazon UK Amazon USA Amazon Canada
WHAT: Signing sessions WHERE: FOPP Earlham Street, Covent Garden, London FOPP Brown Street, Manchester WHEN: FOPP London, Friday 7th December at 6pm FOPP Manchester Wednesday 12th December at 5pm One of the UK's foremost popcultural commentators, Paul Morley celebrates the release of his new book, ‘Joy Division – Piece By Piece’ with two signing sessions at FOPP stores starting at FOPP’s Covent Garden store in London on Friday 7th December. Paul will be at the store from 6.00 pm to meet fans and sign copies of the new book. Next up, Paul visits FOPP’s Brown Street store in Manchester on Wednesday 12th December for another signing session starting at 5.00 pm. ‘Joy Division – Piece By Piece’, is a close personal account spanning as far back as the band’s early incarnation as Manchester punk outfit, Warsaw, to the release of the second Joy Division album 'Closer', after singer Ian Curtis’s tragic suicide in May 1980. The book also examines the legacy of the group, and the development of their reputation and influence in the three decades since their short, turbulent life. Paul Morley wrote extensively and evocatively of the `mood, atmosphere and ephemeral terror' that enveloped this unique group and their doomed front man, vocalist Ian Curtis. These are his complete writings on Joy Division, both contemporary and deletion made here retrospective.

The Manchester Evening News stated yesterday that there could be a possibile reunion to do a gig in the memory of Anthony Wilson. Quoting Peter Hook: "Hooky told the M.E.N: "It's very typical New Order to split up and then get back together again just like that isn't it?" Today, Peter Hook made a little correction to his interview: Can I just clear up this Manchester Evening News Article. In a conversation with Oliver Wilson about a tribute gig for his father, he asked me what the chances were of getting New Order to perform. I said, "Seeing as we have just split up, pretty slim.", he then said to me "If I could get the others to agree, would you do it?", I said "In honour of your father, I'd do anything." This means I would sell the popcorn, take the tickets, sweep up after, play bass in New Order/Joy Division/Crawling Chaos. I do wish that people would read things properly before mouthing off. I am definately going to have to learn to keep my big fat mouth shut (but I blame the bloody press!). And as Tony would say "Fuck em!"
Monaco will reform for one gig on October 28, which is a charity gig for Oxfam. It's called the Oxjam Music Festival The gig will be at the Manchester Ritz. The lineup is still to be confirmed. More info can be found on the official website: Oxjam Music Festival

KB#1 - 'Giving meaning to noise, sound becomes communication' Interview with Karl Bartos, 23 - 24 August 2007 Click here to read the german translation of this interview While listening to Electronic's 'Raise The Pressure', the thought struck me that if there was one man who would be able to shed light on so many aspects of modern music, especially electronic and multi-media, it would be the legendary Karl Bartos; guest member of 'Electronic', classically trained percussionist, keyboard player, guitarist, composer, solo artist, university lecturer and one-time member of another very famous, innovative band. As I'm not 'commissioned' to interview people for NOOL (Nic gives me the freedom to use my own initiative) I get the opportunity to interview people and bands that I like, as well as a few heroes. It's a really cool way of working, maybe too 'Factory-like' sometimes, but people have been very kind and patient in giving up their time for us. I wondered if this time I had decided to approach someone who was too big a star and that the response to my request would be, 'Sorry, he's too busy.' That wasn't the case. During two relaxed afternoons, he was good enough to give up his time. I had the very genuine pleasure of chatting with one of the most genuine, interesting and forthright people I've interviewed. Yes, it really was a chat. He's pretty damn clever too. From the very start, he'd got me sussed…
David Nolan’s first book, ‘I Swear I Was There – The Gig That Changed The World’ was very well received by both the music press and also music fans everywhere. I don’t doubt that his latest book, ‘Confusion’ will be regarded as essential reading matter for any fan of the Manchester music scene.
DAVID NOLAN HINTS CHRIS NASH MAY BE A 'TWAT' I first had contact with David Nolan via the networking site, 'MySpace'. We exchanged a few messages and a couple of weeks ago, his publisher sent me a review copy of his latest book, 'Confusion: Joy Division, Electronic And New Order Versus The World'. David kindly agreed to do a 'Q&A' interview for NewOrderOnline and his answers are detailed below. He's a very approachable gent, with a rather cheeky sense of humour. Surrounded by his children, who are on their school holidays, he still managed to reply to our questions and as anyone who has children will confirm, that shows perseverance and strength of character! What is the 'Twat' reference? Well, read the interview, but this is the basis - 'The trouble is that the first person to suggest a Wilson book now looks like a twat.' Okay, I'll stick my hand up, but if a biography of Tony Wilson is written, maybe one of the better people to write it would be David Nolan. Hopefully you'll enjoy both the questions and answers and get a better mental picture of the author of 'Confusion'. Spotlighting a short-lived yet long-influential post-punk band of the late 1970s, the feature-length documentary Joy Division will premiere at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival. The US/UK co-production is written and directed by Grammy nominee Grant Gee (Radiohead’s Meeting People Is Easy, Gorillaz’ Demon Days Live) and co-written by acclaimed journalist and writer Jon Savage (England’s Dreaming: Anarchy, Sex Pistols, Punk Rock and Beyond). The producers are Tom Astor and Tom Atencio of Hudson Productions Ltd., and Brown Owl Films’ Jacqui Edenbrow.
We have started a few BitTorrent downloads that will be going on. The first item released is the Community 2 DVD. Check often for updates. The list is available here, enjoy it and please let it seed once over so it can go faster for everybody.
Mancunian songsmith David Potts is back with his second solo single. The brand new double A-side features the cheeky, melodic, hook-filled 'Monkey In The Rain', and it's brother 'Roll Up!' which is lifted from his recent debut album features ex-cohort Peter Hook (New Order) on bass. Both uplifting, both energetic, both foot-tapping, and both head-nodding psychedelic tinged guitar pop! This single follows the recent success of his album ‘Coming Up For Air’ and the stomping debut single 'I'm The Greatest' – the reviews speak for themselves.
We interviewed David Potts and his collaborator, Paul Kehoe, both from Revenge, Monaco and now playing under the banner 'David Potts'. With an album released at the start of this year and a double 'A' sided single released this month, we thought we'd catch up with them, see how things were going and what's been happening so far. They both gave their time to appear at NOOL's 'Blue Saturday', better known as 'NewOrderOnline Day' in late 2006. We started off by putting David 'Pottsy' Potts under the spotlight…
With the upcoming release of David Potts’ new double A-sided digital single, ‘Monkey In The Rain/Roll Up!’ (also includes two extra tracks) I thought I’d have a few listens to his first solo album under his own name, released around six months ago at the end of January 2007 and give it a 'retrospective' review.
JOY DIVISION has reached the end of production. The feature length documentary, a US/UK co production, produced by Hudson Productions Ltd partners Tom Astor and Tom Atencio in association with Brown Owl Films’ Jacqui Edenbrow, is directed by Grammy nominated Grant Gee (Radiohead's Meeting People Is Easy, Director of Photography & Editor Scott Walker: 30 Century Man) and co-written by acclaimed journalist/writer Jon Savage (England's Dreaming: Anarchy, Sex Pistols, Punk Rock, and Beyond).
TV presenter Tony Wilson, one of the leading lights in the Manchester music scene, has died after suffering a heart attack while receiving cancer treatment aged 57. Mr Wilson, who set up the Factory Records label and the Hacienda Club, was associated with groups like New Order and the Happy Mondays. He was also a reporter and presenter on TV and radio in the Manchester area. His life was depicted in the film 24 Hour Party People. He had been suffering from kidney cancer. Mr Wilson was surrounded by family at his when he passed away. A spokesman for Christie Hospital in Manchester said: "Tony Wilson died peacefully at 6.05pm this evening with his family by his bedside. "Tony was a very great supporter of the Christie and this is extremely sad news. "We would like to extend our sympathy to Tony's family." An outspoken campaigner for regional self-government in the North West, Wilson was passionate about his home city of Manchester.

Our profile disappeared from MySpace without any explanation, our fear is that this was because of the Community 2 songs, though we do own the copyrights of those songs. A source close to the band told NewOrderOnline that the news about the split is false, New Order still exists despite what New Order's bassist said. Peter Hook can leave the band, but this doesn't mean the end of New Order. We remind you that the claims of New Order's split originated from Peter Hook's blog on MySpace, apparently he didn't warn the rest of the band that were surprised about this news. Joy division were Peter and Bernard's band initially, and becoming New order the band is truly democratif and have been treated as such,. They are still a band but obviously things are being made increasingly difficult as Peter makes claims of a split. The band is right now in Cannes for the premier of the biopic Control about the life of Ian Curtis.
A few photos from Control have leaked now that the movie is at the Cannes Film Festival. Check them out here
Surprise last night at the Manchester Hard Rock Café where David Potts and Peter Hook did a benefit concert, they indeed played 5 songs, 2 from New Order, 2 from Monaco and one from Joy Division. Guests were Rowetta, who provided vocals on Insight, and our very own Jack, Hooky's son on bass. The setlist was: Insight Age of Consent Sunrise Shine What Do You Want From Me? Insight (Encore)
David Potts and Peter Hook have confirmed that they'll be sharing a stage for the first time in 7 years for the Hard Rock Café 'March on Stage' event in Manchester on Wednesday 21st March in aid of the Nordorff-Robbins Music Therapy charity. Other music industry patrons of Nordorff-Robbins - who provide UK-wide music therapy sessions for 30,000 people a year - include David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Sting and Pink Floyd. As post-Revenge duo Monaco, 'Hooky' and 'Pottsy' sold a million albums worldwide in the late '90s and created the chart hit 'What Do You Want From Me' combining instantly memorable pop sha-la-las with the trademark New Order bass sound. Monaco split in 2000 with Hook re-joining New Order and travelling the world as a superstar DJ. Potts went on to write and produce, initially as Ram and culminating in a solo album release 'Coming Up For Air' in January of this year. So could Monaco’s old sparring partners be on the verge of reforming? “Very unlikely” says Hook, “I thought I’d got rid of Pottsy and he thought he’d got rid of me but a one-off like this for Nordorff-Robbins is worth doing”. Potts agrees: “We’ll let you know if it was a good idea afterwards!”
Directed by Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn, Control is set to open in UK cinemas in March, 2 years after its American producers Orian Williams and Tom Eckhert first contacted Mojo to discuss their new project. Eckert has spoken about their lengthy effort to get the film off the ground, having optioned the rights to 'Touching from a distance' in the late 90's. ''I don't think there are many really great stories out there.'' said Todd. ''But this is one of them.''

Today mark the milestone of the 6th year of NewOrderOnline.com, which opened on December 1st, 2000. Well, this site would have died a long time ago without the people who are listed on this page and those who are not listed and who contributed. In the last 2 years, the help of WenOrder has been appreciated a lot, especially for the design, the shop (which pays the bills as well as the Google ads and help the site to remain free)... Thanks to the moderators team who do a decent job despite some people hating them with passion. And of course, thanks to Bernard, Peter, Steve and Phil... as well as Andy Robinson and Rebecca Boulton, who are giving us a lot of support despite what some people think... What to expect for next year? Seems the only main issue will be the release of Control, and its soundtrack... And well, thanks to Sebastien, without him it would still be the same old static website ;) And thanks to the 14,795,933 visitors! :thumb:

A word from Alan Wise: For New Order fans who dislike paying 20% of concert ticket to "agents" We "Wisemoves" do sell them direct to fans for £30 all in, not £32.50 as you have it, £30 being what we consider a fair price. But its just by post. Send cheque or Posta Order to "Wise Moves " payable to me T A Wise, and enclose a s.a.e. for return. I will send them striaght out. If your che que bounces we will call you up on stage at the show for the "Hooky" Bass punishment, as the security got at Liverpool. He weilds that bass like a claymore. We have no seats just standing tickets, any number you like, for £30.I consider the convenience and insurance of buying through an agent too dear and this £30 by post idea was thought up for regular fans. But only 6 people have used it yet !!! T Wise. "Wise Moves " 26 Lockett Gardens Salford Manchetster M3 6BJ

Members of NewOrderOnline, don't forget to post your reviews of the Liverpool gig in our Ceremony forum, many people did. Watch closely soon as our photographer Dave Hibell will release the exclusive NewOrderOnline pictures of this gig. The setlist was: Love Will Tear Us Apart, Crystal, Regret, 24 Hours, Krafty, Working Overtime, Transmission, Your Silent Face, Waiting For The Sirens' Call, Turn, Bizarre Love Triangle, True Faith, Temptation, Perfect Kiss, Blue Monday, Ceremony, Shadowplay.
New Order will be live on October 9 in Bournemouth. It's a seaside magical mystery tour, coaches will be available from Manchester, Portmouth, Southampton, Plymouth and 2 other pick up. Bourenmouth International Centre is plush and large. They intend to stage a special gig like in the old days and a 30th Anniversary show since the start of Warsaw and the teaming up of Bernard, Steve and Hooky. It won't be like the mainstream tour shows but a special one.. more of a party atmosphere, with an after show party with live band at the Opera House "Gabrielle's Wish" probably or another ex Rob's records or Factory Band. Perhaps something dancier.
Tim Jauncey (oldMonkey) and Alex S. (Big Clive) take us backstage at the Athens Ejekt Festival gig New Order did on June 3rd and give us a brand new interview with a lot of questions real fans wanted to ask.

Interview done by Mil for NewOrderOnline.com The punk movement of late 70s Manchester was infectious. Rebellion was the order of the day: and music was the weapon of choice. The ability to play an instrument was secondary when forming a band – above all you needed spirit. Joy Division were like everyone else, making it up as they were going along, learning how to play, write and perform. So how do you show that in film? Simple. Apply the same principle to the film – capture the spirit above all. "I hope the film will be emblematic of Joy Division’s approach to music," says Michael Shamberg, co-producer of the new Joy Division film Enigmatic. "The spirit should be there. To try to represent something your work has to reflect the essence of the source." "Punk was a reaction against the overproduced mainstream which becomes nothing more than an opiate to the masses. Rock music should be like good poetry – something which both celebrates and challenges. is like a friend’s response to being offered a tribute to his work: ‘Being celebrated in times like ours is like giving autographs on the deck of the Titanic.’ "

According to the brazilian journal Zero Hora, New Order has been confirmed to play in Porto Alegre on May 17th on the Pepsi stage. We don't have confirmation from the band yet though.
Sam Riley has been cast as lead singer Ian Curtis and Alexandra Maria Lara as his lover Annik on music video director Anton Corbijn’s Control, his fact-based debut feature on UK post-punk band Joy Division. It is a first big role for newcomer Riley – the troubled Curtis was in his early 20s when he committed suicide in 1980 – whereas Lara played Hitler’s secretary in Downfall and has just finished work on Francis Ford Coppola’s Youth By Youth alongside Bruno Ganz and Tim Roth. It was already known that Samantha Morton would play Deborah Curtis, who wrote the book on which Matt Greenhalgh’s script is based. Curtis will also get a co-producer credit, as will former Joy Division manager and Factory Records founder Tony Wilson, the subject of the biopic 24 Hour Party People. The producers are Orian Williams and Todd Eckert from Claraflora. The Control team is still closing finance but hopes to being shooting in mid-2006 in Manchester, Macclesfield and other areas of England. The film’s title was inspired by the classic Joy Division song She’s Lost Control. New Order, the band that succeeded Joy Division, will be recording new tracks for the film and the soundtrack album will feature a number of re-recorded Joy Division songs. Corbijn has worked on U2, Depeche Mode, Nirvana and Metallica videos and is also known for his photographs of such musicians as the late Miles Davis, R.E.M., David Bowie and Elvis Costello. Note: Picture by Anton Corbijn courtesy of Claraflora.
Our photograph at the event, David Hibell, took a lot of pictures for us, you can see most of them in the concert page or in the gallery page Enjoy, and feel free to comment them in our forums.
Apparently they are writing the music for the new Robbie Coltrane series of Cracker which is currently being filmed in Manchester. Heard this on Revolution Radio at lunchtime today when Stephen and Gillian had popped into the radio studio and were plugging their first ever show on Revolution which is at 4.00pm on Sunday 15th January for three hours. Coltrane himself actually asked them to write the music for the series so he must be a fan of the Other Two.
Is it the 4th singles of Waiting For The Sirens' Call or the 2nd single of Singles, not really known, but nevertheless NewOrderOnline has learned that promos of Turn are currently being produced and they do have artwork done by Saville Associates. Warner confirmed us that it will be released on February 20. The artwork is supposed to feature a tern.

Do you have a band or do you feel you can do a pretty enjoyable version of a New Order classic? If you are good enough, you might want to enter NewOrderOnline's Community 2 competition. In 2004, we have released a tribute album under the name of Community, in 2006 we are doing it again, once again your unique opportunity to have your song recorded on a CD. But obviously, this project will be bigger and better than the previous one, so we're pleased to announced our first guest star on Community, David Potts, who will submit a cover of The Village which will be the song used for our remix and video competition, and we won't forget the sleeve competition. This project is indeed, a community project, so get involved! All details on http://community.neworderonline.com, the spinoff website dedicated to this competition.

Veteran UK alternative band New Order visited Oakland's Henry J Kaiser Arena last Friday in support of their latest album, "Waiting For The Siren's Call". Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris have been performing as New Order since 1980. The original lead singer of their previous band commited suicide on May 18th of that year. From late 1978 to early 1980, that band, Joy Division, and it's legendary lead singer and songwriter Ian Curtis developed an intense underground following for it's deceptively uplifting lyrics and musical approach. The deceptiveness was in the way that at first glance the music and words seemed gloomy; as grayed in industrial bleakness as the Manchester, England area where the four band members were from. But in reality, Curtis' painfully honest reportage of isolated despair served as a communal catharsis. Joy Division's was a new kind of post punk music, stripped down to minor key guitar rhythm, moaning bass melody, and a spare drum line that, all together, sounded as majesty from on high. A black-winged rescue that was desperately needed to carry fragile sensitivies away from the angry noise of loneliness to the calm trustworthy din of aloneness. As effectively empathetic as Curtis was, he must have required a sensitvity that had to have been dangerous to live with. When it became time to open up all over again to a new continent of people, Curtis' could not continue. At the dawn of Joy Division's first tour of the states, Curtis hanged himself, leaving bassist Hook, guitarist Sumner, and drummer Morris to carry on. They changed the band name to New Order and added Morris' girlfriend Gillian Gilbert. 25 years hence they have gone from reluctant innovative cult heroes, to reluctant icons of cross cultural dancefloor music, to old blokes at last comfortable in their reluctant shoes. Ian Curtis actually had a great sense of humor and would have loved to have been around to have a laugh at what his punk mates have turned into: A world famous dance band filling arenas from time to time with bright catchy techno standards. New Order has always continued to bounce off the edge of innovation from time to time, but these days there's more bounce than edge. Remnants of the formula remains; bassist Hook still carries the melody, now with the faithful wailing of a happy old dog. Barney Sumner can still be counted on for his rhythm guitar lines, less stinging than finger wagging but still adept as a counter -melodic compliment to Hook. And if you saw the movie about the story of the bands first record label, "24-Hour Party People", you know what is meant mean by Morris still happily giving the impression that he is drumming on the roof of the recording studio until someones runs up to tell him to stop, that the rest of band has gone home.
New Order's management gave us the right to take pictures at the last concerts New Order did, the full set of the New York and Chicago concerts have been posted. It was a little earlier than expected, but the website welcomed it's 4th million visitor between May 4th and 5th. Congratulations to everybody, aiming for the 5th!
NewOrderOnline official pre-gig meet up at TGIF near the Hammerstein ballroom. Then it's the New Order concert at the Hammerstein Ballroom. Followed by the official New Order party at the Hiro Ballroom where Hooky will be doing a set.
"It's awesome. Totally rules." Jeff Tweedy, leader of Wilco, was squinting out at tens of thousands of fans. "And I don't even like festivals. But this one's cool." It had better be something. Every year for six years running, a small town's worth of alt-rock fans pay for the privilege of driving hours into the desert (and, depending on traffic, a few more hours into the parking lot), all so they can attend the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. As you might imagine, the phrase "music and arts" is slightly misleading, since it implies some sort of parity; surely no one forked over $150 (the price of two-day admission) so they could gape at a herd of hand-painted trash cans.
If you are in Chicago, here is the suggested schedule where you can meet people from the website. Monday May 2nd, make sure to stop at the Smart Bar for Peter Hook's DJ set. Tuesday May 3rd, there is a pre-gig meetup at the Green Mill next to the Aragon Ballroom, then it's New Order time at the Aragon Ballroom. After the show, be sure to go at Neo for the official NewOrderOnline.com after party, there will be a few sets from Chicago's finest DJs and a lot of give away of New Order material. Click here for more information about the after party

"Waiting For The Sirens' Call," the long-awaited album by progressive dance-rock pioneers New Order, has been set for release April 26th, 2005, on Warner Bros. Records. Already a smash in the U.K., "Sirens'" sets a new high watermark for one of our generation's most influential bands: "Originators of a sound imitated by a million, younger, better-coiffed dance-rock outfits, New Order may be the most ripped-off electronic act since, uh, Joy Division," said GQ Magazine. Time Magazine put it this way: "They have evolved their trademark mix of bass, synthesizer and pop hooks by embracing and perfecting their own legacy." In conjunction with the release of their long-awaited new album, New Order will perform a select series of U.S. dates including an appearance at the Coachella Music & Arts Festival, May 1st, 2005, in Indio, California. Additional dates include April 29th at the Henry J. Kaiser Arena in Oakland, California; May 3rd at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Illinois; and May 5th at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. New Order has also made available remixes of the album's debut single "Krafty" exclusively on iTunes. Both "The Glimmers 12" Extended Remix" and "The Glimmers Dub Version" of the song can be heard only on the music site for four weeks beginning March 22nd before being released to all digital music outlets. A third "Krafty" remix, the "Phone Reality Remix," will be available at iTunes beginning April 26th. The first album of new material since 2001's "Get Ready" and the follow-up to their 2002 boxset "Retro," "Waiting For The Sirens' Call" features the groundbreaking Manchester, U.K., band in the studio with producers Stephen Street (Blur, The Smiths), John Leckie (Pink Floyd, Stone Roses) and Stuart Price (Madonna). Key tracks include the above-mentioned single "Krafty," "Jetstream" (with vocals by New Order founding member Bernard Sumner and Scissor Sister Ana Matronic), "Morning Night And Day," "I Told You So," "Working Overtime," "Hey Now What You Doing," and the title track. Over the course of their 28-year career New Order has forever changed the face of pop music. "Love Will Tear Us Apart," which they recorded as Joy Division, has been chosen as one of The Brits 25 best songs ever written while "Blue Monday" is the world's best-selling 12" single of all time. New Order will be available for a select number of interviews only. After starring at the Easter weekend Happy Mondays reunion gigs at London's Brixton Academy, Baker commented on how he helped spark Hooky's interest in DJing, "Barney and Hooky DJ'd at my Return To New York event in London back in February 2003. Barney chose and played the whole set, they are competitive and it left Hooky thinking, 'I could do better than that !'". Baker also revealed plans for him and Hooky to DJ together at this years Glastonbury Festival. Last week, Baker opened a new American styled bar-restuarant, 'Harlem', within minutes walk of the Brixton Academy. Situated opposite the Ritzy cinema, Harlem has a cool vibe in keeping with a guy like Baker and is well worth checking out for either a pre-gig NY steak or after show come-down drinks. This venue compliments Baker's other diner on the Westbourne Grove, West London.

Legendary Manchester band New Order have taken the reins of City Life magazine and become Editors for the week. In this week's issue (out 30th March), Peter Hook and Bernard Sumner and co bring readers the literary treats of a review of Manchester restaurant, Establishment, and their take on the new book on the history of post punk by Simon Reynolds. Plus the tables are turned as they get to play music critics, reviewing the album of the week. There is also a full interview with the band about their hotly anticipated album Waiting For The Sirens' Call. Perhaps more famous for their arguments, it seems Hooky and Sumner have buried the hatchet, although they didn't actually do the interview together! New Order have been going strong for years and years and in our exclusive interview, Sumner reveals that he sees it as a complement that so many new bands try to emulate the New Order sound: "...if a band now cites us as an influence, I'm glad - it's a very flattering thing. But I don't think those bands are carbon copies. The Killers, for example - their last single was really good". City Life is Manchester's premier weekly listings magazine. Telling you what's on and where in this great city... every day of the week. You'll never be stuck for something to do. With over 20 years experience, nobody rivals City Life. It's Manchester. Read It. Live It. For further information please contact: Rachel Spiller, Marketing Executive, Tel: +44-(0)161-211-2191

Off the Menu Entertainment and Warner Bros. in association Entertainment Weekly and Virgin Atlantic Airways are kick starting the 2005 Winter Music Conference in South Beach (Miami) with a massive album launch party for New Order on March 22nd at Mansion nightclub. Manchester’s finest ever band, New Order, return with their new, hotly anticipated album, “WAITING FOR THE SIRENS’ CALL”. Showcasing New Order’s unique ability to both shake the dance floor and rock the hardest. The new album is for everyone, its eleven songs take in influences as diverse as electro, rock, dancehall and punk, all bound together by New Order’s cool romance, diamond-hard modernity and wild, unparalleled musicality. The first single, “KRAFTY”, is bass-driven, machine-like, ridiculously catchy, and considered by the band to be one of the best tracks they’ve ever made. The album will be officially released on March 28th through London Records. This is no ordinary album launch though, because the band specially requested the rebellious visionaries from Off the Menu Entertainment (OTM) to plan their South Beach album launch party for opening night of the Winter Music Conference, March 22nd. “We wanted to plan an event that would allow New Order to preview their new work to the masses while still maintaining an edgy indie vibe. Mansion turned out to be the perfect venue for the expected big turnout, and overlaying the event with the legendary party brand Return to New York really sets us apart from anything else in South Beach” explains Richard Spears, OTM’s Co-founder/ Head of UK & Europe. New Order’s legendary producer and co-founder of the acclaimed Return to New York party series, Arthur Baker will DJ New Order’s greatest hits. The highlight of the night will feature the band’s charismatic bassist Peter Hook (Hooky) performing a DJ set of the new album along with other notable DJ talent that will be in town for the WMC.

Legs akimbo and driving riffs, bass slung so low it almost scrapes the ground, it could only be the God-like genius of New Order's Peter Hook. In the 28 years since they began as Joy Division, they've gone through love and hate and boom and bust as Factory's Tony Wilson spent their cash. But the band's appetite remains fierce, with a new single, Krafty, out today and an album on the way. There was a time when it looked like you'd never do more New Order. Now we've had two albums in a couple of years. What changed? It's funny - it's a bit like a family at Christmas. You don't see them for ages and then you get there and just click back into things. While we were apart, we went through some pretty bad stuff and we were finished. But we sorted out all the problems with what happened with Factory and the Hacienda and were suddenly free of it. It enabled us to look at things more calmly. We all met up when our manager, Rob Gretton, was sick - God rest his soul. When we got together, we realised we'd healed.

Waiting For The Sirens Call - God-Like Genius? Okay, I'm biased perhaps, because I've been a New Order fan since their first gig, but most of us 'old timers' can also be hugely critical - check out some of the messages people have posted on NewOrderOnline.com about 'Republic', 'World In Motion', 'Get Ready' and various other tracks/albums they've had personal gripes about. Believe me, if I don't like something, I'll say so - I'm now resigned to joining the ranks of the 'Grumpy Old Men'. Some bands release singles where new listeners think, 'Now, THAT was a good song!' Other bands release tracks where the listeners think, 'Oh, that was definitely So and So...' New Order are a band that consistently make listeners think both. For me, one of the most interesting things about 'Waiting For The Sirens' Call (is the apostrohe in the right place?) is that most tracks somehow contain hints of previous New Order releases - the whole thing seems like a combination of 'Brotherhood', 'Technique' and 'Get Ready' and that's certainly not a bad thing - this album is like most of its predecessors - a couple of tracks stand out from the start, then, once you hit the 'repeat' button, you start to appreciate the subleties of the rest. I know it's an overdone cliche, but this album really is a 'grower'. It has all the promising sparks of the side projects, but gels them together as a whole. One of the most pleasing aspects of this album is that Phil Cunningham seems to have slotted in seamlessly - he'll never be Gillian (beacuase she's irreplaceable) but he's certain to be accepted as the fifth member of New Order - and very welcome he is too, judging by the guitar work here! He lends the album a similar feel to the 'Electronic' albums with Johnny Marr of The Smiths. He also adds some surprising guitar parts that lift what may have originally been fairly 'ordinary' ideas - by New Order standards - to a whole new level. I've already heard people criticising tra

Of the 18 tracks for New Order's 'Waiting for the Sirens', seven will go into the vault for future use. "We usually do just enough for an album, ten songs and it's done. The seven tracks left off 'Sirens'' are so strong that they are likely to form the basis of a future LP" says Bernard Sumner. The title track is wistful and sublime, considered by the band to be one of the best tracks they've ever made. Then there's the perfect pop of "Jetstream" (Bernard's vocals augmented by Scissor Sister Ana Matronic); the wry, hilarious regret of "Morning Night And Day," "I Told You So"'s reckless ragga lope; the Iggy stomper "Working Overtime," and the anthemic, tuneful "Hey Now What You Doing." "Waiting For The Sirens' Call" is the diverse, devastating, delicious sound of a great band at its peak. The album features multiple producers including Stephen Street (Blur, The Smiths), John Leckie (Pink Floyd, Stone Roses), Stuart Price (Madonna) and New Order themselves. Their follow-up to 2001's 'Get Ready' will be released on April 12.
Some quotes from an article on Jacques Lu Cont in the local paper this week: "He has Madonna on his speed dial and a day job in her band, and New Order liked his take on their trademark sound so much they hired him to work on their new album. Yes, life is good when you are Jacques Lu Cont. Born in Paris but bearing the far less glamorous name of Stuart Price, he moved to Britain and spent the 1990s reliving his love of the 80's, in particular Human League and New Order. He signed to dance label Wall of Sound in 1994 when he was only 17 as frontman of Les Rythmes Digitales... Price has just found himself some more high-profile friends: New Order. They heard the very New Order-esque Jacques Lu Cont remix of Gwen Stefani's What you waiting for when Stefani played it to them while New Order's Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook were working on her album. Price admits he was going for 'something more like Stevie Nicks' Stand Back' but it turned into a New Order vibe. Sumner was impressed and flattered. He rang me and said: We're finishing the New Order album and there are a couple of songs we want you to work on, so I ended up producing two tracks, Price says. One track is fairly similar in style to the Gwen mix, except it has Bernard on vocals. The other is like a great New Order pop record, like True Faith or Regret, and I got Ana Matronic from the Scissor Sisters to do vocals and it's ended up almost a duet between her and Bernard. Price says working with his heroes, New Order, was eye-opening. I realised that in basically every song I've ever written I've ripped off Bernard Sumner in every single way possible when it comes to vocal melodies. We'd go over vocal parts and I'd think, Er, that's exactly what I would have done here. All those early New Order singles like Temptation through to True Faith, as a 15 year old kid, they had such a massive impact on me without me even realising it. But Price is uninspired by the current trend to revisit the 80s.

New Order's eagerly awaited forthcoming album 'Waiting For The Sirens Call', was aired for the first time on Tuesday 11th January at The Soho Hotel in central London. The playback was hosted by the band's record company, Warner UK and offered to press and media but not for review purposes. No copies of the album or track listings were provided but a few song titles were disclosed. The Soho Hotel is an upmarket gaff tucked away on a mews in the middle of London's West End. I must have walked within 50 yards of its front door many times without ever realising it was there. Bizarrely, one of the closest boozers to the place is the Slug and Lettuce on Wardour Street, the scene of many New Order fans drinking sessions over the last couple of years. On arrival, the reception staff guided me, an uninvited guest, down to a plush bar in the Hotel's basement. A few Warner’s staffers were sitting around on red cushion strewn sofas picking at trays of food with the distinctive sound of you-know-who filling the room. The track playing, ‘Turn’, as I nervously ordered a bottle of beer from the free bar, was the one spun by Hooky at Turnmills before Xmas. It occurred to me that if I was booted out at this point I wouldn't have heard anything new!.
According to page 351 of Channel 4 Teletext, Waiting For The Sirens Call is an album of the year contender with 9 out of 11 potential singles. It's dancier than "Get Ready" with unusually sweet vocals by Bernard Sumner, notably on Waiting For The Sirens Call and post-club comedown tale Morning Night And Day. It also mentions Jetstream (with Scissor Sisters Ana matronic on vocals), saying it has a nursery rhyme chorus while the final track Working Overtime sees New Order go glam rock to astonishing effect. It also mentioned that the second single (the title track) will be released to co-incide with summer festival appearances and an April tour will soon be revealed.
2005 is a big year for New Order. Promotional copies of their upcoming single, titled Krafty will be sent to radio stations on January 24th. The single is scheduled to be released on March 7th. Their upcoming album, Waiting For The Sirens Call is scheduled to be released on March 28th in the UK. Phil Cunningham is also reported to be a full time member of New Order from now on, replacing Gillian Gilbert.
It has been confirmed to us by somebody from Teletext that New Order's publicist confirmed that the new album will be called Waiting For The Sirens Call. The first single will be released on March 14th 2005, but they still don't want to tell us which song it is. The band confirmed that Peter Saville is doing the artwork for the album. It's been rumoured that the reason why there is no apostrophe in "Sirens" is because the band couldn't agree where it should go, and Saville decided that there wouldn't be any. A promotional listening is scheduled in London next Tuesday for the press.
The yet untitled album has now an official release date, Monday, March 28th 2005. The first single off the album will be released very soon according to Warner Music.
Both Peter and Bernard will be doing a DJ set at the Arc Club in Brigthon (UK) on New Year's Eve. The night is called Holdup!, Peter Hook has been a DJ there last March. The night will start at 9om and end at 4am. Tickets are £25 and can be obtained from www.ticketweb.co.uk or by phone on 08700600100.
According to Jane Stevenson of the Toronto Star, the best song on Gwen Stefani's new solo album, Love. Angel. Music. Baby. -- released this past Tuesday -- is appropriately called The Great Thing. (Editor's note: it's called The Real Thing) Although it was co-written with Linda Perry, it sounds like vintage New Order with Peter Hook on bass and Bernard Sumner on backing vocals. Sadly, Stefani never even got to even meet the '80s music legends. "That song was a song I had written with Linda, and the version that we did was like cheese-central," the No Doubt singer told the Sun recently. "But it was based on early Madonna, New Order-y, inspiration. It was my favourite song and when I played it for (producer Nellee Hooper) I was embarrassed. That's how nerdy I thought the song was. But I knew there was a great song in it. We ended up saying, 'Wow, we can't find a home for this, production-wise.' And we went through all these different loops, and then we ended up saying, 'Well, let's go to the source. Let's see if New Order will play.' And I'd been kind of stalking those guys 'cause I wanted to write with them, but they were doing their own record and we never hooked up. But then they said they would do it. They were going to play it and then give it back to us and they would work from there (England)."
Peter Hook is unable to perform at those date due to an emergency surgury to one of his hand. We don't have any details about the severity of his injury, but on behalf of NewOrderOnline, rest well Peter!
It was revealed that one song off New Order's upcoming album will be titled Sugarcane, it's been produced and mixed by Tore Johansson.
According to Channel 4's teletext, New Order's new album will be released in February. The follow up to 2001's Get Ready is mostly produced by Stephen Street, with other song done by John Leckie and Franz Ferdinand cohort Tore Johansson. Planet Sound understands the band also worked with Kylie and Girls Aloud producer Brian Higgins on some songs, but that these weren't finished in time for the as-yet-untitled album. Meanwhile, Moby has covered Temptation for his new LP.
The remix is titled "Slow Jam Mix", with a name like that, it might be a remix done by New Order, nothing confirmed though.
A little redesign of the front page has been done, musical general news have also been added to the page, so people can read generic news as well as New Order news.
Joy Division will be one of the 10 nominees from the 80's who will go up for a public vote to be inducted into the U.K Music Hall Of Fame. The show will be broadcast on Channel 4 at 9PM on Sunday night. Whoever has the most votes (votes can only be made by phone not on the internet) will automatically be inducted.
All signs are pointing to a spring release of the upcoming New Order album, which means that a single could be issued by February. Rumour states Peter Hook himself, and several websites on the internet now lists March as the official release date for the yet untitled album. Don't take a vacation then though, it's New Order, so it'll be ready when it's be ready. Rumours also stated that one of their producer either left or have been fired, leaving the other one alone, but we don't know if it was Steven Street or John Leckie. On the other hand, if you can't wait to hear new music from New Order, their collaboration on Gwen Stefani's upcoming solo album will be available in November, we don't know which track it is now.
Peter Hook will be performing a DJ set at The North Star (venue) in the Shetland Isles on Saturday December 11th. Check out www.thenorthstar.co.uk shortly for details. Graeme Park from the Hacienda played the venue on Sep 25th and Mani follows on Oct 23rd.
Hooky's playing a two hour DJ set at our "Talkin' 'Bout An Education" night at Tom Tom Bar & Diner 207 Bath Street Glasgow. The tag line is "interesting people playing interesting records" and that pretty much sums it up (Pat Nevin and SSP leader Tommy Sheridan are booked in for Oct and Nov). It's a relaxed affair in a chilled out bar setting (no dancefloor) so it'll be a good opportunity to hear a bit of what floats Hookys boat musically. AUTHORIZED IAN CURTIS/JOY DIVISION FILM TO BE PRODUCED BY CLARAFLORA WITH COOPERATION OF DEBORAH CURTIS EXCLUSIVE OPTION GRANTED TO ORIAN WILLIAMS AND TODD ECKERT OF CLARAFLORA FOR BIOGRAPHY TOUCHING FROM A DISTANCE The exclusive option for film rights to the Ian Curtis biography “Touching From a Distance” was granted to the Los Angeles and Pittsburgh-based production company Claraflora today. The company’s principals, Orian Williams and Todd Eckert, have been working closely with author Deborah Curtis, who is the widow of the Joy Division front man who committed suicide in 1980 at the age of 23, and production of the film is expected for early 2005. Rights for the book have been among the most sought-after in the world since it was published in 1995. Curtis agreed to make the film with Claraflora after meetings in London and Manchester gave her a comfort level that the producers would be respectful to the truth of her husband’s life and legacy. The agreement was structured

Quote from the Channel 4 Teletext: New Order's new album is being produced by Stephen Street and John Leckie. Street has worked with Morrissey and Blur, while Leckie produced Radiohead's The Bends and The Stone Roses' debut. Tony Wilson told PS: "They're both excellent choices. John Leckie is great at crafting big, stupid songs, and I mean that in a good way. Stephen, I know from his work with Vini Reilly, is a fine craftsman. I hate New Order, because they're always right!"
There will be a Rob Gretton tribute gig on May 23rd, at The Ritz, Whitworth Street West, Manchester. Bands and people to attend are: A Certain Ratio / Doves (acoustic set) / Anthony H. Wilson / Dave Rofe / Graeme Park / John Dasilva / Mike Pickering / Mr Scruff There is a rumour that New Order might attend, and that they might even play there, but of course this is a rumour, but as Rob Gretton was their manager, it would be logic for them to at least attend the gig. Tickets £12.50 Plus Booking Fee Available from Piccadilly Box Office 0161 832 1111 Tickets can be bought through Ticket Line
Peter Hook will be part of a DJ gig with Shaun Ryder (of the Happy Mondays) on Thursday May 6th 2004, at the Turnmills in London (UK) Tickets are on pre-sale for 5 pounds. Call 020 7250 3409 or click here He might, who knows, play a new song again like in Brighton.

From the Factory mailing list: Greetings to all Factory Records supporters worldwide. While doing some online research recently, I discovered some information that I wanted to share, of which some of you are probably already aware. A video production company called OUTLAW 23 LTD (www.outlaw23.com), headquartered in Lytham St. Annes, England, has acquired the vast majority of the old IKON/FCL product back catalog (not including Joy Division/New Order and Durutti Column) as well an extensive library of concert footage from The Hacienda. Some of the material has already been transferred to DVD and is being marketed through affiliate Cherry Red Records...

An australian promo of Slow Jam surfaced, it was reported by Dennis Remmer, the webmaster of the Factory Discrography Web Site. This is a 1 track promo, but there is no date specified, so this promo might be from 2002. Slow Jam is used in a national publicity campaign in Australia for the new Ford Falcon, and all seems to link this promo to this ad, however the song didn't get much air play other than at JJJ. Apparently, the directory of the 9802 documentary on the 511 DVD was putting together a video for the australian release of Slow Jam, containing footage of the 2001 Liverpool gig, it was supposed to be a single in 2002.
The song selected by New Order for the Hope charity CD for the children of Iraq will be Jimmy Cliff's Vietnam song from Cliff's better-known "Wonderful world, beautiful people". Hope, a charity album released for War Child, will be available in April.

Through the whole month of March, we invite you to pay tribute to New Order's pioneer effort by posting your experience with Blue Monday, when you first listened to it, what you think of it, now and back then, and share your expericence. Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook were part of the Return To New York DJ Event that was going on on February 23rd. Seems like the event was a bit confusing and many people reported information on this event. Al Jarvis reported Bernard played Security by the Beat Club (vocals by him) and Heroes by David Bowie. Blue Monday was played by Alex James. We have exclusive pictures by Ness that can be seen online, and Rowetta, the girl from the Happy Mondays, posted a message about a link to her site for more pictures. Link to the picture gallery. Our current host, Nexpoint not to name it, feels like NewOrderOnline is taking too much server usage and has decided, even though we paid for 1 full year, to change our website settings after 8 months. Basically, our bandwidth is limited, it might end up in "error 500" or "the network is busy". If you get those errors, go back and try again, it will find a way to work. We are in the process of moving to a new host, hopefuly next week, thank you for your patience.
It seems that NewOrderWeb.com was an orphan, Reprise Records didn't renew their name and it was acquired by a Cyber-Squatting company, BuyDomains.com, which is now trying to sell it with prices from $688 to $10,000 (US Currency). We were interested to acquire this domain so that the US Fans who bought Get Ready wouldn't end up on a page not found, but it's been worst than that.

It was published on January 5th 2003, it's about how Peter Hook would see his funerals.
We are sorry to inform you that the information about the 316 DVD being released in the US was indeed false. It has been corrected by another Rhino Sales Rep. You can check the discussion on that subject.
Some people are complaining about the bad sound on the 511 DVD. It seems one of the audio track has a problem, but the Dolby Digital 5.1 track is working prefectly. We don't know about the DTS track yet.
The chart positions are now available on each release page, when available of course.
The discography is filling pretty quickly, over 100 new compilations have been added since the last few days.

THE seminal Joy Division came to an abrupt end in 1980 with the suicide of their charismatic singer and lyricist Ian Curtis. With the addition of keyboard player Gillian Gilbert, the remaining members reconvened as New Order and, to date, only the careers of Pink Floyd and the Manic Street Preachers can compare with their ability to increase their success and influence, despite the loss of such a pivotal member of the group.
According to a Rhino sales representant, the 3 16 DVD will be released in the US in mid-January 2003. The member who asked this rep made sure he wasn't talking about the 5 11 DVD, but we still don't have an official confirmation.

The pioneers of British Electronic Rock would never be so predictable as to release a standard greatest hits at christmas time. Instead, they've conjured up a brilliant 4 CD box set which is a must have for any self respecting New Order devotee. Each disc has been specially compiled by a host of special guests, and the result is a kaleidoscopic celebration of Britains finest. CD One (The Hits) is picked by the writer Miranda Sawyer, who opts for such classics as True Faith, Bizarre Love Triangle and the ground breaking Blue Monday. Journalist John McCready celebrates the New Order sounds of The Early Years with the likes of Elegia, All Day Long and Your Silent Face. The third CD features remixes by Hacienda DJ Mike Pickering, while CD four has been hand picked by the band and includes New Order live gems.
New Order are back in studio now that the promotional work for Retro is done. A source close to the band confirmed to NewOrderOnline that they are continuing to work on material for their next album at Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert's farm in Macclesfield.

The last issue (#64) of the Australian photographic magazine BLACK + WHITE contains an article on Peter Saville, New Order's sleeve designer. Featured pictures of Get Ready, Pulp's & Suede's cover, 3 pages of text, chatting about Fantin-Latour/PCL cover and others... But the best news is...there will be a book on this notorious appropriator, to be edited by Emily King called DESIGN BY SAVILLE ( Frieze ) and also there will be an exhibition in London's Design Museum, THE PETER SAVILLE SHOW, opening in May 2003.
A New Order concert will be shown on December 26th in the night (00:40 to 01:40) on Channel 4 (UK). Happy Christmas gift. We don't know which concert it will be.
Every copy of the first UK run of Retro will include the bonus CD. That means that any shop selling the album should supply the bonus disc when you purchase Retro. It follows that any advance orders (both from the UK & import orders from overseas) would also include this CD.
This is the question we are asking our members in the Digital Republic forum in the Dry 201 Message Pub. Go ahead and pick one of the 20 choices offered to you. Then, the following week, we will put up the ULTIMATE POLL -- The Battle Of The Five -- in order to decide which song is the best New Order song ever.
More information to come, but it seems that the limited edition of Retro will be available in other countries. This disc will be available only at HMV stores according to a source close to the band. The bonus disc that will be available withing the package, though it was not done to contain 5 discs, will be loaded of songs asked by the New Order fans themselves, and we should thank Jonathan Scott for his input with the band to make this item a reality, it's the requests from the fans at NewOrderOnline and other places that made this disk possible, and only Such A Good Thing was a mandatory pick from Bernard Sumner. To follow the discussion, visit our forum and this thread in particular.

Many of the upcoming New Order releases have been postponed so far, so don't rely on the release date on this site. We're doing our best to manage the upcoming events list, but due to the various releases in various countries, we have a lot of trouble to get the real release dates. So far, the box set (now titled "Retro" should have the real release date, and International was released in most countries yesterday, but we have learned today that Confusion 2002 is postponed to November 18th. We appologize for all the troubles, but this shouldn't surprise at all from New Order.

NewOrderOnline is proud to tell you that you've been had by our April Fool joke this year. No, unfortunatly, New Order will not release a live album this summer, and so far, we have no clue if Turn My Way will ever be release. This was one of the many april fools on the site today, specific ones in the forums telling Stephen Morris is leaving New Order and some others. You would have known by checking the fake sleeve here. Better luck next year!

NewOrderOnline.com will be moving in May, due to bandwidth restriction, we will be forced to find a new host for our media files. We had already to remove the mp3 files before, now we're going for all videos and audio files available on this site. Thank you for your understanding. We will remove the multimedia files on March 31st 2002, then after the move, only new files will appear unless we find some storage file for our multimedia site. To popular request, no other section of this site will change, especially our very active forums where many members share messages on daily basis. We will do our best to find some space to store the files and put them back online, don't worry, but the site is currently using 80% of a T1 line, which is too much for our host. Thank you for your understanding.

What does New Order have in common with The Beatles, Led Zeppelin & Nirvana? They are all part of the Top 50 Greatest Bands of All Time as compiled by Spin Magazine. Of course most of you would put New Order higher than this, when you read the name of bands ahead of them, and there is no sign of Joy Division on the list. If you wish to read the whole article, click on the More... below.

According to some of our readers, Bar Cuba is co-owned by Peter Hook of New Order and Mani from the Stone Roses. There is a rumour that says New Order could be the very special guests at this concert. Click on the picture or the more link to see the ad and read the text for the Hacienda Classics events.
On December 1st 2000 was officially launched a crazy project of making the ultimate New Order website. One year after, we don't have the pretention of saying "mission accomplished", but we are still very proud of the results of our hard work. A year ago NewOrderOnline only had a few visitors -- now we have more than 3000 site members, and among them, more than a thousand have Fan Club profiles to let the world know about who they are, where they're from, and about their appreciation for New Order and their music. Building such a community is, in itself, quite an achievement. You can thank you for it, because each of you have been contributing one way or another.

60 Miles An Hour entered the UK chart at #29 this week after its first week. New Order hit #29 before in their early years with Temptation, but the only other singles that entered the chart so low are Ceremony (#34), Procession (#38), The Pefect Kiss (#46), State of the Nation (#30), Bizarre Love Triangle (#56). So this means 60 Miles An Hour is their least successful chart entry since 1986, and their 6th worst.
60 Miles An Hour was released on November 19th 2001 in the UK. It's available in 3 different items. 60 Miles An Hour (Part 1) 01. 60 Miles An Hour (Radio Edit) 02. Sabotage 03. Someone Like You (Funk D'Void Remix) 60 Miles An Hour (Part 2) 01. 60 Miles An Hour (Supermen Lovers Remix) 02. Someone Like You (James Holden Dub) 03. Someone Like You (Future Shock Vocal Remix) 60 Miles An Hour (DVD Single) 01. 60 Miles An Hour (Radio Edit) 02. Sabotage 03. 60 Miles An Hour Video
An in-house advanced promo CD of New Order's Someone Like You has been printed by Reprise Records' offices in Los Angeles, California, and has been circulating lately. It is thus quite possible that Someone Like You (also often referred to as SLY, even if it brings a sad Stallone connection) has been chosen by Reprise Records to be released as Get Ready's second single in the United States, while, as we know, the track 60 Miles an Hour has been chosen as the second single in Europe by London Records/Warner Music.

Last night was New Order's second stop in Cologne in 3 months. The last time was disastrous. Last night was a success. Setlist: Crystal / Transmission / Regret / Ceremony / 60 Miles an Hour / Your Silent Face / Atmosphere / Close Range / Touched by The Hand of God / Bizarre Love Triangle / True Faith / Temptation / Love Will Tear Us Apart Encore: Rock The Shack / Blue Monday / Ruined in a Day
While waiting to see what will be the next single in the US, a new promotional CD has been released in the US for New Order. It's called EXTRA ORDER and it features the following songs: Crystal (Lee Coombs Remix) 8:44 Someone Like You (Future Shock Vocal Remix) 8:07 True Faith (Philip Steir's Re-Order Mix) 8:14 We have seen many copies available in EBay for instance, we have no idea yet if this is scheduled for commercial release. More information about this soon.
New Order played in Berlin tonight. Here is a report from one of our readers (Ulrich Roessler): "The Evening started with Arthur Baker doing an about 90 min long DJ set including "Confusion" (I think it was the "Pump Panel Reconstruction Mix") and the Bassdrum Intro from "Blue Monday". After Arthur's set two comedians (an "announcer" and his "translator") came on stage to introduce the band ("They are not the Beatles. They are not the Rolling Stones. They are even not New Order. They are ... The Joy Division"). First thing Bernard did on stage was to assure the audience that "of course we are New Order". There were no surprises in New Order's setlist: Crystal /Transmission / Regret / Ceremony / 60 Miles An Hour /Your Silent Face / Atmosphere / Close Range / Touched by the Hand of God / Bizarre Love Triangle / True Faith / Temptation / Love Will Tear Us Apart / Rock The Shack (Encore) / Blue Monday (Encore)"

According to John Peel, famous for his Peel Sessions, New Order would have been recording a session last night for BBC Radio 1. It is quite possible that this session would be part of a new "Peel Session" album that would be the following of two previous Peel Sessions EPs by New Order, and two by Joy Division.

Benefitting from New Order's presence at the Paris Olympia on November 11th and 12th, Warner Music France is trying to organize, somewhere in Paris, an exhibition of all Peter Saville's creations for New Order: albums, eps, posters, etc... They will recover from Peter Saville's studio certain parts, but it seems that a good share of them were lost. They would like to know if some fans would be ready to lend some of their parts the time of the expostion. Their name would be quoted for each object. The exhibition will be from Friday November 9th to November 17th 2001, we don't know yet where this will be in Paris. If you have any, please contact Romain Tassinari at romain.tassinari@warnermusic.com from Warner Music France.

We received a mail from David Potts and it goes the following way: NewOrderOnLiners, Very nice site you've got there. Just to let you know that the Glasgow show was top!! both us (RAM), New Order and Mr Baker (he played a fuckin' blindin' version of Good Vibrations). It was a great day out. Must admit it felt a bit strange being on the same stage as Hooky at different times. Thanks to a really warm crowd reaction in Glasgow, and thanks to Hooky for the dedication mid set, wasn't expecting that one. We'll be gigging our arses off,so, hope to be over there in the not to distant future. We play Night & Day in Manchester Nov 10th and a few unconfirmed London shows. Cheers RAM ON! Pottsy

New Order were in Paris today, they were at the FNAC Montparnasse to sign some autographs for their french fans. We have 2 reports from our french members, we expect more reviews and pictures soon of their experience. What they have learned is that neither Billy Corgan or Bobby Gillespie will tour with them, they will play Joy Division songs but they want to keep them as a surprise, the Recycle project and the Bains-Douches CD is on hold, but not cancelled, and that the 24 Hours Party People movie is almost done and will be a comedy.

NewOrderOnline.com will be keeping silence in the next days in respect for the thousands of people who died tragically yesterday in New York City, Washington D.C. and Somerset County. We feel that it wouldn't be appropriate to focus on New Order and act as if nothing happened. We have to highlight this, somehow. Therefore we are inviting all our visitors to share their thoughts in the Digital Republic message board, one of the Dry 201 Forums. New Order discussed the price of love. It's now time to discuss the price of peace.
NewOrderOnline's management offer their best wishes to all the members of this site in New York City and Washington DC, we do hope your families and you are ok, and we hope everything will be alright in the future. We put our hands on the video that is played on the giant scren in the video of Crystal, and we are offering it to you exclusively on this site.
